The Uraktiksak are a sentient species of the Ryccian Empire.

History

The Uraktiksak are a species native to the planet Artaknti, in the Velmino region. Conquered by the ancient Velpan Grand Authority, they were considered horrific in appearance, and were oppressed and brutalized with slave labour and high taxes, with some beings even subject to scientific experiments. Rebellions did occur, but the VGA caused a great deal of suffering to the Uraktiksak, even going so far as wiping out entire populations from various areas of their homeworld. For this, Velpan planets today now pay subsidies to this race as part of the Victim Species Atonement Act.

When the Velpans themselves were conquered by the human Ryccian Empire, their new human overlords also saw the Uraktiksak as demonic creatures. Unlike the Velpans, however, they freed the species, but they were also tyrannized and drafted into the armed forces as a sort of frightening beast infantry and torture tools instead.

When the Democratic Revolution finally came, the Uraktiksak experienced their first taste of liberty in several millennia, and their planet was granted greater autonomy compared to other systems as the Artaknti Pacifist Republic.

Culture and Language

Despite their looks, the Uraktiksak actually have a pacifist culture. Recognizing their aggressive impulses as a mainly carnivorous and highly competitive species, the ancient Uraktiksak civilizations imposed in themselves ideas of a complete and total pacifist existence, only killing when absolutely necessary, when clearly and obviously brutalized by their rulers, when needing to feed themselves from their livestock, or when at war. This philosophical current came to be as both a way to reduce the high murder rate they had, and as a way for local leaders to control their populace.

Murder in their culture is severely punished, and seen as the worst thing you could ever do. As a result, little to no Uraktiksak politicians could be ever considered "war hawks", practicing what some other species have remarked "the most respectful and peaceful form of politics they have ever seen", and their native Artaknti is a staunch Pacifist Coalition world, with their Senators almost always advocating peace and diplomacy when possible.

The religion of the Uraktiksak revolves around worshipping their star, known to humans as Artaknti, after the planet, but to the Uraktiksak it is "Schei'kkro-Gae(high-pitched growl)(low-pitched screech)ti", which literally means "Light Center" in their language. They also worship elements of nature. To them, the stars are living creatures, as they are formed of so many hydrogen and helium atoms, that, although not sentient nor even aware, they live. They reason that every single atom has a soul, and when many atoms combine, their trillions of souls become one entity, like a sentient being, a plant or a star. To them, everything has a soul, and if it provides life to them, they worship it (which is why they see all the bodies of water of the world as deities). Historians believe that, originally, the Uraktiksak were animists of a different religion, but when the Velpans and their knowledge arrived, astronomical and chemical science and their animistic belief syncretised to form a new faith.

Despite being a territorial and fiercely competitive species, the Uraktiksak, due to their pacifist culture, actually do marry, and husbands and wives are expected to be loyal to each other until they die. Divorce can be achieved if the couple has no children, but if they do, it is harder to obtain. In this aspect, they are socially conservative, highly valuing the family and spousal loyalty.

Strangely, although homosexuality and transgenderism are perfectly legal, they are extremely rare. Due to their scarcity, homosexuals and the transgendered are thought to be by the supersticious as some sort of alternating life force, divine for their rarity. The transgendered are especially sacred, as they are thought to have multiple souls at once according to their religion, and can channel them. In the ancient past, transgender Uraktiksak served as an elite class in their animist priesthood as spirit mediums.

The Uraktiksak vocal chords can allow them to speak the lingua franca of the Empire, English, but they can only produce it in a "raspy" accent with several-pitched tones, as their native tongue is a series of different-pitched yet highly sophisticated roars, screeches and growls, as well as actual human-like sounds.

Biology

Their diet mostly consists of meat from their livestock or prey, but they can also consume some plants if need be. Their peace-loving society also demands that any animal to be consumed must have its life ended as humanely as possible, and, when eating the meat proper, they always look at the carcass and say "I am sorry for eating you" before beginning to enjoy their food. Although a plant-based diet is possible, their biology is so intricately involved with meat-eating, that any such way of life would result in a weak physical state, comparable to a human being undernourished or wrongly fed.

They live for around 60 to 65 years, with the oldest specimen recorded living for 82 years and 5 months. They are born out of eggs the mothers produce, with an incubation period of 5 months. A mother can produce 2 to 6 eggs for every batch, and cannot produce more for 8 months. The Uraktiksak reach sexual and physical maturity when they are 12 years old, but they reach psychological maturity earlier, at 10. As a result, the adult age of the Uraktiksak is 10, but their drinking and consent age is higher, at 13.

Other Facts

There is more than one Uraktiksak diaspora in the Ryccian Empire. They can be generally categorized into three: the Velpan diaspora, the Human diaspora, and the Imperial diaspora.

The Velpan diaspora originated when the ancient Velpan regime took some Uraktiksak as offworld slaves, and settled them in various planets. Almost stripped of their culture, when they were "freed" by the Ryccian Empire, they were isolated into their own communities, possessing a different culture than that of Artaknti. These Uraktiksak speak a different language, have a far more violent culture, and are generally atheists. The Artaknti government is currently attempting to spread the original culture to them in collaboration with various Velpan worlds as a way to lower their high murder rate and hostile tendencies, but some critics argue that economic reform in favour of these communities is also needed.

The Human diaspora originated when Imperial forces took some Uraktiksak as machines of war. As a result, they concentrate mainly on historical military worlds that had important garrisons. Unlike the Velpan diaspora, these Uraktiksak kept their culture mostly intact, albeit they are a bit more violent and accepting of killing due to the military service that was forced upon them.

The Imperial diaspora is the only wave that was completely voluntary. These Uraktiksak fully retain their culture, and can be thought of more as expats or recent immigrants than a distinct community. They mostly migrated searching economic opportunity off-world, with most of these residing in the Farlands or The Imperial Rim.

Concordia is a moon orbiting the planet of Mandalore in The Rim.

Concordia and Mandalore have been inextricably linked since the Mandalorian civilization was born. It was originally founded as a farming colony.

History

Mandalore was founded by mutinous Imperial soldiers and officers, who looked down upon the “softness” of the Emperor at the time. They wished to create a new “martial, disciplined” society, proud of a warrior tradition.

Concordia was the second world the Mandalorians colonized after Mandalore itself. It was originally founded as a farming colony to provide more food to the main planet of Mandalore. The historical Vizsla clan comes from here, one of the most militaristic and respected clans of Mandalore. The Ryccian Imperial Army pays a premium salary for Vizsla clan members and other Concordians to serve in the Imperial Mandalorian Army, making remittances a noticeable part of the planetary economy.

In the Mandalorian wars, the moon served as the first frontline when the Ryccian forces faced the Mandalorians in their capital system. It was regarded as strategic to take it over as a base to properly invade Mandalore, although, in the last war, the Ryccian forces ignored it entirely and invaded the planet in order to fool the Mandalorians, who were expecting the first assault to begin at Concordia and thus fortified the moon in preparation.

After beskar iron was discovered in Concordia 2,300 years ago, the local Concordian clans and the Ryccian Empire fought over who would control the emerging mines. The Ryccian government initially attempted to suppress opposition through local rulers, but the Concordians revolted, commencing the Concordian Uprising. Although the Empire put down the revolt brutally, it was forced to concede when other Mandalorian worlds threatened to revolt in solidarity with Concordia. To this day, all mining operations are under the control of the Concordian government, which mines the ore slowly in order to both preserve the environment and avoid immigration from offworlders. Moreover, the Concordian Uprising is remembered as one of the first acts of resistance against the Old Empire in Mandalorian space. The Concordians who died in that war are seen as martyrs by both the Ryccian Empire and the Mandalorians. They are honoured every year in a local ceremony where even the Ryccian government's representative takes part.

The moon has been in conflict with Mandalorian nationalists, arguing that the central Mandalorian government and Concordia should “collaborate” on mining operations for the “[Mandalorian] national interest”. Such ambitions are fiercely opposed by both mainstream Concordian politicians and conservationists, fearing that the central government may extract ore faster than the locals desire and thus ruin the environment. The controversy has attracted national attention several times in the last century whenever a nationalist Mandalorian government is elected, with Concordian Senators repeatedly petitioning the Imperial Senate to protect it on behalf of their homeworld. The Braaschaatian Senators of all people are known to be one of their strongest allies in the chamber outside of Mandalorian Senators, which is an interesting oddity when it is considered that Braaschaat and Concordia are so far apart and share nothing historically. Due to this, relations between Braaschaat and Concordia have strengthened considerably.

Geography

Concordia is an Earth-like moon, with most of its biomes being temperate forests and mountains. It has rich beskar iron reserves that it extracts slowly.

As mentioned previously, Concordia controls all mining operations in the world. The moon owns all mines under the Concordian Mining Administration.

Planetary Behaviour and Characteristics

Concordia has a rotation of 21 hours. Unlike normal worlds, the Imperial standard is unheard of, with locals only relying on Mandalorian time.

Concordia’s orbit is 58 days. Again, the natives do not use the Imperial standard, instead making use of the Mandalorian calendar.

Concordia’s atmosphere is also composed of oxygen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and argon.

Concordia is 0.16x times bigger than the Earth.

The House of Lords is a de facto advisory body of the Imperial Grand Assembly.

History

The House of Lords first originated in the Old Empire 5,000 years ago, when the titled aristocracy of ancient Ryccia demanded some legal say over the running of the country. Thus, the First Parliament was convened, and what would eventually become the House of Lords was born. The Palace of Northsminster, a building constructed for the purpose, housed this legislature, and it continues to host the House of Lords to this day. The design and structure of the palace has been left practically unchanged in its existence, save the regular maintenance and technological upgrades. But the chairs the current Lords sit in are the same exact design that were utilized thousands of years ago.

Having limited legal power, the Imperial Parliament was a rubber stamp the majority of the time, but there were times when nobles rebelled against the Imperial regime or had power struggles with it, and thus challenged it through Parliament.

Eventually a now-defunct chamber, the House of Commons, was established 2,500 years ago in order to represent the wealthy and non-titled human citizens of the Empire. It too had limited powers, and was subservient to the House of Lords in many times of its history.

When the Democratic Revolution finally came a millenia ago, abolishing the House of Lords was seriously considered. But, in order to avoid inflaming the minority royalist population, it was kept, albeit it was always intended to be scrapped in the future. However, it continued to survive when politicians started appointing life peers to it, thus giving senior ministers and high-ranking party members some sort of glorified retirement by obtaining noble life titles.

The House of Lords is now mostly ceremonial, even more declawed than its Old Imperial de facto predecesor. Instead of passing laws as one of the official three chambers of the Imperial Grand Assembly, it only has advisory powers. There is a chance for the Lords to delay voting on and propose amendments to a bill that both the Imperial Congress and the Imperial Senate must consider, but that requires a 65% majority vote. This clause was last enacted 350 years ago, when Lords worried regarding a military spending cuts bill, and thus decided to propose amendments to it. In Ryccian popular culture, it is seen as a political retirement club for the most elite of politicians, with former Chancellors, Ministers, influential Governors, Senators and Congressmen being nominated by the ruling government of the time for the Emperor to approve. In order to prevent an unlimited amount of life peers, each government is limited to appointing 100 Lords per term. If a government is re-elected twice, it gets to approve 200; if thrice, then 300, and so on.

There are also independent life peers. Some include influential and/or retired members of the financial world, but there are also popular musicians, athletes, lawyers, former judges, scientists, and so on.

Life peers are not the only type of Lords that belong to the chamber. There are 100 hereditary peers, which are mostly members of historical noble families of the Core and The Rim, but some descendants of former alien royals and nobles were granted membership after the Democratic Revolution as a way to recognize their lineages. Further, the Mandalorian Royal Family, the Kryze clan, holds a hereditary seat, with anyone from the Kryze family wishing to occupy the post doing so by internal agreement.

Royal peers also exist. They are comprised of 10 of the most closely related persons by blood to the Emperor, as well as any surviving 10 of past monarchs. Similar to life peers, royal peerage is not inheritable.

The last group to compose the House of Lords are military peers, which are limited to a maximum of ten. These are retired top Generals and Admirals, and thus tend to be one of the oldest groups in the House of Lords.

Euphemia Charlotte-Imperial is the Empress Dowager of the Ryccian Empire.

History

Euphemia was born as the second-eldest child of the now-previous Grand Duchess of Constantinople. She was given an elite education and grew up surrounded by luxury. However, on her 15th birthday, her mother, the Grand Duchess, thought that Euphemia was getting far too obsessed with shopping and “being popular”, so she sent her daughter to live with less wealthier and distant relatives in The Imperial Rim.

Being denied her wants, her life suffered a dramatic turn. It is here where her business sense was nurtured, as the Grand Duchess told her that she would never return to Constantinople until she “demonstrated that she was worthy”. In order to impress her mother, she took some money and started engaging in the stock market as an amateur. Despite her failed investments, the Grand Duchess was impressed that she went that far, and recalled her home at the age of 18, helping her get to study at the Imperial Academy.

Euphemia was a star student in university, being acclaimed for her excellent grades and model conduct, as well as for her political activism. It is here where she met her future husband, the late Emperor Louis III. At that time, he was only an Imperial Prince, as his sister, the Crown Princess of the time, had not died due to health difficulties.

After graduating, she went to the Imperial Academy Business School. Notably, she graduated early, at 24 years old. That interest in politics from university never left her, as she decided to run for the Imperial Congress in the list of the Freedom Party, who was one of the many parties that wanted to appeal to younger voters by putting candidates of her age in their list. The party managed to obtain enough votes for her to qualify as a Congresswoman.

She was initially billed as a successor to the management of the financial empire of the House of Charlotte, but she stunned the family by refusing the offer, wishing to invest and work by herself. In her words she desired to be “not another Charlotte-Imperial, but my own person in the business world”. Wishing to focus on growing her investments, she left politics and re-entered the business world fully.

In her business ventures, she met the then-Imperial Crown Prince Louis, who also opted for a financial career. They dated for three years and decided to marry in secret, so as to not draw any attention from the press. They had to make their marriage public eventually in 1003, when she gave birth to their eldest son, the current Emperor Alexander.

When her husband became the Emperor in 1005, she and her husband defied convention by refusing to leave their financial careers. This was a controversial move, and some within the royal family called for the new Emperor’s abdication, but the new Empress Consort Euphemia and the Emperor resisted any calls for them to step down. Moreover, she caused further controversy by airing her political opinions freely, something perceived as taboo for the Imperial Throne since the Democratic Revolution.

Euphemia was a philanthropist, giving some of her earnings to various organizations to promote public interest in business and general learning, as well as giving to poor relief and natural disaster charities.

In early 1028, she was the target of an assassination attempt by a radical republican due to her openness in expressing her political views, but was shielded by her husband, the Emperor Louis. The wounds were too fatal to be cured, and thus he died a few months later. It is rumoured that she went into a severe depression from which she has still not recovered, and that she blames herself for her late husband’s murder. She has stopped her public appearances and has ceased voicing her opinions, but she is still present on important ceremonies sometimes. Many citizens of the Empire feel sympathy for her and keep sending her heart-warming messages, including old-fashioned paper letters. Given that paper is rare due to its uselessness in a highly-technological society, it is expensive, but writing on this material is an art the royal family and some human nobles still preserve. Thus, sending paper letters is thought to be a way to connect with the Empress Dowager, for writers to express their most heart-felt sympathies for her loss and wish her well. It is rumoured that she does read some messages when she is either in a good or incredibly depressed state.

Facts

Euphemia is known to love horse racing and equestrianism. An ancient sport that only some parts of the Core preserve, horse racing is seen as a high-end, aristocratic event. As she aged, though, she began to purchase horses for others to race instead of racing herself.

After withdrawing from public life, her daughter, the Princess Imperial Anastasia, manages her assets at her request.

Septembrius Sorventia is the Grand Duke of Nova Daonlathas and the leader of the Imperial Sorventia Group.

History

Septembrius was born in the Core world of Ventus, when his mother was attending a leisure trip and gave birth early. Born into the luxurious aristocracy of the Core, Septembrius was given an excellent education and lifestyle.

Amongst his siblings, he was, notably, the most skilled and intelligent. Due to this, he ultimately succeeded his father as the Grand Duke of Nova Daonlathas and as Chairman of the Imperial Sorventia Group despite being a middle child. He attended the Imperial Academy, the Empire's top university and graduated with full honours.

After completing his higher studies, he married Princess-Imperial Luxia, an ambitious businesswoman from the royal family and aunt of the current Emperor. Both of them have worked in the finance sector their entire lives.

When his Father died in 1020 ADR, Septembrius took over the leadership of his family's business empire. He has been leading the Imperial Sorventia Group these past 11 years as its Chairman.

Facts

It is an open secret to those who know Septembrius that he and his wife, Luxia, married purely out of financial convenience. Septembrius married Luxia in order to gain the business contacts and prestige of the royal family. Luxia, for her part, had investments in the Imperial Sorventia Group's businesses, and thus she married Septembrius in order to increase her own influence in the companies of the holding group. This kind of consented arraigned marriage is not unheard of amongst the elite. Thus, the marriage is loveless and has not been consummated. Their children were secretly conceived via in-vitro fertilization in order to appease Septembrius's dream of raising a family and having an heir.

It is rumoured that the only persons Septembrius truly loves apart from his parents and siblings are his three children. He devoted himself to them as much as he could in their youth, and was extensively involved in raising them.

The Sorventia were established millenia ago, when the youngest brother of the Emperor and of the founder of the Charlottes, the Imperial Prince Charles, was granted the governorship of a colony as its Grand Duke.

Just like the Charlottes, over the centuries, the non-hereditary descendants of this house were given lesser noble titles. As a result, almost all of the local nobility in Nova Daonlathas are actually cadet branches of the House of Sorventia or are otherwise related to them in some way, and they look up to them with great esteem.

Even after their hereditary governorship was removed, the Sorventia continued to be influential as the second-oldest of the Grand Imperial Houses. Unlike the Charlottes and many other houses, the Sorventia largely removed themselves from politics in the Imperial Court, preferring to instead solely invest their fortune in business. This was considered a bad move back then, but it has now payed off, as the vast business empire of the Sorventia began to influence Ryccia more than the politically-oriented houses in the Late Old Empire. With the hereditary influence of the Grand Imperial Houses removed after the Democratic Revolution, the power of the Sorventia family only grew compared to their peers. Today, the Imperial House of Sorventia and its holding group, the Imperial Sorventia Group, are some of the most prestigious and influential institutions in the entire country.

Like most of the Grand Imperial Houses, the family has distant relatives and noble possessions in other planets in the Core. The House of Sorventia-Anoreta in the planet of Anoreta in the Farlands is the only official branch of the family that lives outside the Core and that regularly interacts with the main house. All other relatives are illegitimate, descendants of expelled members in the past, descendants of migrants to far-flung regions of the Empire, and/or migrated so far in antiquity that these cadet branches have no relation to them anymore.

Trivia

Out of all the Grand Imperial Houses, the Sorventia marry the most for financial convenience. The last time a Grand Duke of this house married for love was half a millenia ago. Some families of the Grand Imperial Houses, especially the less wealthier ones, are not in good terms with them due to their disdain of such practices.

The Honesta Deditionem is a philosophical current prevalent in the Ryccian Empire. The name literally means "Honourable Surrender" in Latin. The Honesta Deditionem essentially stipulates that surrender is the most honourable way to end a battle if all other options are exhausted. Prisoners of war are to be held under fair conditions, and thus killing them en masse is dishonourable. Fighting on until the bitter end if it does not serve a strategic purpose is seen as wasteful and barbaric, as it spills unnecessary blood.

As a result of this philosophy, Ryccians are prone to seek peace and/or surrender more frequently than other cultures. Some regions are the exception, such as the Mandalorians, who have an ultra-militaristic culture.

History

The Honesta Deditionem philosophy of war first arose in the later years of the Old Empire amongst a minority of the aristocracy as a way to avoid the spillage of blood. The aristocracy in general was turning away from the ultra-militaristic principles of the early Old Empire due to the long periods of peace and prosperity the later Old Empire brought to the human race.

When the New Empire, the one that arose after the Democratic Revolution more than a thousand years ago, came into being, this peaceful philosophy's adoption in the Empire only accelerated. Today, it is the prevailing method of thinking in the Imperial military, with only a minority having militaristic values.

King (or its female equivalent "Queen") in the Ryccian Empire refers to an extraordinary non-hereditary title of nobility. It is only granted to those who have given a legendary service for the Empire. The last time this title was granted to any being was more than a thousand years ago, when the most outstanding Generals, Admirals and key civilian members of the democratic rebellion were granted such peerages.

The children of Kings and Queens become hereditary Imperial Princes upon the death of their distinguished parent, although this title can only be inherited by direct descendants. If a hereditary prince fails to have any heirs, their title officially becomes extinct. These princes are the only non-royals of their kind, and they are next in line for the throne after the titled members of the royal family despite not having any familial connections.

Kamino is a planet of historical significance in the Kaminoan Core.

The birthplace of the Kaminoan race, Kamino is an ecumenopolis and the cultural and historical capital of the Kaminoan civilization. Its influence as a planet holds great sway over regions dominated by Kaminoans, with the residents there seeing Kamino as the most cultured, respected and affluent world in their civilization.

History

Kamino was initially founded as a racial technocracy, where the colour of one’s eyes determined someone’s purity and role in society regardless of family origin. The ancient Kaminoan state colonized other planets as global warming on their own nearly engulfed their lands. Although this disaster was reversed, the Kaminoan Technocracy sought to expand its borders in order to ensure the safety of their species.

Kamino was one of the last states to be conquered by the Ryccian Empire in 1500 BDR. The Kaminoan Technocracy, albeit defeated, earned the respect of the Emperor for its “correct ideals” and technological prowess. The Ryccians permitted a puppet state to rule some areas of the previous Kaminoan state for five decades until the Kaminoans were ready for annexation. Despite being inferior under the laws of the Old Empire, the Kaminoans had a higher standing among other races due to their technological superiority over them. In the Kaminoan territories, some collaborationist Kaminoans were even allowed to serve as deputies to the ruling human governors.

In the Democratic Revolution, the Kaminoan territories were one of the last areas to revolt as the Kaminoan leaders weighed their options. Evermore pragmatic as a race, the Kaminoans initially favoured the Old Empire as they did not wish to lose their elevated standing and risk their safety. It was only when the rebellion started to turn the tide that the Kaminoan aristocrats encouraged their race to revolt en masse and joined the rebellion.

Initially, the Kaminoans considered secession when the war was over. However, in what is now known as the legendary “Speech to the Kaminoans”, the new Empress Alice personally travelled to Kamino, spoke in Kaminoan at the Ruling Council and promised the Kaminoans that they would find prosperity, equality and freedom in the New Empire. “A new state is being forged, preaching unity in diversity and freedom for all. I wish that the Kaminoans be part of this new future that we shall all share as one Ryccian people, equal regardless of race”. The “Speech to the Kaminoans” silenced any serious talk of secession as many Kaminoans pledged loyalty to the Empress and this New Empire.

Geography

Kamino is an ecumenopolis. However, the planet itself experiences a temperate climate, with the tropical equator and arctic poles being the exception.

Kamino has a rotation of 27 hours, on which the Kaminoan standard is based. The Imperial standard is mainly used by non-Kaminoans and Kaminoans who deal with other planets.

Kamino has three satellites: Korasa, Aiwhania and Kurilin. Only Korasa is visible at night, and none of them are habitable.

The New Territories are a category of worlds terraformed after the Ryccian Empire’s technological capabilities in this field improved tremendously a thousand years ago. Unlike the traditional regions of the Empire, which are astrographically demarcated, the New Territories are spread everywhere across the country. As they were colonized immediately after the Democratic Revolution, the New Territories are some of the most racially diverse and least populated group of worlds in the nation. Around 9,700 systems, previously uninhabitable or only having artificial settlements, comprise this category. Most of these worlds are rural and/or used for mining, albeit a tiny few have become industrial planets. The New Territories are popularly known in Ryccian culture as one of the three great bread baskets of the country, along with the Farlands and The Imperial Rim.

Due to their small populations, only 7,700 worlds have representation in the Senate individually, with the rest joining other worlds in terms of Senatorial representation. Out of the Empire’s mighty 48 trillion population, only 1.5 trillion beings live in the New Territories. Families are usually large in these planets due to the vast availability of land and the need of familial aid and cooperation in the farms.
