A Memory of Starlight [IC]
#31

Laki woke to the sound of fishermen returning from their early morning work. The sun was not yet quite over the horizon and the air was chill on his naked torso and damp clothing. He shivered and drew himself further from the water's edge.

There had been nowhere else to go and no one he could turn to and so, with all his money stolen, all his resources spent and all his energy drained, he had slept where he had hauled himself up out of the lagoon, on the stone beneath one of the wharves. It lay just out of the reach of high tide, but it was neither comfortable nor warm, nor was it clean. He had not been the first to use it as shelter and the remains of bottles and the detritus of drug use lay scattered about and abused. They made for poor bedfellows.

At first, he didn't want to move, despite the cold. The city lay just beyond his shelter and he wanted nothing to do with it. All that had happened the day before, from Au Tahuna's cryptic messages to being robbed at knife point and all the craziness intertwined with that, not to mention the tragedy that had brought him here - it was all too much. He longed for his village, for the steep underwater cliffs and the fields of purple shells in which he had spent his days. He knew that he couldn't go back to any of that now, but inertia seemed better than taking action. He could just let it all stop.

It was hunger that drew him out, just as the sun was rising. He saw one of the fish dropping nearby from an overfilled basket and, instinctively, he lunged for it, emerging from beneath the wharf like some monster of the deep to dive after the dead fish and haul it up victorious. It didn't matter that he had no means to cook it. Anything was better than starvation, apparently, even bearing the weight of the day.

But it was not to be. No sooner was he out of the water with his prize in his hand, than the crew of the boat from which the basket had just been unloaded were baying for his blood. They might've been clumsy with their catch, but they were certainly not willing to let anyone else enjoy it. He swam for the shore and clambered onto the cobbled street before they could reach him, then bolted up into the wretched maze of alleyways leading up the hill. Only when he was sure he could no longer hear them following did he find a corner in which to pick at his breakfast. He knew enough about seafood to know which bits could safely be eaten raw, but, unfortunately, that didn't amount to much and he was still hungry when he left the gutted remains behind to wander up the hill once more, the heat of the sun beginning to warm his back.

The Entity passively observed Laki from a distance, waiting once more for the opportunity to "guide" the human to its other quarry. Its first attempt had failed as the human narrowly escaped its grasp onto the main road, frustrating the entity as it lacked the means to observe those who approached Au Tahuna. The Entity observed the early morning's events unfold at the docks with some clumsy fishermen cursing the human for his resourcefulness and attempt to chase him ashore. It watched as the human clamber and run into the maze like alleys and grinned softly, moving to pursue the human as the crew docked their boat and tried to give chase.

It grinned as it jumped across the roof tops observing the fishermen try in vain to catch the human before they lost him in the confusing structure of the maze.
As it watched the fishermen return to their boat, the entity caught wind of Laki's scent and jumped down into the alley to follow it. The entity walked casually but quickly as it moved through the alleys to its prey and finally caught sight of the poor human with his back to the entity.

The entity's first instinct was to repeat its first attempt, but immediately decided against it as the entity remembered how badly that went and decided with a more subtle approach.

"Ho there, Are you alright?" it spoke, altering the tone of the thief's voice to be more friendly.

The Little one was lost. It had hoped to show off the falkismanne to the larger entity, but ultimately ended up returning and spending the night at the inn alone instead with the falkismanne occupying the spare bed. The little one rose up out of bed and watched the little bird humanoid still curious as to what it was and if it was edible, but decided against tasting it for fear the larger entity would scold it for being reckless. The little one's hunger grew until it finally got the best of her as it rose from bed. The curious nature of the little tempted it to take a taste of the the falkismanne, but the little one decided instead to leave the room and head downstairs leaving the falkismanne alone.  At the first floor of the inn, the little one silently gestured for breakfast doing her best to communicate what food and beverages it desired...

Who could have done this...

The visions of fire and burning once again filled Ember Rose's mind as she slept, visions of old aquaintences glaring at her and mocking her feathers through the flames occupied her mind. She was trapped once again, only waking up when the fire was just about to consume her entirely.

Ember Rose screeched, looking around at the unfamiliar place, with no recollection of previous events.

I need to find the temple and that weird artifact before it's too late. I have to save Eldur Ljos from those infernal beings...

She quickly jumped from the bed, launching herself from the nearby window into the sky, taking off only to crash-land just a few feet away. Ember Rose looked confusedly at her primary wings, giving a frustrated puff at the damaged flight feathers which prevented her from flying.

Slowly, some memories came back once more, and with a sigh, Ember Rose climbed up and went back into the room she woke up in, waiting for the Little One to return. When it finally returned, Ember Rose gave it an awkward smile.

"Hello, stranger... uh... do you have any idea where a certain temple could be? I'm looking for a thing. A magical thing." Ember Rose asked cautiously, tensing her body up to run if needed.
