Language Discussion - Qwert - 08-24-2015

The matter of languages in TSP RP tends to surface from time to time. I hope we can establish, among other things,
  • the origin and spread of our lingua franca, English,
  • what other languages are important for naming and other cultural phenomena. Their significance and origins should also be established,
  • common names and designations based on the previous two points,
  • and other important points not covered above here. (Let me know Smile)
Some resources: So, any suggestions?

I don't know about other nations, but for some time now I've been using Austral to refer to English, Tolsian to refer to Italian and Awesomiasan to refer to Chinese.

RE: Language Discussion - Farengeto - 08-24-2015

I'll see if I can find the unposted idea, but I had a proposal with TSSS regarding an ancient empire located around the modern Arebel Sea area that spoke a language which would become French (or as a possible Latin origin which would split into modern romance languages), a significant language

My problem with this is the complex factors that lead to languages being spread like they are. Even if we ignore the origin of languages and pretend that they never fragment into other languages we still need a reason a single language would dominant across two unconnected continents.

For the western continents and some nearby regions my best suggestion would be some Empire that went full Rome and conquered the whole continent, but it has its issues and would require some serious history streamlining.

Hmm... hmm....

Maybe English could had originated in Kringalia? To my knowledge, there is no such language named Kringalian. Kringalia has English(or Austral) as its official language. Although there is an Italian(Tolsian) minority, the ethnic Kringalians really do not have a native tounge(or am I mistaken?).

And maybe Esperanto can be a Sporaltryan language, since Esperanto is an official language of Sporaltryus.

I hope to create a "Kringalian" language at some point in the future, but I don't know when that'll be. :/

I have also an idea for creating an Astrofolk language that is not found in RL and originated from somewhere, along with "English" and that Empire language.

I would support the idea of an ancient TSP-Roman empire. Parts of the Sedunnic history I've so far written mention explorers/traders from the western continents (only a fairly advanced civilization would travel such a distance). It also mentions that those powers diminish. From my RP perspective this would be great!

One problem, though, is how English managed to stay homogeneous and not develop into separate languages (like Latin). This would imply that any empire would have to survive to at least a couple of hundred years or so ago.

I think we need to limit the amount of RL languages to avoid having to invent a history for every language.

I would of course love to let the Sedunnic language influence naming and regional culture Wink

Let's see if we manage to agree on the moons' names. There's also at least two similar projects: the composition of the TSP system and geographical naming. TSP RP world is available in Sedunic though!

The problem with my nation is I have a language spoken by natives before 'white' colonisers came, but when the map gets updated I'll be part of the Western Continent. Its wht I wanted an island but all the islands were too small for my liking

RE: Language Discussion - Ryccia - 08-24-2015

Maybe I could had colonized/tried to colonize you! Smile

Just a thought, if you needed any colonizing history or something.
