Great blog post!

What are your favorite Advent tunes?

I'm pretty much fixated on 'O Come, O Come, Emmanuel'. I'm not overly familiar with many other Advent carols (at least, to remember them off the top of my head), mainly owing to my church history and the somewhat unusual approach to music at my current church...

Hey Seraph, if you don't mind me asking, how has your discernment process been going?

Very well, thank you. I'm currently about to begin examining chaplain interviews and have been practising my presentation for the Temporary Online Discernment Process.

I forget you have different components to BAP in England... Online must bring some strange dynamics to the process...

I'm pleased to hear it's going well. I had a long discernment process but so grateful for the growth and learning that was allowed to happen during it. And the learning never stops even once they have you collared.

I'll keep you in my prayers.

Yes and obviously they ate somewhat didn't this year anyway - BAP is replaced by two online interviews over three course of a day. There will be a secretary common to both and then a different advisor in each one. One is an hour and the other is an hour and fifteen minutes to allow for the presentation and discussion.

Before all that, though, I have three examining chaplain interviews over the next few weeks and then a meeting with the Bishop in the middle of March. And I need tty start working on my Theological reflection... I'm thinking of using my piece on pilgrimage in video games (above somewhere) as a starting point, including at least one of the psalms of ascent.

I've begun to read through your posts (see the link to the video bit not watched yet), I find what you've done here quite incredible, especially considering the strains that discernment can put upon you... As a non-stipendary/self-supporting I am conscious of the various communities I exercise my ministry amongst, I didn't come back with the idea of online communities being such spaces as well, but you have certainly encouraged me to reconsider what I may consider as my communities.

Going to admit I'm still getting used to preaching to a camera in an empty church... Preaching for me requires that personal touch, the ability to look at, interact with, the congregation... Then again I always protest I'm a luddite but considering I'm a secret geek, it's really not quite true... I suppose it took me along time to believe I should, let alone could, offer up my musings for public engagement that I'm very set in my ways, the familiar ones that make me feel comfortable...

Anyway I waffle...

I completely understand. We had a diocesan candidates' day via Zoom on Saturday in we we got to practice our presentations in breakout rooms. As a sort of warmup beforehand, we we asked to introduce ourselves and day what our biggest fear was about doing our presentations online. Mine remained the same regardless of medium - that I'd picked an awful topic (followed closely by a fear that I would dry up when it cane to the discussion afterwards and I'd discover I'd already said all I had on the topic) - but a majority seemed to fear that either their internet would fail, or that they would struggle because they couldn't get a sense of their audience reaction over Zoom, so you're very much not alone.

Personally, though, I find not being able to see my audience whilst I read my script to be quite liberating. XD

This might sound stupidly forward, and feel free to ignore (or point me to a previous answer I've missed) are you autistic?

I used to worry about not knowing the answer (to pretty much everything!) but to that I remember one of my selectors being over joyed when I said "I didn't know" as the start to an answer (I think it may have been around pastoral matters), and tbf I have found many matters where I am just signposting to someone more knowledgeable or better placed to deal with the practicalities.
The books they make you read (alongside the criteria for selection) all point to a particular type of skill set etc that a priest should have... It's all bull! Be the person God called you to be and it works out right.

On which note I better go do some work or it won't be alright!

Don't worry about it, I'm not autistic, that I know of, or, if I am, it's below any clinical level, but I'm not offended by the question. Indeed, I once took a proposed Autism Quotient test and that's exactly what it suggested: some signs of autism, but below clinical requirements, which I think actually covers rather a lot of people.

I'm not actually afraid to say I don't know, though, which is good. Indeed, during the discussion for one of the other presentations in my breakout room, I made a point about it being important to engage with a question, but not necessarily to have a clear answer to it. I think that's a lot of how we deal with pastoral/Theological questions in real life anyway. Sometimes it's more important to show an effort to answer or understand, even if we don't know, so long as we're honest about not knowing and that we're trying to grapple with it ourselves.

Funnily enough, I've noticed a tendency to be less certain about things over the last few years, even as my overall faith and closeness with God has increased.
