[DISCUSSION] Joke Campaigns
#1

The current Delegate election has seen two joke campaigns, which have been mentioned by other legislators as "unbecoming to the electoral process of the South Pacific" (@Awe). Seeing as though that while these campaigns are merely intended to be jokes (obviously), by law (as the candidates have stated that they wish to run) they will be posted in the ballot (@Rebeltopia).

Do you think we should outlaw joke campaigns? I understand the right of free speech, but when that free speech limits others' ability to express themselves (in this case, post credible campaigns for the betterment of the region), limits should be imposed. TL;DR I believe that we should outlaw joke campaigns.

I absolutely don't think we should outlaw joke campaigns.

I do think, however, we need to impress upon those that are doing joke campaigns to do it in such a way that they don't get onto the ballot, to work in good faith with the EC to make sure of it, and to mark their campaigns appropriately so that Legislators (particularly newer ones) that might not get the particular joke don't think that's a serious campaign.

As long as joke campaigns don't include a COI, they can't be included on the ballot. Neither Islands' or Gordon's campaign can be on the ballot this time round, at least. We could perhaps add a note of this to the nomination thread, making it clear that not all campaigns will make it to the ballot stage.

(Elections Act , Clause 2, Section 4: The campaign must prominently include a truthful declaration of all potential conflicts of interest the candidate may have within and outside of the South Pacific.)

The EC, I imagine, has the moderation powers to add [JOKE] to a campaign thread title if needed.

Some unruly legislators may put a Conflict of Interest on their campaign, technically making it legal. And I think a [JOKE] may not be enough moderation - I think that legislators must explicitly state that their campaign is just for fun for it to not be placed on the official ballot, and if they don't comply then it has to be taken down.

If you're filing a CoI, then it's no longer a joke campaign, isn't it?

Just dont post a joke CoI, and you should be good to go. Though, I'd like to see something done about calling out the legal validity of the campaign, even if it is adding [JOKE] or something similar to the subject.

Joke campaigns, while they are sometimes annoying, are always kind of nice to give us a good laugh.  Although the fake campaigner should definitely not be an option in the voting.

This works for me. But at the same time, I believe that Craziest already exists for people to post joke campaigns, and thus joke campaigns should be limited to that position only.

I think Joke Campaigns should only be done by the Craziest and that all other aspiring jokers should try to be elected as the craziest before posting a joke campaign in more serious positions.

Craziest only exists in Cabinet elections though, and this Delegate election doesn’t align.

Joke campaigns aren’t a new thing, and have never caused any problems in the past.
