Public Advocate
#1

A lot of us here in The Pavilion are talking about what to essentially, "delete" from the government, but I have an idea for an addition.

In New York City, the government has many citywide positions including the mayor, comptroller, speaker of the council, and the public advocate. As you can probably tell, I'm going to be focusing on the public advocate (PA) in this post and thread.

The main job of a PA is to communicate with the people to the government. To tell the government, its employer, what the people want. It also serves as a watchdog for the people. The PA in New York City is Jumaane Williams, who is elected by the people.

Sometimes I feel like the government is so out-of-reach with the people, especially on the NationStates website itself. Usually those with power spend their days here on TSP Forums and on our discord server. I feel as if this job would help give the government a sense of what the people want, so the government can do its job: work for the people.

What are your thoughts?

Every government official is a ping away on Discord, a TG away on NS, or a forum thread away on the forums. They’re all active and they’re just regular people like anybody else. The idea that anybody is “out of reach” seems more like an abstract complaint than a real thing.

I'll also add that even though I'm not elected by the gameside, I respond to RMB pings as a courtesy when they relate to my government functions. And like 90% of past Cabinet members do the same.

Elections are how the public gets their voice. We don't need another elected official to give the public their voice

I believe elections are enough for the government to hear the peoples’ opinions.

Well, I disagree. Yes, elections show the people’s opinions, but, some things can happen while it is a middle of a term and there is no election to “show the government what the people wants.” You’d have to wait until the next election cycle (which could be far away in time.)

1. Okay, and I respect that, though which do you spend the most time on: NS, tsp discord, or tsp forums?

2. What I said to the United States of Vietnam could potentially answer this statement.

I asked you in a different thread to inform yourself of the rules that govern the proceedings of the Great Council. Since you have clear not done so, please consider that your involvement here is a courtesy but, given how you did not register for participation within the allotted time, you will not be allowed to formally submit proposals, motion them for a vote, or cast a vote. If you have further questions please refer first, as I originally suggested, to the relevant organising resolution.

I do not participate in the regional server, but I am happy to talk through instant messaging or on the forum.

I did happen to review The Great Council rules, though did not come over, somehow, the participation registration thread I did not see. Though, now looking at it, seeing that I was inactive on NS for personal reasons during the registration period, I will no longer post on The Great Council thread and this thread will be deleted by the end of the day, eastern standard time.

Adding a Public Advocate to our region seems very unnecessary. Becuase elections are pretty enough to listen people's opinion, IMO.

On the topic of adding a ‘public advocate’
I think, in all honesty, this is a terrible idea, but first let’s get the definition of what a public advocate is.
A public advocate, from what I was able to gather, is:
“an official elected or appointed to advance the interests of the public, especially by investigating complaints concerning public authorities.”
So it’s essential it’s a moderator for moderators & other authorities, Frankly, I think this would bring more harm then good. While having someone to keep the other forms of TSP Government could be beneficial, this also comes with a high level of corruption.
If the ‘investigations’ are fueled by the public interest, then what’s to stop a corrupt public advocate teaming up with a group of spammers to get rid of some of the authority & spamming the sever.
Furthermore depending on the public advocate’s point of view, a certain member of the TSP Government may not be seen doing there job right in the eyes of the public advocate.
Overall it’s a bad solution to a overall problem, how to deal with TSP Government corruption.

If you mean in the case of RMB, I've taken the liberty to already do this myself by linking GC discussions relevant to the RMB (Delegate and LC) as well as the title and a ping of who has started the thread. With great success, might I add - Orcuo and Avacquer have been pipelined to use the forums.
It need not be codified.
