The most humane way to execute someone would be to slowly drop the amount of oxygen reaching their lungs until it reaches zero. As long as the oxygen is replaced by nitrogen or some other inert gas that the body will not negatively react with (such as carbon dioxide), the person would basically just experience a loss of consciousness and never wake up.
I can't believe I just typed that.
