Media under...Culture? - maluhia - 08-25-2022

We all know that Ministry of Media was previously abolished in an Assembly vote. However, that shouldn't be the dead end of regional media.

Maybe "media" itself doesn't deserve its own ministry, however, outlets like the Southern Journal and the South Pacific Independent News Network shouldn't just go to waste. And now, Badger Street, home of all South Pacifican media and news, has now becoming an endless pit of The Orange Records, by A bee.

So what if regional media falls under the Ministry of Culture?

All thoughts, feedback, and comments are welcomed, if not encouraged.
Quote:
The Charter of The South Pacific
Article Six, Sections 8 and 9

Minister of Culture
(8) The Minister of Culture, with the collaboration of the Ministry Staff, will be responsible for supporting the roleplay community and organizing regional cultural activities, events, and exchanges.
(9) The Minister of Culture, again, with collaboration of the Ministry Staff, will also hold responsibility the Southern Journal and other regional-owned media outlets and news agencies.
(10) All independent, non-regional owned media outlets are subject to regulations by the Ministry and Minister of Culture, and those regulations are simply failing to abide by the Community Standards or other official regional law, and, importantly, the media outlets are not controlled by the Ministry or Minister.

Yeah, this is a huge no from me. We got rid of the Ministry of Media for a reason.

You also don’t need the Charter to grant you exclusive rights to publish something called “The Southern Journal.” If you wanna engage the ministry in that folly again, there’s nothing stopping you. Maybe try proving yourself at writing media before asking for that kind of thing.

What regulations would they be under, and wouldn't that count as a form of control?

That's a huge red flag for me. The government has no business regulating private media.

The Ministry will not tell outlets what they can or cannot say, it will actually be just some simple, loose rules that would be our Community Standards or regional law.

Community Standards are always in effect and if there's specific regulations we want to have on private media, I (a) am not sure what they are and (b) think they should be written into the law rather than left up to the discretion of the Ministry of Culture.

I'm also opposed to legislating this back into existence. If the government ever gets into the Media business again, it should be as an executive project because an enterprising Prime Minister believes it's important to their broader agenda for the region. Not because we brute force it into existence for the pure sake of having it. We did that already and it was just dead weight on an already over bureaucratized Cabinet which lacks leadership or direction.

If that is meant as an insult, you're free to start your own self-ran independent "press".

Against this because it requires a lot of staff to upkeep an "official" newspaper. Against this because it allows censorship of independent media => which disincentivizes press.
If your goal is to have an "official" regional newspaper, you can start a private one with staff members and garnish enough popularity for it to "de facto" become "regional newspaper". If your goal is more media engagement - that is not going to happen in TSP.

Firstly, not an insult. I actually like reading your Orange Records, however, you are in the only one who posts in the Badger Street sub forum. Secondly, I understand, with past comments, that I should go more in-depth into the proposed changes, and I will be doing so ASAP

While we’re at it, we can merge the Ministry of Engagement with this expanded Ministry of Culture into one big super ministry. We can name it the Ministry of Regional Affairs! Wink
