Most Important Question

[NATIONSTATES HANDBOOK STAFF]
[ARCHERINIA - FARENGETO - GOD EMPEROR - HEM - LLAMAS - THE LIFE STATES]

One question that we need to answer in order to start working on the NationStates Handbook Project is the following:

What else is there to do in NationStates?

I would like each of you (and anyone else in the Ministry Staff) to post your answer to that question.

What else is there to do in NS (NationStates) you ask? Well, first of all issues you can decide how many you get in the settings page. Issues are the main part of NS and answering them affects your nation. Then you can join the WA (World Assembly), there you can vote in things that will have a international impact. You can also propose your own resolution to the WA. Once becoming a WA member a lot more things open up to you.

Now you can endorse someone, and with luck they will endorse you back! Whoever has the most endorsements is the Delegate of the region. You can raid other regions after becoming a WA member, by going to another region with some friends and endorse one of you to overtake the Delegate in that region! You can also defend your region if someone and their friends attack the region!

You can also join the NS forum, where you can roleplay, talk to people all over the world, ask questions and just have good fun. You can chat to people on the RMB (Regional Messaging Board) and chat to people in different regions if we have an embassy with them and both have allowed to chat with people from that region. You can also found your own region, but be careful it's rare for a region founded by someone to have a lot of people on it and it is a good target for raiders and for large armies to target.

That's just the things you can do in NS! You can do so much more by joining our offsite forum, where there is even more fun to be had. Remember some of the things I have said like raiding and becoming the Delegate can only be done if you join the forums and do something's. But that's just in TSP (The South Pacific) in different regions there are different rules.

I've just said what you can do, I haven't explained much. This would be to make them want to stay you would have to explain things like raids and the WA to them. What do you think?

Well, you could also elaborate on the R/D alignments.

Sovereignist (quite rare these days from what I've heard)

Right now I'm more interested in your personal answers. Forget for a moment we are writing a Handbook and just answer the first thing that comes to your mind.

The question seems a bit vague, you ask "what else" without saying what the "what" is (I'm guessing it is creating your nation and answering your initial issues).

For me personally, the main thing I focus on with NS is getting the best WA rankings that I can. I set goals and work on achieving them. Originally, it was to get a single badge, then to get a top 1%, a top 10, regional #1 etc. Right now I'm aiming for 20 regional #1's - I'm currently on 18, with some close second places. I'll likely get there this year, and will need to set a new goal. Which I'm looking forward to.

Sure, it'll be difficult for a new nation to achieve similar results, it took me around 12 months before my first Top 10 for example. I have achieved all that in 3 years 9 months though, along with a fair few worldwide Top 100's, so I guess anything is possible. Set realistic, achievable goals if you want to do something similar.

I may seem a bit obsessed with this, but I don't care - I am happy with what I have achieved so far. I am also happy to encourage others efforts and keep track of the daily rankings on the forum. I enjoy that, as you can see your personal improvement over time if you post regularly.

Apart from that, I personally enjoy chatting on the RMB, responding to people that post there, helping out where possible or welcoming new nations. The more that do the same, the better it is. I encourage everyone to post more there.

Enough about myself, which I used as an example. Getting back to the question, I recommend a newbie spends a bit of time looking around and finding something they do like, as there is plenty that any nation can do. Like games, roleplay, randomness etc? Come to the forums. Want something like the UN? Join the WA and endorse the delegate /vice delegate/CSS. Just want to chat? You can post on the RMB, forum or IRC. Want to contribute to running the region? Start with the fellowship program or the Assembly.

Yeah, I know this question wasn't specifically directed at me, but thought I'd answer anyway.

For me, I come for the occasional laughs courtesy of the Corrupt A Wish thread, the RMB because I might find something interesting and for the opportunity to contribute to the region in any way I can.

Somewhat like Aram, I try to get as high up in the World Census ranks as I can, but only focusing on my nations strengths. As far as my nations themselves, I run three nations and each each one has different ideologies. I guess you could say it's more like an experiment for me.

I want to get right to the top of the environment WA rankings and most eco-friendly governments.

Perhaps I should introduce you to my eco-religious nation Tounge

You have a choice, my friend.

Either get involved in the brilliant, bright, toxic brew that is NationStates Gameplay, or get involed in the fast-paced, detailed, and time-consuming soup that is NationStates Roleplay. Or, you could not get involved in either, and just lurk around in a region.

But what fun is that?

(My essays are horrible. I can let someone else finish my thought.)

The beauty of NS is that it really is what you make of it. It won't hand you everything on a silver platter; if you want to be heard, you're gonna have to speak up. But, once you do, you find that it's a giant, multi-nation, experiment with one unspoken question: you are gifted a small country of people who will either prosper because you lift them or languish because you fail them. What are you going to do about it?

To me, it's my chance to see what sort of nation I would fashion based on a self-imposed veil of ignorance, which is one of my favorite concepts in terms of political philosophy. I am going to be born into a society, but I have no idea what my status will be. I could be homeless or egregiously rich; I could be male or female; I could be of the racial majority and blithely unaware of its advantages or on the bottom rung of the race ladder and painfully aware that people follow me around when I enter a store; I could be incredibly smart with a ton of gumption and can-do spirit or incredibly stupid with a tendency to allow opportunities pass me by. If I knew absolutely nothing about where I would land once all the cards have fallen, how would I structure society?

While the issues presented on the main site let me stretch my personal political theory muscles to a certain extent, I find the area with the most potential is on the forums. You can get as involved or not involved as you want. I get a kick out of reading a post that makes me feel compelled to reply, because then I have to figure out why I reacted strongly one way or the other and put it into words. This leads me to hone my own ideas and feel the sense of satisfaction that comes with the cognizant solidification of one's principles into a cogent statement.

If you're a person who relishes a political debate (either observing or engaging) and want to interact with others who do as well, here is a good place to try. The government as it currently stands on these forums already has a solid foundation and framework. It seems to me that what is happening now in terms of initiatives is geared at creating a level of depth to TSP's identity and temperament as a region. If you're also a person who wants to contribute to what could be the emergence of a regional identity that inspires a sense of unity amongst the nation members of TSP, this is where you look for that opportunity.
Turtles all the way down.
