International politics | Kaufman condemns "Ryccian aggression"
By Tara Cross, KTN News
Monday, 14 October 2019

Stockholm (KTN) — Valkyrian Chancellor Stella Kaufman has condemned Ryccia for what she calls "aggression" on their part. In the Chancellor's condemnation, she listed three grievances: the "infringement of the religious rights and freedoms" of the Valkyrian people in Ryccia, the establishment of military bases in Ela, and the "infringement of the national sovereignty" of the Imperial Frost Federation. In the National Assembly, Kaufman stated that the Valkyrian Republic will expel the Ryccian ambassador from the country if Ryccia "commits any further aggression".

By Tara Cross, KTN News
Monday, 14 October 2019

Kalaium (KTN) — The Valkyrian Defence Forces have announced that a multirole combat aircraft (MCRA) has crashed near the Hystaigan border. According to the military, the two co-pilots failed to eject before the crash, dying upon impact. The details as to how and why the aircraft crashed have yet to be declared by the VDF. Valkyrian Chancellor Stella Kaufman announced that she is "tracking the situation" and will make a detailed statement when "all of the facts are known". This is a developing story.

International news | Kaufman accuses Hystaiga of shooting down Valkyrian jet
By Tara Cross, KTN News
Monday, 28 October 2019

Stockholm (KTN) — After two weeks of investigation, Valkyrian Chancellor Stella Kaufman made a statement on the floor of the National Assembly, accusing the Hystaigan government of shooting down a Valkyrian fighter jet. On 14 October, the fighter jet was impacted by a surface-to-air missile, as the chancellor alleges, destroying the aircraft and killing the two co-pilots. Kaufman said that an emergency meeting of the Valkyrian Defence Council will be convened to "weigh the options" in which Valkyria will respond. Blisse Starke, the Supreme Voice of Hystaiga, denied the accusation that her government shot down the aircraft, calling the incident "a pretext for war".

International news | Silence at Mount Kalkara as Hystaiga and Valkyria approach war
By Michael Williams, KTN News
Friday, 1 November 2019

Kalkara (KTN) — Along the mountainous border that demarcates Hystaiga and Valkyria, the military bases nearby have been placed on high alert in both states. Military personnel in both Hystaiga and Valkyria are awaiting orders from their commanding officers, expecting the word of war to be uttered anytime soon. Civilian population centres on both sides of the border have been advised to take precautionary measures in the event that they may have to move out. For the first time in five years, the people of Valkyria may fight in another war. However, this time the war is far more closer to home than the 2014 war with Sporaltryus. This time, the state that Valkyria may go to war with is one that shares a border with it. If a conflict arises, the geopolitical consequences may very well be far greater to the country than the Great War of 2014.

For Valkyria, the state had underwent annual reductions to the military budget while Margaret Harrison was the chancellor, but the country's military technology and doctrine is up-to-date compared to Hystaiga. Following a policy of isolationism for more than half a century, the Hystaigan military has not seen conflict since the 1950s war with the Valkyrian Empire, when Marshall Fallen had ruled over the predecessor state of Valkyria as dictator. It is unclear as to whether the Hystaigan Defence Force will be able to stand on even footing against the Valkyrian Defence Forces.

Thus far, international reaction to the prospect of war between the two states has been quiet, even while both Hystaiga and Valkyria are members of the World Forum. Both Valkyrian Chancellor Stella Kaufman and Hystaigan Supreme Voice Blisse Starke have made appeals to other nations to support them. However, other nations still have not decided who they will support in the event that war breaks out.

International news | Kaufman to call for vote on declaration of war
By Tara Cross, KTN News
Friday, 1 November 2019

Stockholm (KTN) — Valkyrian Chancellor Stella Kaufman gave a speech before the National Assembly on Friday, calling for a declaration of war against Hystaiga. Kaufman has accused the neighbouring nation of committing "atrocious acts" against the Valkyrian Republic, blaming the Hystaigan government, not only for the 14 October incident in which a Valkyrian fighter jet was shot down, but also for the 13 June chemical attack on a nightclub in Stockholm that resulted in the death of 192 people, "The National Police and the Intelligence Directorate-General have brought it to my attention that there is no non-state actor that can conceivably conduct an attack on Valkyria with chemical weapons and leave very little evidence of their responsibility." The Valkyrian chancellor also stated that the Hystaigan government actively maintains a chemical weapons arsenal similar to those used in the attack.

Internationally, nations have been urging restraint, especially Sedunnic foreign minister Hevv Gjieramm, who called upon the Valkyrian Republic to show that it is "one of the reasonable grown-ups on the international stage". However, Valkyrian Foreign Secretary Bradley Murphy countered by stating, "The Valkyrian Republic was attacked twice in four months by a foreign actor that has already killed at least 194 people and injured many more in our nation. It is our imperative to defend our national sovereignty and proportionately respond to attacks against our people." Murphy, who leads the Centrist Democratic Party, the junior member of the New Conservative Coalition, has stated that he will support the decision that the chancellor makes, even if it means war with Hystaiga.

The office of Home Secretary Nicole Chancellor published a press release in which the Home Secretary stated that she would support the chancellor and a war in Hystaiga "in order to avenge those who were killed by the ruthless aggression of Hystaiga". The Home Secretary went further to accuse Hystaigan Supreme Voice Blisse Starke of committing crimes against humanity, blaming her for the 13 June attack in Stockholm. At a minimum, the government has at least 315 votes in support of war, but will need two-thirds of both chambers of Parliament to successfully declare war on Hystaiga. In the National Assembly, 412 votes in the affirmative will be needed for a declaration of war to be passed, which will need support from Members of Parliament in the Opposition.

In response to the call for war, Opposition Leader Avianna Aldridge said that "conflict may be necessary" and would allow the members of the Labor Party to vote freely on the matter of a declaration of war. Populist Left leader Taeler Shaw also expressed that "recent aggression by Hystaiga has forced Valkyria's hand". However, Socialist leader Amalia Rollins broke from the positions of the other two leaders of the Alliance of Social Democrats by arguing that there "isn't enough evidence to suggest that Hystaiga was responsible for the attacks", which was met with jeers from members of the New Conservative Coalition in the National Assembly. The other two opposition parties in the National Assembly—the Liberal Party and The Greens—have stated that they will vote freely on the matter.

International news | Valkyria formally declares war on Hystaiga
By Tara Cross, KTN News
Tuesday, 5 November 2019

Stockholm (KTN) — On Tuesday, the Valkyrian Republic declared war on the Union of Hystaiga after passing with enough support in both chambers of Parliament. In the National Assembly, 446 members voted in support of the declaration, well above the two-thirds threshold of 412 votes. With 315 members of the National Assembly being part of the governing bloc, the parties in power relied on the support of 127 opposition lawmakers after nine Centrist Democrats voted against the declaration and seven members of the New Conservative Coalition abstained.

Final vote: 446 in favour, 157 in opposition, 14 absentions (press here to interact)

Due to the importance of the declaration, the fifty anonymous members of the Citizens Assembly who were chosen by sortition were summoned to Stockholm for the second time. Normally, the members of this chamber would be allowed seven days to vote on legislation from their homes by internet, but they were called upon by the National Assembly to vote in person. With 34 votes being the threshold to pass, 44 members of the Citizens Assembly voted in favour of the declaration. Now that the declaration of war has passed in both chambers of Parliament, Defence Secretary Elena Haig has ordered the mobilisation of the Valkyrian Defence Forces.

International news | Kaufman calls Huawan tariffs a "betrayal"
By Lyle Williams, KTN News
Friday, 8 November 2019

Stockholm (KTN) — The office of Chancellor Stella Kaufman issued a press release condemning Huawan for implementing tariffs against Valkyria, calling it a "betrayal" and "a violation of existing trade agreements" between the two countries. Peonic official Kim Sol justified the implementation of tariffs as being a result of "inactive communication" between the two governments and preventing economic crisis. In response to this action taken by Huawan, Valkyrian trade secretary Kari Markussen announced the implementation of retaliatory tariffs and threatened to close the Mikotoba tunnel, a key centre of trade between the two countries.

Valkyrian politics | Rollins stepping down as Socialist leader
By Allie Vega, KTN News
Wednesday, 1 January 2020

Stockholm (KTN) — On Wednesday, Amalia Rollins announced that she will resign as Leader of the Socialist Party. The Socialist leader served in the position since being seated in Parliament on 19 June 2017, but will leave the position once her successor is elected. Rollins did not specify why she was resigning, but the resignation comes while her party is being viewed as unpopular due to their opposition to the Kalkara War. The election to succeed her is due to happen in late January or early February. According to party sources, the favorite to win the leadership election is deputy leader Steve Bennett, who represents Stockholm's 2nd constituency.

Valkyrian politics | Parliament passes security and stimulus bill
By Allie Vega, KTN News
Saturday, 28 March 2020

Stockholm (KTN) — In a special session of Parliament, legislators in the National Assembly passed the Emergency Preparedness and Response Act 2020 (EPRA 20) with near unanimity in a remote vote when all Members of Parliament voted from home due to the GID-20 pandemic. The new law provided a broad definition of Valkyria's emergency powers and economic stimulus for everyone within the country facing hardship amid a national quarantine.

With the passage of EPRA 20, the bill gave power to the national government to invoke a moratorium on evictions for renters, homeowners, and small businesses; make direct payments of 2,000 Pacific credits each month to all Valkyrian residents, regardless of citizenship; and provide subsidies to businesses and trade unions among several other provisions. The legislation also bolsters the existing lockdown protocols invoked by the national government.

Immediately after its passage, President Kate Murphy invoked EPRA 20 and all of the powers granted to the government by the bill. The invocation has led to a five-week national lockdown that will continue the closure of all schools and non-essential businesses, enforcement of social distancing, and prohibition of all non-essential travel and gatherings of more than five people. The National Gendarmerie has been mobilised nationwide to enforce the lockdown.

Human rights organisations in Valkyria have acknowledged the need of such legislation for the pandemic but expressed concern about the bill's potential to be abused by the government in an effort to curtail civil rights and liberties. Malcolm Trelawney, the president of the Human Rights Protection Centre, noted that EPRA 20 could be regarded as "an expansion to the Expansion of Security Powers Act 2019" due to the security powers it grants to the government.

In contrast to human rights organisations, health organisations such as the Valkyrian Medical Association and Valkyrian Nurses Association have both announced their support for the bill and and the actions taken by the president. Emilia Stark, the executive director of the VNA, told KTN News that "a temporary curtailment of civil liberties is a necessary sacrifice to improve the public health of Valkyria during the outbreak".
