2019: A year in review
Issue XXV — Saturday, 21 December 2019

It has been a busy year in Pacifica with sporting events, political developments, and conflicts breaking out in the world. This year, Huawan and Valkyria respectively hosted World Cups for women's football and women's basketball. In political news, elections were held in several countries this year and some proved to be consequential. For the first time since 2014, there have been rumblings of another Great War breaking out soon between the nations of Pacifica, causing concern for many.

While there are sporting events scheduled for 2020, it appears that the new decade will not be starting on a high note. The Reizen Civil War that began in November 2018 continues to rage with no end in sight and the Valkyrians have started a war with Hystaiga, accusing them of committing state-sponsored acts of terrorism against the Valkyrian people. And with the region unstable enough, there was a coup in Ryccia. Unfortunately, the future looks increasingly bleak for Pacifica. Will a world leader rise to the occasion and help bring about peace in the region?

Oil found in Transsuneria

The Sedunn-based offshore drilling company KABB announced this morning that they have found considerable reservoirs of oil and natural gas in the Transsunerian exclusive economic zone. According to KABB, the reservoirs are of substantial economic interest but further drilling would be needed to determine the actual size of the reservoirs. KABB also said it would be a technical challenge to recover the oil due to the depth at which is was found and "geological irregularities".

Today, the Transsunerian economy relies heavily on the phosphate industry, which suffers from decreasing profitability. Foreign aid is still a major part of the state budget. If the oil can be recovered, it could provide an important boost to the post-civil war economy. Exclusive rights to the oil and gas fields have been granted to Sonne Petroleum, a joint venture between the Transsunerian state, local phosphate mining companies, KABB, and Sedunnic and Transsunerian private equity firms.

Operation Whaling Rush
Written by Isaki Kurenai on 6 July 2019 | Nation: The Imperial Frost Federation (@Imperial Frost Federation)

The Reizen Independence Movement exploited the chaos of the Bzerneleg–Frost Naval skirmishes to invade the island of Zett, home to the administrative capital of the province and the Reizen Democratic Coalition. The successful landing was an embarrassment to the imperial navy and the Bzerneleg Navy due to the ease with which the RIM landed on the island.

The assault spearheaded by the Zett Liberation Taskforce and comprised of several commandeered civilian fishing vessels that floated to the island in the dead of the night. The RIM successfully landed on the island with minimal resistance due to a decision to reinforce the northern coastline of the island, leaving the eastern coast vulnerable to invasions. The RIM then proceeded to conscript locals trapped between the Bzern-RDC and RIM lines, allowing the RIM to capitalize on the hesitation of the RDC to cleave a path towards Zero City aka “Zett city”.

Valkyrian election (part one): Kate Murphy wins presidency

On Sunday, the Valkyrian general election drew to a close and led to the election of Kate Murphy as the first President of the Valkyrian Republic. As for the chancellery, negotiations are underway to form a new government. Before a hometown audience in Darwin, Chancellor Margaret Harrison said that she will renegotiate for a new coalition agreement to form the Alliance of Social Democrats for another term. Across the river in Sydney, Conservative leader Stella Kaufman said she will pursue a three-party coalition with the Centrist Democratic Party and The New Right. If the projected results stand, it appears that Centrist Democratic leader Bradley Murphy will be the kingmaker. Harrison and Kaufman are the most likely candidates for chancellor. Because both candidates are women, commentators are calling the Centrist Democratic leader the "queenmaker".

The Centrist Democratic leader will be the one to decide whether Harrison or Kaufman will become the Chancellor of the Valkyrian Republic. As of Sunday, the Alliance of Social Democrats is certain to consist of the Labor Party, the Populists of the Left, and the Socialist Party, comprising 37.9 per cent of seats in Parliament. In order to retain their majority in Parliament, the Alliance of Social Democrats will need the support of the Centrist Democratic Party and either The Greens or the Liberal Party. On the right wing of Parliament is the New Conservative Coalition, which consists of the Conservative Party and The New Right, who comprise 42.9 per cent of seats in Parliament. In order to win a majority of seats in Parliament, the New Conservative Coalition will need the support of the Centrist Democratic Party.

Valkyrian election (part two): Kaufman decrowns Harrison as chancellor

On Friday, Conservative leader Stella Kaufman announced that a coalition agreement was reached with the Centrist Democratic Party and The New Right, allowing the New Conservative Coalition to become the governing bloc of Parliament. In doing so, Kaufman will become the second Chancellor of the Valkyrian Republic. In the aftermath of the July general election, it became apparent that Centrist Democratic leader Bradley Murphy was going to be the kingmaker—the person to determine who would serve as chancellor in the next term. After weeks of negotiation, Murphy announced that he will give Kaufman his party's support. Upon taking office, Kaufman will become the youngest chancellor in Valkyrian history at the age of 38 years, 1 month, and 9 days, breaking Margaret Harrison's record by one year and six months.

The 2019 New Conservative Coalition agreement, which was negotiated between the leaders of the Conservative Party, The New Right, and the Centrist Democratic Party, outlines the agenda of the coalition up to 2022, when the next election is supposed to occur. In the security-oriented agreement, the parties agreed to several major policy issues, which includes forming Kaufman's promised combined security agency within the Department of Home Affairs; fulfilling The New Right leader Nicole Chancellor's promise of a referendum on Valkyria's membership in the World Forum and giving her party control over internal security and trade; and giving the Centrist Democratic Party control over foreign policy, labour, and health policy. The agreement supersedes the 2017 Alliance of Social Democrats agreement, which featured a pro-World Forum stance and supported an expansion of public-sector services.

FiHami's "Night of Honor" or "Po o le Mamalu": An Outside Perspective
Source: Ha'Hani Times Post | Written on 25 September 2019 | Nation: FiHami (@phoenixofthesun14)

As the daily rainstorms begin to fizzle out and make way for hot, arid days, FiHami residents prepare to hold Po o le Mamalu, or "Night of Honor" Festivities. Because of FiHami's newness to the international scene, FiHami culture- and other Rainbow Islander cultures- are only recently being discovered. So, what is this "Night of Honor"?

Legends tell of the 1st wave of Rainbow Islanders arriving to the chain many many years ago. These islanders had yet to divide to the many islander groups that exist today. They allegedly arrived on an unknown island, and faced many difficulties throughout the harsh cyclonic season. Many lives had been lost to the storms and flooding and high winds. At the end of the season, some islanders chose to stay and brave the cyclones when they next would come. Others decided to find new lands that wouldn't be so harsh with cyclones. The land, in legends, was called Motu Aheia. However, before groups parted ways, they all held a feast where the many who died would be honored. It was said that, with their limited provisions, the native Rainbow Islanders shared food, drink, and dance. Islanders would repart flowers they found to their friends and families for one night, in reverence to the spirits of those who didn't survive.

This celebration retained its old Archaic name and went on to continue being celebrated at the end of every cyclonic season. In FiHami, the festivities were halted in the early 1900's when the Antarchi supremacy empire established itself. 2019 will be the first year the celebration will be publicly celebrated since the Antarchis.
