Rules Change: Remove inactive participants
#21

I have been thinking about how to put this nicely, but I haven't figured any way out, so I'm just going to be blunt.

I have a bunch of things going on in my life right now, and I just can't give NS my attention every day. But I still try to come at least once a week to try and catch up on things, as you can see now. I'm trying to contribute to this region I spend so much time in, but with this proposal, if I didn't spend hours every day refreshing the page and contributing to every damn discussion thread about some proposal abolishing something I would have to be removed because just fuck me. Unfortunately I just can't spend all my time on NS nowadays, and I try to contribute where I can. But now I'm being pushed out from the GC that helps this region that I care so much about by people who think spending 5 hours a day on GP is the norm. But I can't do that. I just can't. I deserve some leeway as long as I can contribute just a tiny droplet. Yes, if you haven't done anything the entire GC you might be kicked out, but if you're like me and have things to do to the point where I just can't get on NS or the forums all the time then you deserve to remain in the GC.

And honestly, I just don't see the merits in adding a voting requirement to the GC's membership. If I have something going on and I can't get on the GC for like a week and any LoA I put in doesn't apply, then I'll get kicked out and that's just not cool. I deserve to contribute once I've come back.

Sorry if you've been offended or something by what I've said, but I've had a really shitty week and just haven't had time to get on NS and if I'm going to be punished for that then I'll find some backwater provision in the law that lets me make a criminal case on it.

This is going to sound harsh, but… No, you don’t “deserve” to. You either can actively participate or you can’t. If you can’t, for whatever reason, then that’s all there is to it. Be here or don’t be here. If your life is too busy for NS, that’s perfectly fine and normal. This is a game. But our rules don’t need to bend over backwards and cater to people who can’t play the game.

You’re plenty active on Discord, by the way.

After playing NS for almost 15 years, and TSP specifically for the last decade, I know that people love to vote on things, but don’t care to do the work to participate beyond that. We need to do better. It’s that kind of stuff that led to us calling the GC in the first place. A quarter of “participants” didn’t even do the bare minimum of voting. They’re not participating, so they’re giving up their seat at the game table.

I would rather have a life and spend time with people who make me enjoy my time on this horrible game than spend hours wasting away debating with people who will never change their mind. I believe many share the same sentiment. I've learned not to take time for granted this past week. I'm not going to spend it here.

Okay everyone, let's not force NS over IRL stuff. Hands down, IRL stuff is more important.

Yes, RL > NS.

But being removed from the GC isn't a moral failing or a declaration of someone's badness or lack of value as a player or South Pacifican. It's a reflection solely on their tendency to participate in the GC.

If you're not available to play NS, can you really be upset you're being excluded from playing NS a certain way?

I'm not as adamant as Glen that there can't be LOAs, but I'd vote for his proposal as written. I'd even more vote for a debate requirement! (I'm not hugely persuaded by Glen's argument that it would take too much Chair time, as the Chair already reads the entire GC forum contents I'm fairly sure. Of course, Chair and Deputy Chair insights as to their workload would be welcome here.) Just participate in the process...

I reserve the right to say "I told you so" when this inevitably backfires horribly.

This reminds me of the time when a legislator held up the GC because they thought the timing of it wasn't convenient enough for them.

I should note that this resolution also contributes nothing. We accomplish nothing by purging the rolls of the GC except for inconveniencing certain participants.

Then go do that! Why are you here arguing against this, then, when you feel this is all horrible and a waste of your time?

...but they're not? You're the one who is suggesting going out of our way to specifically exclude those who couldn't vote on certain resolutions. The rules right now do nothing, and you have yet to say anything to prove that it is damaging anything. And it's not that people just do or don't have enough time for NS, that's just a false distinction there - the vast majority of people are somewhere in the middle, where they do have enough time for NS but they're not going to check it every day - maybe every couple of days at most. Which leads to votes being missed. And, even if they can check it more frequently, they just might not on several days for whatever reason, and that reason can just be forgetting or not having access to the internet which precludes LoAs (or it can also just be differing workloads on different weeks - again, this entire argument relies on a completely false dichotomy)

I'm fine with this for the Assembly because it has a higher bar for removal (several votes missed a month rather than one) and you can rejoin the assembly fairly easily if you ever lapse (or the Chair can give you an exception in case of otherwise proven activity). But both of those things are not present for the Great Council. So what is the reasoning behind this? The only thing you've said so far is appeal to a vague sense of "deserving to be in the Great Council" which apparently means that you must check NS at least every 3 days and never miss any votes and always manage to check the forum. What part of the Great Council requires that every single member must be that active for the entire period? The Great Council already has been convened for two months - expecting perfection over that long of a time period is unnecessarily harsh for something this inconsequential, even outside a browser game like this.

Perhaps because he is (very reasonably) incredibly annoyed by your insistence on actively antagonizing anyone who is unhappy any aspect of the Great Council, and especially those who believe (if this law is passed) they might not check the GC for a couple of days and come back to find they've been permanently excluded from voting.
