Secret Ballots
#11

Is it possible to make it so that the poll simply displays the number of votes to date, until it closes? No info on the number of votes for each candidate, or who has voted for who until the end? I like this way, stops people sheep voting the person that has the most votes (as nobody knows who that is), it is still transparent and people can't be asked to change their vote if a candidate knows they are just behind. Makes it more like a real election too. Probably not possible though.

I'll let Glen answer that, since he's more knowledgeable of the forum software than I am. However, I do need to ask if there is worth the trouble. If people don't want their vote to be public then they have the Vote Collector account. I don't understand what is the problem with it, since we never make public who sends their votes there, or even if people have ever sent their votes to it. The only people who know if there have been any private votes at all are whoever admin is serving as Election Commissioner and the people who have submitted private votes.

No, there is no way to do that.

Every single election, many people complain about our voting methods and seek to make it much more complicated to avoid things like lobbying, or lemming effects, or whatever. Every single election. Then the election actually happens, people grumble or celebrate, and we all settle back down because these methods worked just fine.

Obviously, if any citizen feels they are being intimidated by anyone, or otherwise forced to vote in a certain way against their wishes, they should contact the Election Commissioner and give them all the relevant information, so the problem can be dealt with.

Thanks for the response, thought it wouldn't be possible anyway. The way it is done now is OK, I just thought it would make it more interesting if individual totals were hidden until the end, so nobody knows for sure who will win until it is over. As I usually miss the first few hours, around 90% of the time I know who will be elected before I even vote, as someone will be 5-10 votes ahead. Sure, it would still be the same result if votes were hidden, but you can't know for sure who is winning and it is always good to be able to think your vote may be making a difference.

Why not for judicial elections? Literally just curious.

Only Glen and I have been EC for judicial elections so far. While I can't speak for Glen, personally, I do it to make sure nobody uses more votes than they are entitled to. For instance, people voting for more than four candidates in an election with 5+ candidates for justice.

Because you can vote for up to 3 nominees in judicial elections, rather than just 1. The forum software does offer a setting to allow people to select more than 1 option in a poll, but there's no upper limit placed on it. So using polls would introduce the problem of people potentially voting for more than 3 nominees because the poll lets them.

Also the nature of the polls would mean that even if you could limit it, you could still get problematic ballots like "Candidate, RON, abstain", would you not?
