How to write the news
Here on Treasure Island, we have a dedicated subforum for news threads where you can share with other roleplayers what is happening in your nation. There are several ways in which you can communicate that and this guide will help you understand how to use them to your own advantage. Writing news is not simply just words but may very well include the use of BBCode for aesthetic beauty. In this guide, you will be given the basic knowledge and tools to thoughtfully craft news headlines, articles, and even social media postings. After utilising these tools, you may find that you will want to fine-tune your work to your liking.
In this post:

Modes of communication
On Treasure Island, there are three main ways to put your nation's news out: - Flash News: a thread where roleplayers can post one-line headlines about the goings on of their nation.
- Stream: a thread where roleplayers can publish social media postings of their characters or organisations.
- Independent news threads: threads in which roleplayers can write full-length news articles about what is happening in their nation.
How to write
In the case of Flash News:
On Flash News, the goal is to keep your headline short and simple. At the most, the headline can be two-lines, but for the most part, one-line headlines are the way to go. Here are some examples:
(01-25-2016, 06:15 PM)Kris Kringle Wrote: President Walsh is embarking on a five-day national tour as his second and final term in office draws to a close. He is being succeeded by Vice President Todd Wilcox.
(08-30-2017, 03:17 PM)Qwert Wrote: Sedunn has offered Qvait emergency relief assistance, including personnel with experience from the disaster in Erinor.
(11-09-2018, 10:48 AM)Pax Dracon Wrote: The Empress and the Grand Minister of Pax Dracon have expressed their condolences to the family and constituents of the late President Detwiler.
In the case of Stream:
Stream is a fictional social networking service where you can post as if you are one of your characters or organisations. This social network is similar to the real-life Twitter and Facebook. Here are some examples:

Emil Palmann
President of the Republic of Transsuneria
KABB finding oil in Transsuneria is the beginning of a new era of prosperity for us. Although we will be eternally grateful for all the international aid we have received, we must stand on our own feet.
We understand the concerns people might have with moving forward with the drilling. For the foreseeable future, there are no ideal replacements for petroleum in the products we take for granted. When finished, our oil rigs will be the most modern and safe in the world. Our refineries will have the latest cutting-edge technology to ensure a minimal carbon footprint. Transsunerian petroleum products will from the very beginning be the smart choice and could make a positive impact on the climate, as well for the people of Transsuneria.

Kate Murphy
President of the Valkyrian Republic
I have just referred the Immigration Regulatory Act 2019 to the Constitutional Court. I want to make it abundantly clear that the rights and freedoms of all people in Valkyria should be respected, no matter what language is spoken or what religion is observed. I hope that the Constitutional Court agrees.

In the case of independent news threads:
When it comes to independent news threads, you will have complete control over how to put your nation's news out, whether that is in form of the previous two or even in a full-length article. When you create your own news thread, you get to decide whether to share that thread with others or leave it to yourself to post. When roleplayers create these threads for themselves, it is proper etiquette to not post in their threads unless explicitly allowed to. Here are some examples of news articles:
Kai Fa shipyards deliver two frigates to the Bruuman Navy
The two frigates docked in Tou Fou before beginning the journey to New Orleansburg
The Kai Fa’s state-owned military shipyards in Tou Fou have delivered two guided missile frigates to the Bruuman Navy, according to an official note. The ships left the port of Tou Fu at an undisclosed time in the previous month and recently docked in New Orleansburg, probably sailing along the South-Western route to Bruuma.
The two countries have begun trading military equipment right since signing the Treaty last year: among the goods going back and forth, Kai Fa is probably supplying much needed electronic and IT components while Bruuma provide artillery and other heavy equipment.
Kai Fa has boasted a long maritime tradition, both civil and military, since the era of the Southern Kingdom (1527 -1861), while Bruuma has suffered much from its lack of a proper blue water navy in all its recent engagements. The Voodoo-Marxist regime is also building two destroyers on its own in its bid to strengthen its naval warfare.
Some analysts believe that after the Serevan War the Bruuman generals are busy with a much more reorganization of their forces, hinting that the massive amount of weaponry the country recently poured on the markets, and the acquisitions of new, specific equipment, could mean it is emptying its stocks of the most dated pieces and acquiring modern ones as part of a renovation process.
Valkyrian politics | Who is running to succeed Margaret Harrison?
By Lyle Williams, KTN News
Wednesday, 14 August 2019
On 9 August 2019, Stella Kaufman welcomed the Centrist Democratic Party to the New Conservative Coalition, toppling Margaret Harrison's government and becoming the new Chancellor of the Valkyrian Republic on 12 August. Harrison, who had been the de facto Leader of the Labor Party since late 2015, announced that she would retire from politics, necessitating a leadership election within the party. While this is an opportunity for new and old faces to have their time in the spotlight, all of the candidates who have launched their leadership campaigns thus far have been staunch supporters of Harrison. In fact, all of the candidates have been in close proximity to the former chancellor in governments past and going as far back during her time as mayor of Darwin in 2005. One of the candidates is Harrison's younger sister, Melissa Ambrose.
Labor Party leadership candidates: - Avianna Aldridge, former Foreign Secretary (2016–2017) under Margaret Harrison
- Melissa Ambrose, former co-Queen of Valkyria (2016–2018) and younger sister of Margaret Harrison
- Julia Burns, former Vice President of Qvait (2016) and Defence Secretary (2016–2019) under Margaret Harrison
- Michael Mendez, former chief of staff (2005–2019) of Margaret Harrison
- Jonathon Murphy, former Veterans Affairs Secretary (2016) under Margaret Harrison
While Harrison made it clear that she will not endorse any candidate to succeed her, she did name Avianna Aldridge as the acting party leader due to the fact that she had led the MPs of the party when the chancellery was independent from the legislature between 2017 and 2019. Before the unification of Qvait and Winston Island, when Harrison was serving as President of Qvait, Julia Burns and Avianna Aldridge respectively served as Vice President and Secretary of State and they were called the "Big Three" due to the fact that the three women were the most powerful figures in the country at the time. Recent in-house polling on members of the Labor Party has shown that Aldridge and Burns are the two most likely candidates to become the Leader of the Labor Party and consequently become the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. However, Melissa Ambrose follows the two closely behind.
It is apparent that social democracy will continue to be the prevailing ideology of the Labor Party. In 2005, social liberals wrested control of the Labor Party from the social democrats and was the prevalent ideological force of the party for ten years until Harrison won the party's nomination for President of Qvait in 2015. Many of the social liberals who were in powerful positions within the Labor Party have since defected to the Liberal Party, whose leader Nathan Martinez is in a precarious position over his support for Harrison in the previous government. Due to the influx of former Labor Party members who had not supported Harrison, Martinez decided not to renew the Liberal Party's membership in the Alliance of Social Democrats after the 2019 general election and played a role in Harrison's ultimate defeat to Kaufman in the race to become Chancellor.
There are several issues that are important to the members of the Labor Party and are key for who will become the new Leader of the Labor Party. The party membership is critical of Kaufman's chancellery, viewing her negatively due to allowing Nicole Chancellor and The New Right to be a part of the new government. According to the in-house poll, 89 per cent of Labor Party members view the Coalition as authoritarian and 77 per cent want a party leader who will strongly challenge their policies. When it comes to ideology, 83 per cent of Labor Party respondents identify as social democrats and a total of 71 per cent said that it is important or very important for the next party leader to be a social democrat. As for experience, 58 per cent of Labor Party members want the party leader to have at least ten years of government experience.
The Labor MPs will hold several votes on 30 August to determine the final two candidates and the party membership will vote on 14 September to determine the next Leader of the Labor Party who will consequently become the Leader of the Opposition. Seven debates are planned to be held: three will be hosted by KTN, two will be jointly hosted by One Seven and The Sydney Times, and another two will be hosted by Central News.
INTERNATIONAL POLITICS | Peacekeeping mission in Transsuneria over

Grovne/Niulandsheim. In a joint statement this morning, the Transsunerian president Emil Palmann and the Sedunnic king Vimmru II declared that the international peacekeeping mission in Transsuneria is over. In 2014 an international coalition, with major contributions from Sedunn and Karnetvor, intervened in the Second Transsunerian Civil War to enforce peace between self-declared Grandmaster Soormann and his Forinsel-ethnic Purist Party and the Federationalists. Since 2018, Sedunn is the last nation with troops left. The plan was for Sedunn to keep peacekeeping troops in Transsuneria until the conclusion of 2022, now, three years early, the Sedunnic troops are handing over their tasks to the newly founded Self-Defence Forces of Transsuneria and the police.
According to the joint statement, the early withdrawal was enabled by "intensified training of domestic troops" and "successful economical and welfare reforms". Karel Jungmann, researcher at the Faculty for International Studies at University of Transsuneria, also believes that Sedunn needs to free its strategic resources tied to the peacekeeping operations, likely in preparations for an escalation of the Reizen Civil War.
"Sedunn has committed some its most mobile formations in this campaign. I believe they will be needed elsewhere now. However, there's some doubt that the newly formed Transsunerian units are up for the task."
Sedunn will not completely withdraw from Transsuneria. A permanent garrison has been established in Floodport, which is mainly tasked with naval logistics support and service to support the Sedunnic declaration of guarantee of independence of Transsuneria.
All nations that have been involved in the peace enforcing and -keeping operations in Transsuneria have been invited for a military parade and celebrations in the capital.

Learning how to use BBCode goes a long way, especially since it is the type of code used on NationStates. As you may have noticed, both Stream and independent news threads tend to use a complex series of code in order to put out an aesthetically pleasing product. In the case of Stream, the first post will provide you the preformatted code necessary to put out a post, but formatting independent news threads are mostly left to the individual roleplayer Should you create an independent news thread, you will have full control over formatting, but here are some formats for presentation:
Bruuma declares an environment-health emergency over invasive snails
Bruuma has declared an environment-health emergency over an invasive specie of snails. It is not clear how the pest enetered the county, but it spread for some times in the North-Eastern areas before the local authorities realize the invasion. Not only the creatures damage cultivations, but they are a vehicle for pathogens, including some dangerous to humans.
Among the countermeasures implemented, there is an old-fashioned one: squads of civilians and soldiers are being sent to the fields to collect all the invasive snails they can find.

In this news article, @ VPRB goes for a simplistic presentation of a news article by using bold, large-size font for a headline an image, and medium-size font for the body of the article.
International politics | Hystaiga must prepare for Valkyrian aggression, Starke says
By Deville Mikalai, The Karelia Chronicle
Monday, 28 October 2019
Karelia (The Karelia Chronicle) — On Monday, the Supreme Voice of Hystaiga said that "Valkyria is preparing to go to war with Hystaiga". In a speech before the Legislative Council of Hystaiga, Blisse Starke warned that "history was repeating itself" after Valkyrian Chancellor Stella Kaufman gave an address before the Valkyrian National Assembly in which she accused the Hystaigan government of shooting down a Valkyrian fighter jet on 14 October. The Supreme Voice denied the accusation and countered by saying that the Valkyrian government is using the incident as a "pretext for war". In response to the convening of the Valkyrian Defence Council, Starke has been named by the Legislative Council as the Chief Defender of the Realm, granting the Supreme Voice emergency powers over the Hystaigan Defence Force.

In this example, @ Jay Coop begins the news article with an image, then an XX-Large headline with a coloured tag, followed by the author, publication, and a date. The next step is using a justified alignment for the body, prefaced by a city and the publisher in bold font with the latter italicised. After the article, Jay centre aligns with a promotion of Stream and links to discuss the article.
Both of the formats as presented above are great to take advantage of as a new roleplayer and you can freely change it along the way as you progress in your knowledge of BBCode. However, you do not have to follow the example formats above and can start from scratch. You will find that you will be able to change the font, the size of the font, alignment, use colour, imagery, links, and various other forms of formatting in order to make something that pleases you aesthetically.
Getting help
This is a very basic guide, but there is much more to know about our roleplay section. Your very first option should be to post here, or visit our Discord server. We will be glad to answer any questions you might have. There are no stupid questions. If you still feel you need some guidance, you can send a private message to any of the following people, who actively roleplay here and are willing to answer all of your questions:
@ Qwert
@ Jay Coop
@ Hammerstar
If you have a question about a specific roleplay, you might want to ask the person who started the thread, or anyone who seems particularly active in that thread. If you have questions about the gameplay regional government or how to get involved in other aspects of our region, you can follow this link. If you have questions about the forum itself, you should head over to the Operations Center, where forum administrators can answer your question.
Have fun and see you out there!
