It's time to name things after me

What tradition?

It's a common thing that you don't name something after someone when they are still part of it, or if they are still alive. A few years ago they tried to name a road in NY Billy Joel Boulevard, and that got shot down fast, as Billy Joel is still alive.

I know this is a game, and everything, but even then, I think, even with the significant contribution Tsu has made, we should certainly not name anything after him.

For now...

There isn’t really a tradition here of naming subforums after people, as much as specific instances in which that was done, so I’m not sure how applicable your example is to our situation. In fact, there is a very prominent example here in NationStates of people being recognised without having to be former players: Europeia. There they have a recognition called the Ovation, where a citizen with a certain level of contribution, after approval by their Senate, is honoured with a festival and a subforum is named after them.

On a more broader point, as much as I agree that Tsunamy has contributed a lot (and he knows I would never deny that), I’m saddened by this tendency to hold him as the sole example of someone who has contributed and should be recognised. He is not the only one who has given years and much effort to this region, and it is a shame that we don’t talk enough about this. There are so many people, both present and past, who have given a lot to the region. Just off the top of my head, and regardless of my opinion of their politics, I could easily make a strong case for the recognition of people like Escade, Belschaft, Glen, Farengeto, Fugetopia, Rebeltopia, HEM, Southern Bellz, Curlyhoward, Geomania, Drugged Monkeys, LadyRebels, etc.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that every single one of them should get a festival and a subforum. Eventually we’d run out of subforums to name. But it does mean we should know about them, and acknowledge more often that they too have given much to the region, which is not something that happens when, in a discussion about honouring multiple South Pacificans, we default to talking about honouring just Tsunamy.

I don't think anybody is saying he is the sole example, but Tsu is rather undeniably the flagship.

This brings me back to something I was taking about (with Escade, I think) the other day.

Our history is mostly passed down by word of mouth. A few years ago, we had proposed and even started a team under RA to begin going thru the old forums/NS forums/etc, and writing down a breef and/or elaborate history of the South Pacific. The people Kris mentioned should all get together before they retire/leave and all that great history knowledge is gone.

On the current issue, I'd suggest we start some kind of TSP Hall of Fame, and dedicate a forum area to that. We could hold an induction ceremony every June 2nd (Coalition Day), and start with 2 or 3 people a year to be added.

Agreed on a couple of points.  Tsu is awesome but not the only TSPer who's done quite a lot (although he does make a pretty face) and perhaps more people would be less ignorant about the many many contributions of the individuals mentioned if there were more acknowledgement. Then this is a game not the Oscars where you have to die to be recognized, especially since the average age of player means we'd have to wait like 70+ years.

Also love Rebels idea of trying it to Coalition Day and inducting 3 people yearly because there can be all sort of activities related to that. Finally, getting the history down! First join the MoRA server Tounge Maybe at least it can start or finally happen this year...
