Stoinian Peerages
Stoinian society is somewhat aristocratic in nature. Especially symbolic power is in the hands of those who have proven themselves to society. While the King gained his title though his efforts in the War at Home, peerage titles were created as a way to thank shareholders of the colonization effort. From these shareholders the Great Noble Houses were created, each with certain exclusivities in their own right since their funding was paramount in the creation of the colony.
Aside from title and prestige, members of the noble houses are exempt to some taxes. The heads of a peerage also serve as representatives for their planets alongside Senators in the Planetary Assembly. There they serve their planet for as long as they wish and are very difficult to be voted our their hereditary position.

Nowadays these peerages serve as a reflection of Stoinian Government on each planet. Whereas the King is the head of state of the star nation, peerages are the head of state of planetary governments. In both systems power lays in the hands of the democratic institutions, although the King has considerable power by the constitution. Peerages were mostly in charge of military affairs on a planet and served a more symbolic role as viceroys and representatives of the ruling noble house of Stoian. Although this power was stripped in the MacArthur Reformations as the military became a strictly independent institution, it isn't uncommon to still see members of noble houses serve in the military. However most members of the noble houses willingly join the military and make a career there before attaining the highest peerages with respective responsibilities. Most noble families are active pillars of their respective planetary communities and are deeply respected by Stoinians.

In modern Stoinia peerages can be attained by extraordinary people and granted by the King himself. Most of the times this is granted to military personnel who have proven themselves through their actions. Thus a King appoints them a peerage and then receive their peerage duties when a new planet is colonized or previous noble houses go extinct. However the Great Noble Houses also have this power. The Great Noble Houses serve as a way to help the King manage peerages. These houses may appoint members of their own house, if there aren't any new peerages granted by the King, to newly colonized planets.
The most notable instance where this happened is the Tozorian Corridor where all planets in this corridor are members of House Thorne. However these peerages can be overruled by the King after incompetence by these house members.

Like the King, the Great Noble Houses are forbidden to marry with each other. However members can still marry members of lesser noble houses, but the King must grant them this favour. Although this rarely happens, it is generally frowned upon by the general public.

Peerages are also hereditary. Many peerages are given after careful consideration of the whole family of the person considered for a peerage. However a person can only hold one peerage at a time and can renounce them at any time. Renouncing a peerage grants it to the next in line and the person loses all rights and status associated with that peerage. This is to prevent intermingling of noble houses creating multiple peerages for one person.
Stoinia itself is a Grand Duchy as well and is granted to the second child of the monarch or other members of the family.

With each peerage the title of Lord or Dame is granted as well as his/her Excellency. For example: Dame Chin Yang, Grand Duchess of Qingdao.

After the Cheunh Compromise certain Cheunh ranks have been integrated into the Stoinian Peerage system. This way the traditional ranks of Aristocra and Syndic have made their way into Stoinian society although it is solely used by the Cheunh Ascendancy.

Peerages:
Grand Duke/Duchess or Aristocra: Appointed to members of the Great Noble Houses that rule over sector capitals and can appoint own members on other planets within their designated sector. They help the King manage the peerage system on a sector wide scale. This peerage can only be granted by the King.
Duke/Duchess or Syndic: Granted peerages by the King for extraordinary deeds. This peerage usually holds over more important planets within a sector that aren't the sector capital.
Count/Countess: A promotion of the Baron/Baroness peerage given by the King or Great Noble House for Barons and Baronesses that have helped their local planet greatly.
Baron/Baroness: Peerages given by the King or Great Noble Houses over rural planets either given to important members of Stoinian society or members of the Great Noble Houses
