The Karnetvorian National Team lines up before the match

In another brilliant effort, the Karnetvorian National Football Team beat the Imperial Union 3-0, winning their group and qualifying for the next round of the World Cup.

Although both teams had already ensured their qualification to the tournament’s second group stage, this match could be decisive, as it would decide who won the group. The match proceeded comfortably for the Karnetvorians (who had already beaten the IU earlier in the tournament) , as they scored two goals in the first half; the first by Dassayev, his third goal of the tournament, and the second by Kuzmanović, after an error in the Imperial defense. The second half saw fewer chances and a close call when a dangerous shot by the IU’s No. 10 was saved by the Karnetvorian goalkeeper, Valentin Ivarov. However, by the 80th minute, Roman Pavlukov managed to elude the defense and score from outside the penalty box, putting it 3-0.

In Karnetvor, the victory sparked celebrations in the streets, with President Kerenskiy congratulating the team on social media. Other personalities then stepped in, including famed comedian Simon Milošević, Minister of Defense Benson van Heyden, and SPTO Council Secretary Zelda Harkinyan.

This victory closes a remarkable first round for the Karnetvorians, which included a 5-0 win against Ryccia, the widest in the tournament so far, and the best goal difference among all the teams (+10), with an overall record of three wins and one draw. In the next round the team will face Group IV winners Irykia, and the hosts, Sedunn.

Draw: Karnetvor v Sedunn ends in 0-0
Karnetvor's Zdravko Kuzmanović is blocked by a Sedunnic midfielder

Karnetvor’s National Football Team has drawn 0-0 with World Cup hosts Sedunn, adding another chapter to both teams’ famed rivalry. Despite ample chances, the Karnetvorians were unable to get through the Sedunnic defense.

“It’s clear the Sedunners have improved in the last two days,” said Karnetvorian captain Dimitar Aliyev. “They managed to block us. We’ll have to change our tactics for next time”. The manager, Grigori van der Weyden, made a similar statement. “They pursued a defensive strategy. It worked for them today, but they’ll have to prepare for the next match”.

Indeed, the Sedunners pursued a more defensive strategy, after some disappointing results on the first group stage. The Karnetvorians, who kept the attacking style of play and 4-3-3 formation of their previous showings, had difficulty getting past the Sedunnic defenders, and there were some close calls due to Sedunnic counter-attacks on the second half. Despite this, Karnetvor had more shots on goal than Sedunn.

Both teams now have to count on winning against Irykia, the other team in the group, to increase their chances of progressing to the knockout stage.

Decisive Victory: Karnetvor defeats Irykia

De Alighieri celebrates after scoring his third goal so far in the tournament

After a thrilling 90 minutes, Karnetvor’s National Team defeated Irykia 3-1, putting them at one step from the knockout stages of the World Cup. The Karnetvorians, who were much more organized than in their previous match , managed to decisively overcome the same team which had defeated them three days ago.
The first half was a contested affair, with no team being able to score. Six minutes into the second half, an Irykian midfielder scored with a header, stunning the Karnetvorians. However, they quickly reorganized, and Pietro De Alighieri tied the game with a free kick. Fifteen minutes later, Mordechai Weissman gave Karnetvor the lead after a flawless counter-attack.
With five minutes remaining, Alexander Yaković, who had replaced De Alighieri, scored his first goal in the tournament, after a shot by Dassayev bounced off the Irykian goalkeeper. After the final whistle, celebrations erupted among the players, coaches and the Karnetvorian fans in attendance. Manager Van der Weyden, although he shared the players’ happy mood, urged them and the fans to “show a bit of restraint. There are still lots of matches left”.

After this victory, Karnetvor has almost ensured qualification to the knockout stage, only needing a draw, although a win against Sedunn, its next opponent, would leave them as group winners. Irykia has to hope Karnetvor loses at least by three goals to qualify.

Presidential Election Campaign Starts

The campaign for the 2017 Presidential Elections, the first one since the end of the Civil War, has officially started.

In the first speech of the campaign, President Yaleksandr Kerenskiy, who is standing for reelection, spoke about the foreign policy accomplishments of his presidency, mainly the South Pacific Treaty Organization and the restoration of the alliance with Sedunn. "Believe what you believe, it cannot be denied that in these last two years we have established an important presence abroad. With this network of friends around the world the security of this country is assured". First Lady Nadia Kerenskina also appeared, together with notable figures of the President's party, the left-wing People's Party, and its coalition partner, the center-left Social-Democratic Party. The one notable exception was Vice-President Sergei Voroshilov, who has had very few public appearances in the last two months, with rumors circulating about his health.

On the other side of the spectrum, Conservative Party leader and candidate Andrew Falke made a speech in Endville, promising to fix the "disastrous" economic policies of the Government, to "secure our borders", and to boost military spending "to ensure nobody can threaten this country's wellbeing, and protect our interests abroad". The centrist Democratic Party also began campaigning, with candidate Dimitri Aliyev, known for his role as Vice-President during the Nationalist regime from 2007-2012, promising to create jobs and to eliminate "some unnecessary bureaucracy and regulations, which have hurt our businesses".

Although Kerenskiy has high approval ratings, about 55% according to polling, the election is predicted to be a close one, with the Conservatives in particular having increased levels of popularity during the last few years. Karnetvor uses a two-round system, where if a candidate does not receive an outright majority the two candidates with the most votes face off in a second round to decide the winner. The election is scheduled for September 16th, the third Sunday of September.
