RE: The Bruuman Monitor - VPRB - 12-09-2017

-BREAKING NEWS - Bruuma has invaded Sereva

A few hours before dawn, Bruuma has launched a full-scale invasion of Sereva.
The attack began with bombing raids on Erinor military positions and was followed by airbourne assault on strategic positions. Other airbourne troops have landed in the interior, probably joining the local rebels and the Bruuman troops already present.

As the sun set, the Bruuman fleet reached the Western shores of Sereva supported by aircrafts and helicopters and the expeditionary forced landed. The Bruuman Army has managed to take control of much of the Western coast and its pushing toward the interior, by now managing to gain a few kilometers in depth.

News are still confused and fragmented, but it it estimated that the Bruuman troops amount to thousands and they include artillery helicopters and armored divisions. More and more soldiers are being ferried by air and sea as we write.

In a brief statement trasmitted by the BCNA, the regime said that: "Due to the threat of the Ryccian imperialist aggression on the freedom fighters of Sereva, we have launched a security operation before the arrival of the enemy expedition. We warn the Ryccian fleet to turn back and go home, or face a grim fate on Sereva".

Sea and sky: Frost squadron sinks Bruuman corvette, then get shot down

The Imperial Frost Air Force got a bittersweet victory as a squadron manage to sink one of the four known corvettes of the Bruuman Navy, only to be shot down on its way back in a pincher manouvre of Bruuman Migs and submarines.
According to military analysts, the Frost Air Force correctly estimated that the superior speed of their planes could punch a hole in the Bruuman defenses, but underestimated the numbers of Bruuman fighters present in the area and the anti-air capabilities of submarines.

Central front: bitter close quarter warfare carry on with little effect

Fighting carry on in the center of Sereva, where Bruuman troops and their Erinoran counterparts have become bogged down in a trench and close quarter warfare that have led to almost no change in territorial control so far.
Fighting is reported as brutal as both sides plays a game of daily attacks and counterattacks. Territorial gains are usually lost in days or hours to counterattacks. In villages along the frontline there are even reports of hand-to-hand fighting, a claim believed to be reliable since every Bruuman soldier is usually equipped with a machete.

Ramica: Bafuto Serevai and allies go undeground, start terrorist attacks against infrastructures and government troops.

As Erinoran and Ryccian troops have regained control of virtually the whole capital, Bafuto Serevai insurgents and their Bruuman and Puerto Polloan allies are going underground, hoping to mix with the civilians and carry on terrorists attack against the loyalist troops and the main infrastructures of the city.
According to reports, Erinorans and their allies are being targeted with car bombs and snipers, while sabotages have been carried on against bridges, electric lines and other infrastructure. At least one assault succeded in blowing up an electrical substation, while a Bruuman sortie against a cell tower ended in a hours-long standoff that left all the assailants and some guards dead.
Tension run high as the Erinorans have to balance security measures and respect for civilians' rights.

Summary of the events of the past week

Sea and sky: GI for the block, Bruuma for the shock

The Gianlucian Navy has declared a blockade in the western waters of Sereva, which has led to skirmishes with Bruuman convoys pushing through, casuing casualties on both sides. Sea minfields and, in coastal areas, torpedo boats and land-based missiles add to the dangers. The slowing of the maritime corridor is forcing Bruuma to rely more on plane transport.

Bruuma has retaliated with new submarine raids against civilian vessels in the sea west of GI-Land.

North: coalition landings force Bruuman retreat

Ryccian forces attempted landings in four locations of the Bruuman-controlled coast. The central assault were repelled in fierce battles, the southern assault was successful but the forces were unable to push out of the landing area as they are surrounded by enemy forces.  The northern assault was costly but successful and mirrored by a similar landing of Frost troops. The two armies were later joined by Gianlucian forces and sent Bruuman troops on the retreat before regrouping along a new frontline.

South: Bruuman offensive pushes Erinoran front back

Bruuman forces launched a successful offensive against the Erinoran forces on the Southern front, conquering a swat of land until the offensive eventually halted.

Missiles strike Bruuman base, prompt retaliation
[Image: 5178707.cms_-640x428.jpg]
Fire rages after a missile blew up an ammo depot in one of the main Bruuman bases

According to sources close to the Bruuman military, one of the BPDF main bases on Sereva has been hit by at least two cruise missile yesterday night. One hit an ammunition depot, causing an explosion and several fires that forced a partial evacuation of the base until they were put out several hours later.
The other missile landed near one of the staff facilities, probably its intended target, but still caused several dead and wounded, among whom there are supposed to be a brigadier and major general.
The total death toll is estimated around thirty people, with approximately as much wounded.
The strike reportedly came from Gianlucian forces: if true, the ballistic missiles attack on the GI-Land forces base is then a retliation.

Serevan War: Bulletin

Summary of the events of the past week

In the north, the continued coalition offensive pushed back the Bruumans. The offensive broke through the lines in the central section, while its advance has been hampered on the flanks by the presence of the Bruuman northern base on the western section and by the intervention of the elite Red Jujus on the eastern section.

On the central and southern frontline Bruumans have been on the advance, mostly relying on a combination of mobile rocket launchers, truck-mounted infantry and assault helicopters. Two main offensive have been launched, aimed at reaching Ramica in the centre and cutting off an Erinoran stronghold in the south.

The war on the sea and in the sky continues to cause losses on both side, with the new coalition blockade in the north likely to spur a response by the communists.

RE: The Bruuman Monitor - VPRB - 01-26-2018

Serevan War: Bulletin

Summary of the events of the past week

Northern front
Bruuma launched an offensive spearheaded by tanks and airplanes aimed at reconnecting with the Northern base, which clashed with the Ryccian and Frost offensives aimed at cutting the base off. The diverging of Frost paratroopers allowed the coalition to encircle the communist offensive and neutralize it in a fierce and intense battle. Material losses for Bruumans were significative. The battle however gave Bruumans the time to reinforce a coastal corridor with the base and keep it open.

Central front
Bruumans broke the Erinoran lines with a combination of infantry and helicopter-born Special Forces. As the regular infantry assaulted the frontline, the elite troops were able to land behind it, disrupting the arrival of reinforcement and securing strategic objectives. Thus, Bruumans were able to advance until the outskirt of Ramica, where they stopped and started stabilizing their positions due to the threats posed by nearby coalition bases and entrenched troops in the city.

Central-southern front
A combined Erinoran and Ryccian offensive repelled a Bruuman counteroffensive, based on mechanized infantry and rocket artillery. The superior firepower of coalition planes and tanks sent the communist routing back rear positions, allowing the coalition to recapture a swath of territory.

Bruuman APCs destroyed during the retreat from the coalition assault

West - Southern coast
Bruuma subjected the Ryccian landing to a massive artillery barrage, followed by assaults on infantry waves. For the first time in the war, the communists used chemical weapons, extensively using nerve gas against the Ryccian positions. Despite high human losses, the Bruuman in the end managed to annihilate the Ryccian force, whose few survivors fled by boats.

Peace deal with Erinor appears confirmed as ceasefire hold and Bruuman troops retreats from the frontlines
Now new reports give further strenght to the hypotesis as Bruuman troops have begun retreating from all the frontlines, leaving Erinoran troops to fill in. Convoys of men and vehicles have been seen moving toward the coast, moving gradually to ensure the vacant positions are filled by Erinor alone and cautiously to avoid attacks from the rest of the coalition.

The rumors about the secret peace deal between Bruuma and Erinor appeared to be true as a ceasefire took place yesterday along all the frontline where the troops of the two nations were confronting each other. Prisoners and bodies exchange are also taking place in this process.

Bafuto Serevai militants have been spotted retreating along the Bruuman troops.

Bruuma and the Serevan War, a first analysis: part I, warfare

[Image: 07507d317-45b2-43bb-a36c-ee2082ab6480-r-...=640%2C343]

The Bruuman regime celebrated in the past its involvement in Sereva as a victory: the official propaganda tells the ordinary citizens that Bruuma had to invade the island to safeguard the local communist militants, that the peace deal with Erinor was struck to spare the local population from further sufferings and that the terms amounted to a political victory. While the preposterous views of the events is expected from the totalitarian propaganda machine, it does raise a question: how did Bruuma fare in the Serevan War?

A military band during the "victory" celebrations in Bayougrad.

The answer is complex and must take into account both the purposes and the means of the Bruuman regime. Our experts have prepared a comprehensive analysis covering the main topics, based on the data available up to now. We begin today with the military field.

The Ground Forces gave a good proof of themselves, with veteran troops and Special Forces demonstrating discipline and adequate training, aided also by the terrain much similar to the one to their island. Conscripts instead proved effectively mostly as numbers, as the ruthless human wave attacks that took place on different fronts demonstrated. Bafuto Serevai, both due to the lack of time for training and the paranoia of the regime, have been used more effectively as a police and patrol force in conquered area than in guerrilla operations in enemy territory, which proved successful only in the short term.

The highly trained and partially modernized Air Force played a key role, especially in making up for the inferiority of the Bruuman Navy. The inadequacy of its fleet is going to be the issue Bruuma will need to address in the future if it wants to retain any power projections outside its home

It is estimated that about 100,000 -120,000 troops served in Sereva, with a peak of 80,000 present at the end of the war. Losses have been important: the regime did not give any figures yet – and they would be unreliable anyway – but most estimates poses them at 3,500 dead and 8,800 wounded, including a few hundred pertaining to the auxiliary forces. Prisoners have been instead extremely low, less than 500, with many captured at sea or shot down from air: indoctrination made many soldiers fight to death or commit suicide to avoid capture. The Air Force and the mechanized divisions have felt the loss of experienced troops more, while regular infantry less so since many of the casualties were fresh recruits.

A Bruuman soldier  The Ground Forces proved itself with veterans and Special Forces, but also used conscripts as cannon fodder.

Material losses have also been significant: the Ground Forces lost close to a thousand of military and utility vehicles, with an especially dire loss of tanks, almost two hundred, mostly in the North. Assorted artillery losses are also probably at four digits, including mortars. The Air Force lost a couple dozen planes and more than thirty helicopters, while the Navy suffered the loss of dozens of small and cargo boats, five or more submarines and one of its corvette.

A destroyed Bruuman tank in Northern Sereva. The big, conventional armored offensives proved disastrous, suffering dire casualties against the more advanced enemy counterparts and antitank weapons.

On a strategic level, the generals proved themselves rational, if a little predictable, despite suffering from the obsolescence of the military intelligence apparatus, which at times did not allowed a view of the situation as fast or detailed as needed. The only real core and controversial decision has been the one not to keep pushing the initial advance to Ramica, even at a high cost. Some points out that, by capturing the capital, Bruuma could have turned the war in its favor a force Erinor to a much more onerous deal. Others underline that with the imminent Ryccian landings it was a too great risk to overstretch their lines and also pointed out that the hilly terrain of central Sereva slowed down the mechanized advance.

[Image: 082c646766571f634961de74e76bf0e1986e3352.jpg]
The Bruuman Ground Forces used for the first technicals on the battlefield, a sign that it is adapting to a more contemporary warfare.

The performance of the BPDF and its auxiliary forces has been valid overall, considering it was fighting not only the Erinoran army but also the expeditionary forces of some of the most advanced and powerful nations in the South Pacific. The Bruuman war apparatus however did show its limit and appeared as still transitioning from its past-century, conventional asset to a new one aligned with contemporary warfare. This has been evident for example in the successes of mixed and mobile forces of helicopters, rocket artillery trucks and infantry compared to the costly and ineffective open field armored offensives.

Bruuma and the Serevan War, a first analysis: part II, politics

A senior member of the Workers' Mojo Party addresses the crowd at a gathering in Bayougrad.

The decision of the regime to get involved in the Serevan disturbances and actually help escalate it to a civil war is difficult to read in. It is possible that they believed they could use the presence of their troops (or their pulling back) as a bargain chip with Erinor or the international community. If that was the case, they underestimated the reactions abroad, in particular the Ryccian one, which in turned made the events precipitate.

After failing to capture the whole island, it is doubtful that the regime really believed they could win the war on the battlefield, even if they did not probably expected the military mobilizations from Frost and GI-Land too. Bruuma probably conducted the rest of the war trying to gain as much leverage possible before being forced to propose a deal. The push to Ramica, in the final phase of the war, makes more sense if one thinks of it as a mean to held the city “hostage” to pressure Erinor in accepting to negotiate.

Regarding its objectives of foreign policy, apparently Bruuma did not achieve anyone. It did not obtain any concession on its nuclear program, which instead will probably be even more opposed. Sereva did not gain independence as socialist country and the Bafuto Serevai have no real perspective of achieving any electoral victory now that they are a political party. The war deteriorated the relationship with many countries, including the neighboring GI-Land and Erinor itself, with whom Bruuma had enjoyed a mildly warm relationship until that point.

However, a closer look reveals that the country did achieve some gains. It neutralized the possibility of an hostile power establishing a presence on Sereva – although not in Erinor. It ensured the survival of the Bafuto Serevai and their presence as a closely-aligned party in the Erinoran political landscape. Most countries have accepted to resume diplomatic and trade relations. The role of Bruuman as a regional power has become more defined.

There is also another vital aspect to consider: that of internal politics. For the primary objective of the Bruuman regime, which is its own perpetuation, the war has been a boon: it has provided a formidable instrument to rally consensus and strengthen its grip on the population for the present and the future. Lowering the population standard of living, losing almost ten thousand men on foreign soil seems unbearable only if looked through the eyes of a democracy: for a totalitarian regime they are a readily payable price for a universal justification for anything. The war has given the population foreign enemies toward whom direct the anger, a menace that further justify the perpetuation of the regime and a new purpose for sacrifices and hardships.

Also, some point out that the war has been a giant playground to test the BPDF effectiveness of today so to know how to update it against future threats.  A cynical view that however wouldn’t be surprising at all for the regime.

That is not to say that the war did not had any cost for the Bruuman leadership. The economy suffered enough from sanctions and trade disruption to make another similar venture unfeasible, which is true also for the material losses in which the BPDF incurred.

The survival of a totalitarian dictatorship depends on its ability to adapt to external and internal changings that it cannot prevent. The Serevan War has been Bruuma’s lastest shot at it: only time will tell how much successful.
