I have created this island from hand though, basing Melfi's history around it entirely.

The thing with our map is that it's very structured. In other maps you can cut out your desired plot. Here we already have designed plots from which to pick.
It's a bit odd at first, but I like to think it avoids having people claiming territorial superiority or making outlandish plots. All have their advantages and disadvantages.

I did and still do find it a little odd but I won't argue against. It's very structured and you have good reason.
Any suggested course of action?
