MAJOR 18 June 2020
DEFENDERS CONTINUING TO SCORE AGAINST RAIDERS
Written by Omega

Few games are played at midnight. But in a tradition as old as the SPSF herself, the loyal sailors of TSP gathered in the moonlight to face their opponents in the annual “spring game.” The stands were always full as the announcer boomed “ladies and gentlemen, we! are! LIVVVVVVVVEEEEEE!” as the new recruits ran out with their new coach. It was an exciting time to be a fan of the sailors as a new coach with high expectations was coming into the program and two four-star recruits were about to get their first taste of the big stage. What a night it would be.

If their opponent showed up. They waited. They sat on the bench to see if they would come out of the tunnel. They walked out to a number of boos from the crowd as the entire defender conference had shown up to cheer on the new recruits.

The first drive was not ideal, but at least the raider of LKE could be held to a field goal. But then, the tide changed. The SPSF would drive down the field in seconds snatching victory out of the jaws of defeat. Raiders attempted to mount a comeback late in the first half and were quickly forced to fumble for a scoop and score by a new recruit.

Half time came and the brave men and women of the SPSF had run up the score so much, the raiders chose not to even show their faces and forfeit the rest of the game. An impromptu practice was held with some guest coaches from the RRA and TGW, some conference mates of the SPSF. After all, everyone knows in the Defender Conference it just means more, and we act like it. One of the new recruits broke his own personal record for the 40-yard chase and another started to figure out exactly what it is like to play under the major lights. Turns out, the raiders tried to show up after regulation had ended only to fumble on the snap and have the ball roll out the back of the endzone.

Needless to say, SPSF fans around the country are looking forward to the title run their new coach is about to start. When they bring home the trophy in four months, no one will be surprised.

PUPPY DEFENDING
Written by Phoenix

Mainland stops are a tenant for us.  We take the time to replenish our stocks on the ship, stretch our seafaring legs on shore, and take up small jobs and earn a bit of extra cash.  When we got the report that someone on the mainland accidentally let loose a bunch of puppies, we as the mighty protectors of the oceans of NationStates jumped on the case, fueled with motivation for puppy snuggles and extra pocket money.

However, we soon realized that we would be earning every dime on this mission.

The puppies were everywhere, chewing on things, running around, and leaving messes everywhere.  They ran up and down the streets, yapping loudly, exploring their newfound freedom frantically, paying no mind to sense and reason.  Thankfully, we had other friends helping us chase the loose puppies, who were extremely skilled in the art of puppy defending.

In all, 53 puppies were rounded up and returned to their owners, who allowed us to play with them the rest of the day until the sun set.  While we would love to play with puppies all day long, there are (easier) chasing targets like pirates and whalers who sail the high seas.

MAJOR: 27 JUNE 2020

Minister's Log
I'm still in shock about being voted in as Minister, I suppose.  I've done my best to help raise up the new recruits and teach them what it means to be a part of this fleet thus far, and they are so enthusiastic, I love their fiery spirit.  But, there is much work to be done. The seas have been relatively calm, not a single pirate ship in sight, or whalers, or any sort of trouble.  But, we need to be well prepared to strike should something arise.

The radio on the desk next to me made its distinctive beep-beep-beep sound, followed by the voice of a familiar ally from The Grey Wardens.

"Phoenix, are you there?"

"Lovely to hear from you, Haku."  I pressed the button on my communicator, replying casually.  I leaned a little further back in my seat, twirling my pen between my fiery fingers.

"We got wolves.  We could use a little help from the SPSF to corner them down."

"Lovely."  Was all I said, abandoning the humanoid form to fly out of the Captain's Quarters and round up any crew that was awake.  A young, enthusiastic recruit immediately reported to deck, saluting me with an eager expression.  I landed right on my perch, heart pounding with excitement.

"Good to see you, Swifty.  We've got wolves.  Go prepare yourself for a hunt of the ages."

Swifty took off for his quarters, leaving me to navigate us to our destination. I flew to the deck, re-assuming the humanoid form I held before, and quickly started the S.S. Llama Shade to the location where the wolves were last spotted.

It only took an hour to get to the location, from where Swifty and I disembarked, and met up with our friends in the Ten thousand Islands Treaty Organization, The Grey Wardens, and the Rejected Realms Army.  Haku stepped forward, gesturing in the direction of where a band of wolves were dashing along the coastline, fish in their jaws and a distinct glimmer in their eye, running with such chaotic, disheveled cadence in every paw step.

"Are... are they drunk?"  I asked, unable to hide the amusement from my voice.

"Seems so."  The other Warden nodded, loading his sniper.  "Let's move.  When they move, we shoot."

"Sounds good to me."  I grabbed the trident Swifty handed over to me, feeling its shiny metallic surface roar to life in my grasp.

The duality between the oceans and the volcanoes... could the wolves stand up against such power?

"THEY MOVED LET'S GO!"  Jamie shouted, taking off after the wolves.  Haku and Tim followed suit.

"Wait..."  I lifted my binoculars ahead to the target, suddenly realizing the target.  "They're going after Hector's Dolphins!"

I didn't need to worry, for the wolves' clumsy footing caused them to trip, revealing just how out of it they were.  With a laugh, I ran aboard the S.S. Llama Shade, followed by Swifty, and charged the ship forward despite the fact that the pod had swam away already.

"Careful, they seem to be going again..."  Haku whispered into the radio communicator.  He kept his rifle trained onto the lead wolf, preparing to take them down as soon as they next moved.

"Be careful of the dolphins.  They're highly endangered."  I replied, keeping my eye on the wolves.

The pack lurched forward again, going for another pod of dolphins.  This time they were a tad more coordinated, but Haku and Tim's quick firing saved the unsuspecting dolphin from the wolves.  I steered the S.S. Llama Shade a little ways ahead, blocking them off from the pods with the hull.  An expertly-thrown trident knocked the other wolves back further.  I smiled, watching Jamie wade through the shallower waters to grab my trident and toss it back to me.

"Thanks Jamie!"  I waved, ignoring the sting of the water droplets on my hand from the trident.

"There's more."  Haku suddenly motioned for everyone to follow him, dashing through the thick undergrowth.  I motioned for Swifty to follow everyone else back to land, and very quickly began the chase of our lives.

I allowed myself to be Phoenix once again, a fluid motion from running to being truly airborne, flying just behind the Wardens.  The wolves quickly came to sight, dragging with them the body of a dolphin, with the distinctive rounded fin on it's back.

"Careful where you shoot!"  I screeched loudly.  The wolves turned their heads to face our direction, sprinting off further.  Without warning, a muscular purple unicorn materialized out of thin air, charging ahead with Jamie on it's back.  Haku and Tim stopped, a sudden confused air surrounded the Wardens.  I crashed into the tree just up ahead, scrambling back up only to see Jamie and the unicorn trot back with the wolves skewered on the unicorn's horn.  In Jamie's arms was the dolphin, safe and sound.

"Good."  I relaxed, shifting again to the humanoid form to take the dolphin out of Jamie's arms, making my way back to the ocean.  I waded through the water until I could let the dolphin swim away, then flew back to shore.

"That's more dolphins saved today."  I proudly announced to everyone, walking back.

"Thanks for your help, everyone."  Haku set his rifle down by his side, the thrill of the chase leaving a weary smile on his face.

"Always happy to help."  I replied.  Swifty nodded his head happily, making his way back to the S.S. Llama Shade.  I followed suit, making my way back to the Captain's Quarters, settling back down into my chair.  I raised the glass of S.P.I.T. to my mouth and drank my fill, allowing the sweet liquid to relax me.  I picked up my pen once again and began writing.
Minister's Log
The wolves decided to try to go after the critically-endangered Hector's dolphin.  We successfully staved them off for now, but there will be more who may come along and attempt to poach these majestic marine creatures.  As always, it is our duty to protect these creatures, no matter the cost.  No matter who tries to capture them.
Signed,
Phoenix

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Prologue
By SwiftyGamer

It was a regular afternoon, just chasing Hawks around. That was, until out of nowhere Haku screamed at the top of his lungs:
“Code 101! I repeat, Code 101!”

As soon as we heard this, we all jumped into our nuclear submarines, and rushed to Haku’s location.

Upon our arrival, we found Haku kneeling on the ground, holding what seemed to be a small piece of broken metal. The metal had a slight blue tint to it and was extremely sharp. One side of it was chiseled into what seemed to be some sort of a spear the tip of which is made of gold. The metal was polished perfectly and was smooth like paper.

“Does anyone know what this is?”, I asked.

Phoenix walked over to Haku, bent down, picked up the small piece of metal and examined it.

“This is not good,” she said, “This small piece of metal, although it may seem very insignificant, is one of the most important discoveries in all of SPSF’s history. Around one week ago, while I was waiting for any activity, I was ambushed by a swarm of Hawks. I was forced to retreat, and in the process abandoned my trident. That Trident is the most precious item that SPSF owned, or did own until last week… It is made of a precious metal called Pacifium which can only be found in the caverns deep below the SPSF headquarters in Sandaoguo. Pacifium is the strongest metal in the World, and is practically unbreakable. Not only is this trident special because it is made with Pacifium, but when it comes into contact with water, it forms a magnetic shield around you and summons a swarm of guardian dolphins to protect you. And don’t worry, inside the shield, there is only air, preventing any water from extinguishing me. ”

We all stood in silence, waiting for someone to say something. That was when Jamie said:

“Well, what are we waiting for, let's go find these Hawks and get this Trident back!”

I pulled out my prototype Railgun, Phoenix transformed into her bird form and Jamie jumped onto his unicorn and we set off to hunt these hawks.

Promotion

In the halls of the SPSF HQ, there are many rooms.  Some are top secret rooms for only the most trusted members, some are more open to others.  One room holds a special significance, however.

This room is larger than the others, holding a much different atmosphere inside.  A sense of grandeur, pride, maybe even nostalgia lingers in the room, much different from the more streamlined feel of the rest of the building.

Minister Phoenix quietly flew up to the podium on the stage, shifting to the humanoid form, adjusting the headset microphone which appeared on her head.  Following after her, were Generals Nakari and Roavin.  Soon, Soldier SA and Trainee Prarie sat themselves on opposite sides of the stage, Prarie holding a certificate, and SA holding a brand-new uniform.  Soon after, everyone else in the SPSF filed in, filling the hall with eager warriors, excitetdly anticipating the ceremony about to commence.

Phoenix briefly looked across the room, the excitement on her face as obvious as the Intruder flag which General Roavin stubbornly continued to wear despite the joke being as old as time itself.

“Hello, my fellow friends.  Today, I have gathered us all here to acknowledge the dedication and hard work our dear Trainee SwiftyGamer has exhibited.  They have gone above and beyond in our shared mission of protecting the oceans of NationStates, chasing down the pirates with fierce determination to see them stopped.  This is why I ask Swifty to come up to the stage at this time.”

Swifty stood up from his seat and quietly made his way to the stage.  The sheer amount of pride he held at this moment radiated like another sun in the very room, confidence in every step echoing around the hall.

“Trainee SwiftyGamer.”  Phoenix said, turning to face the bold Trainee.  “You have proven yourself to be more than capable in battle, a valuable asset to our crew.”

Swifty nodded, the smile on his face growing larger with every passing second.

“Do you promise to continue on this path that you’re on, vowing to do all that you can to defend the rough seas against those who wish to harm her, as she will be your friend as you are hers?”

“I promise.”  Swifty replied to the question.

“In that case…”  Phoenix lingered on the last word, reaching for what seemed to be nothing by her side.  The brief moment of realization on her face passed by her unnoticed, and she moved her hand down to clasp the hilt of her katana instead.  She drew the sword, resting it on Swifty’s head.  “By the power vested in me by the people of The South Pacific, I now henceforth declare you, Soldier SwiftyGamer.”

The hall erupted in wild cheers and applause.  SA stepped up first with the new uniform, followed by Prarie with Swifty’s certificate.  The Generals stepped forward, shaking the new soldier’s hands enthusiastically.

“FREE S.P.I.T. ON THE HOUSE!!!”  Trainee Omega shouted, passing around glass after glass of South Pacific Iced Tea to everyone in the room.

Chasing Lilies: Major 2020-07-07

Phoenix had set sail alone in the middle of the night, after reports of mysterious flower traffickers came through, from contacts in The Grey Wardens and the Rejected Realms Army.  She was grateful that the seas were calm as they were, to prevent more ocean spray from hitting her.  Without the Trident, her job was about to become much, much harder.

“Alright, hurry up and get here, and prepare to go as fast as you can.”  Haku said over the radio.  Phoenix quickly shifted into her normal bird form after anchoring the ship to where it was, soaring quickly to the land where she met the rest of the group.

“Phoenix, go with Jamie and Matthew and hunt down that group.  The rest of you, go after the other group.”  Haku nodded when Phoenix arrived, and the chase began.

They kept up a wild pace, chasing the wild flower traffickers on land, picking up the lilies as they fell.

“They’re moving too fast.”  Matthew dropped, panting heavily.

“We can do it.  We just need to keep going.”  Jamie said, looking down at Matthew and Phoenix from their high unicorn.  “They can’t go forever now.”

“Jamie’s right.”  Phoenix acknowledged, dragging Matthew back up to his feet.  “Keep moving.”

And the chase continued for the entire update, recovering 140 illegal flowers in total.

“Hey, look at that…”  The most adorable smol Catgirl Sweeze, the notorious leader of the fun-loving drug-pedalling org Lily pointed out over the coast.  Everyone in the room dropped their glasses of S.P.I.T. and looked just over the horizon with drunken anticipation.

“What is it, fren?”  Phoenix asked, gingerly standing up.

“That Captain Lard fella left his dumpster unattended.”  Sweeze smiled, an evil look spreading across her face.  Others perked up, turning their attention on the adorable Catgirl commander.

“We’re so in.”  The newly-appointed First Warden of the Grey Wardens jumped up from his table, drawing out his rifles with excitement.

Phoenix turned to face General Nakari with a nod, which was only returned with enthusiasm.

“Let’s start a dumpster fire!”

“Alright, on my signal, let’s charge in.”  Sweeze whispered, holding up her closed fist.  Phoenix discreetly morphed into her normal form, coming to rest her transformed talons on General Nakari’s shoulder.  Everyone else seemed to tense up, the hunger for utu very apparent on their faces.

“Wait… is that a… dumpster… on the open ocean???”  Phoenix exclaimed, glaring at the floating pile of trash.

“Exactly.  And we’re going to take it all and go to town on Lardyboy’s house.”  Sweeze snickered.

A silence fell on everyone as they readied themselves for Operation Fashie Meltdown.

“Go.”  The adorable Catgirl exclaimed, rapidly sailing their way to the old, rotting pile of trash free-floating in the ocean.  And, with expertly-executed flicks of her wrist, trash ended up piling around the as-of-yet vacant house.  Others very quickly followed, chucking piles of trash at the house.

In mere seconds, the pile in the ocean was now entirely covering the Lard’s home.

“Honestly, looks much better than it did.”  One of the mercenaries, Bluie, chuckled as he chucked the last of the trash over.

“Well, why don’t we go get a drink eh?”  Phoenix squawked with enthusiasm.  Frenchy made his way over to the window, bashing the window open with the patio table that had been sitting there, surrounded by army green patio chairs, and entered the house, alarms blaring.  He casually strode over to where the table landed, grabbed it by the legs, and yeeted it into the door.

“Come on in guys!”  Frenchy called out, watching everyone destroy their way in.

Everyone quickly got to work “redecorating” Captain Lard’s home, Sweeze throwing paint everywhere, the furniture team throwing everything to a corner to be incinerated in Phoenix’ fire, and bringing in a few posters on top of the wall.  Once they were done, everyone else vacated the house, leaving Phoenix to do her thing: BURN IT ALL DOWN!

Let this be a lesson to those who try to facilitate hatred and disgusting ideologies across the world.

Operation Save the Sea Turtles!  Minor 2020-07-18

Tired, exhausted mariners always made their way to the bars in sleepy coastal towns at the end of the day.  This unspoken tradition was never broken, unless you wanted to awaken the Ocean, and she is certainly not a very happy camper when awoken.

The small, fiery bird was a common sight in this town by now, and the local villagers always left the bird a gift of the finest mangoes their vast orchards produced whenever she came to visit.  On the weekend nights, the local bar would become lively, with plenty of glasses of S.P.I.T. going around, and even a song or two, if the bird was feeling especially lively.

This was one of those nights, where Phoenix and the villagers of the town were having their fun at the local tavern, when in steps a very well-dressed man, his boots making a loud click-clack across the wooden floor.  He put away the sword he held into its sheath, grabbing a few gold coins from his pocket and tossing them to the barkeeper.  The room seemed to fall into an uneasy quiet, as all eyes suddenly went to the strange man.

“Oh my gosh, Rom!”  Phoenix chirped, shifting to the humanoid form and jumping over tables to approach the privateer.  “It’s good to see you!”

“Likewise, Phoenix.  How have you been?”  Rom crossed his arms, unable to stop a smile from spreading on his face.  The room seemed to relax a bit when the people realized that the bird and the stranger were friends, resuming their previous chatter, soon becoming unaware of the mariners in the room.

“The Hawks stole the trident from me.”  Phoenix sighed, slipping her hand into her pocket and drawing out the shard that was found two weeks ago.  “I was ambushed, I tried my best to fight them off.”

“Sorry to hear that.”

“Well, it is rather unfortunate, but I will do whatever it takes to recover it.”  Phoenix turned her head to face the door, the sight of a tiny baby sea turtle making its way inside the tavern catching her eye.

“What’s-”  Rom watched Phoenix swoop down and gently pick up the little turtle before someone could step on it.  “... a turtle…?”

“Yeah, it is about the time of year sea turtles hatch and begin making their way to the sea.  However, bright lights often confuse the little fellas, like this one.”  Phoenix dashed out of the tavern, watching her every step until she reached the shore.  She lowered her hands right up to the ocean’s edge, watching the tiny turtle shuffle its way into the water and disappear.

“The state of this beach is an eyesore.”  Rom walked up to where Phoenix kneeled, carrying a large mug of specially-imported rum.
“It’s bad for the turtles, too.  If they were to try to eat all the garbage that’s here.”

Rom snapped his attention to the sudden sound of a horse snorting in the distance, only to wave over to the man riding the unicorn along the beach.

“Fratt?  Hello there!”

“Oh, it’s the messy pirate.”  The man on the unicorn chuckled, sliding off the unicorn and approaching the pair.  “And the tiny fire birb!”

“Good to see you, Fratt.”  Phoenix smiled, standing up to greet the newcomer.

“This beach is a disaster.  This is clearly the work of you two pirates, throwing parties everywhere.”  Fratt surveyed the trash on the beach, equally amused and disappointed.

“You said it’s the sea turtle’s hatching season, right?”  Rom asked, picking up a wrapper from the sand.  “We should clean this beach up.  Help the sea turtles go in the right direction.”

“You read my mind!”  Phoenix exclaimed.

“Ooh, lemme give Atlae a call, see if they want to get in on this.”  Rom pulled out a smartphone, dialing a number rapidly on the phone, only to be beaten by Phoenix on her own phone.

“Heyo Atlae!”  She chirped enthusiastically.  “Wanna come help us clean up this beach?  I’ll send you the directions if you want!”

“Count us in!”  The voice on the other line responded, and very quickly came a dark green van, which came to a stop where the pavement ended, and out came a few guys, donning their tech like badges of pride.  Atlae walked up to the group first, with a gentle wave of his hand and a disgusted side-eye towards a clump of trash.

“Well, we better clean this up.”  Atlae kneeled down to pick up a tiny baby sea turtle that was trying to eat a plastic bottle cap.  “And soon.”

“Everyone, call in your forces, let’s clean this shore up!  We’ll split into teams, the more the merrier.”  Phoenix said, grabbing the conch shell and sounding it loudly.  Rom called his crew over with a sharp whistle, while Fratt mounted his unicorn, commanding the creature to rear up.  Pretty soon, the beach was filled with plenty of recruits.

“Sun’s coming up guys, put on sunscreen.”  Phoenix ordered, passing around a large bottle of sunscreen.  “This stuff is reef safe by the way, so we don’t harm the oceans more.  No Oxybenzone that kills corals.

And very quickly, everyone got to work, picking up trash and throwing it away in the daytime, and making sure sea turtles made it into the ocean rather than into trouble.

Brewing Storm: Major 2020-07-25

The beach clean-up operation a massive success, Nakari, Phoenix, South Asians, Heaveria, and Swifty sailed back to the main harbor, where the SPSF headquarters stood proud, along with the other government buildings in The South Pacific.  The city itself was bustling, the heart of the region being there.  Many people gathered at the shipyards to watch the SPSF fleets arrive, cheering proudly as they watched everyone onboard disembark.

The weather was sunny and warm as usual, as Phoenix stepped off the ship, looking around at the pristine oceans, abundant with sea life.

“I am going to go see if I can figure anything out about the trident.”  Swifty stated, holding out his hand expectantly.  “I’ll need that shard from you.”

“Oh, sure.”  Phoenix nodded, dropping the trident fragment into the soldier’s hand.  Swifty swiftly made his way away from the harbor, off to the SPSF headquarters.

“I am going to check up on other things.  If you need me, give me a call.”  Nakari explained, walking off to the government buildings in the distance.

“We’ll be around if you need us.”  South Asians and Heaveria stated in unison, each going their own separate ways, proud purpose in their steps.

Phoenix lingered just a little longer to stare into the waters proudly, hearing the lapping waves call to her more.  However, she was wise enough to realize that responding to the ocean’s call without the trident was a bad idea.  Instead, she decided to make her way to the Lampshade Bar and Grill, staring out into the ocean as she ate a sandwich, watching the dolphins jump as the sun started to set.  However, the looming clouds over the horizon became more and more apparent, as if it was building up in intensity.

To her surprise, The First Warden from The Grey Wardens showed up right next to Phoenix, snapping her out of her own admiration of the beauty of the ocean.

“Looks like a storm is brewing.”  He said, the thrill he felt invading his serious demeanor.

“It’ll be a good idea to see what’s up.”  General Roavin approached the table, staring out at the growing storm.

“Agreed.”  Phoenix jumped up, flinging a bunch of drama llamas at the poor bartender and snatching a bottle of S.P.I.T. from the fridge as she left the Lampshade Bar and Grill, following Tim and Roavin out.

“Your… change… ma’am…”

“You don’t have the trident on you, put on a rain cloak.”  Roavin tossed a large plastic cloak to Phoenix, who slipped it on with a single move, and with another fluid movement, leaped aboard the ship.  She lowered the plank so the talented general could board, and once Roavin was on, raised the plank once again, raised the anchor, and off they went, into the heart of the storm.

The Grey Wardens charged forward with their friends from Lily, followed closely by the unicorn-riding powerhouse that is the Rejected Realms Army.  And looming in the background, was the sheer manpower of the Ten thousand Island Treaty Organization, ready to support whatever storm they would face.

The winds picked up quickly, and the waves proved more and more difficult to navigate.  Even shouting to each other for directions proved to be useless above the howling winds, and the sudden torrent of rain stinging with the sheer force alone, creating loud hissing noises as they hit Phoenix’s exposed humanoid skin.

“OVER THERE!”  Haku shouted at the top of his lungs, gesturing wildly over the distance, to where a group of whalers sat, seemingly fighting a kraken.  But, as they approached closer, it was clear that the kraken was working with the whalers, creating its storm to mask the whaler’s movements.  But, it was too late for whatever the whalers were up to.

Everyone quickly moved into position to take on the whalers and the kraken, flanking the enemy ship on all sides, hidden by the high waves and the torrential downpour.

Roavin tossed a large harpoon to Phoenix, grabbing the other one for himself as he carefully aimed at the enemy ship.  Phoenix did the same, doing her best to keep as much of herself under the cloak as possible despite the winds, the rain, and the crashing waves.

All of the sudden, the whalers shot their harpoons into the water.  And within a few seconds, the defenders stormed aboard the whaler’s ship, the TITO fleet taking the blunt of the whaler’s harpoon, allowing the Sei whale pod to escape safely into the depths.

The skirmish was brief, but the whalers suffered a few losses to their crew before they could beat the defenders back.  And once again, the chase was on, but the rest of the night was uneventful, and they went back home by the end.

The storm subsided, leaving behind a myriad of stars glittering in the night sky, signalling to everyone that it was time to go home.

“Everyone go to the Lampshade Bar and Grill on Government Island, S.P.I.T. is on me!”  Phoenix shouted, turning the ship around back to the harbor.

Christmas in July- Minor 2020-07-26

“We have a code red.  Alert, code red.  Christmas has been taken over.”  The voice sounded urgent, pleading, even.

“Copy.”  The person pressed a small button on the desk, speaking into a microphone, then released the button, standing up from the desk and swiftly leaving the dark room.

Above deck was where the rest of the SPSF were, all congregated together, engaged in passionate discussion over glasses of South Pacific Iced Tea, as usual.  The past week had been rather eventful, and it did seem that everyone was eager to get some rest.

Everything quieted down once the doors from below deck swung open, and Phoenix emerged.

“If any of you are able to be around, please report to the S.S. Llama Shade.”  Was all she said, transforming to the phoenix and taking off to the ship next door.

On the Llama Shade, Generals Roavin and Nakari stood, their expressions serious.  Soldier South Asians appeared shortly after.

“We’re going to charge for Christmas,” began Roavin as Nakari made the way to the Defender’s Artificial Solar System.

“Let me call over a few friends.”  South Asians grinned, phoning in a few people from FNDA.

At the A.S.S., a great horde of people gathered around, watching the northern seas like a hawk.

Christmas Battle Theme

“We’ll be up in just a few.  We’ll move when I call go.”  Haku stepped forward in front of the crowd.  “The game plan is as follows.  Rejected Realms Army, swing into the back.  TITO, you guys do what you guys do.  South Pacific Special Forces, sail in and break your way as close to the center as you can.  Everyone else, follow me.  Now, get into position.”

Everyone filed into their respective points, watching the RRA ride off to the opposite coast.  Everything was deadly quiet, as Nakari prepared to take the Llama Shade into a gear she had never revved in before.  Everyone else was tense, just waiting for Haku’s signal to take Christmas by storm.

All of the sudden, the sound of horses neighing in the distance erupted, and Haku called a loud “GO!!!” and suddenly, defenders from far and wide swarmed in, and the fight was on.

The S.S. Llama Shade suddenly lurched forward, its driver expertly charging through the ice, breaking it up and getting the vessel as close to shore as possible.  There were a few defenders already on shore, guarding the rightful ruler of the lands from further attacks by the invading forces, who were busy trying to ward off the RRA cavalry and the sudden mass barrage of defenders.

“Harpoon that group!”  Roavin shouted, tossing several candy-cane painted harpoons to Nakari and South Asians.

“What are…”  South Asians hesitated for a second in confusion, jumping in surprise when the generals both launched their harpoons simultaneously, ensnaring a few invaders with the candy cane hooks.

“Had to get into the spirit, ya know?”  Roavin chuckled, firing yet another candy cane at another straggling invader.  South Asians shrugged, assuming the firing position as well, launching a candy cane at the last straggling invader.

Just as quickly as it started, it was over.  The defenders gathered up the invaders and kept them trapped there while the rest who were there cleaned up the mess and restored the king to his throne.

“We did it.”  Haku blew the smoke off his rifle, suddenly jumping when he noticed it had been painted over in red and white.

“Ha!  I was waiting for you to notice!”  Roavin laughed.  “Had to get us into the Christmas spirit somehow.”

Once the last of the invaders were on their one-way ticket to The Rejected Realms, everyone decided to head home.  Aboard the S.S. Llama Shade, Phoenix applauded the generals and the soldier, handing them hearty gallons of S.P.I.T. to the returning fighters.

“Nice one guys!”

“I get the feeling we won’t be seeing the last of them yet.”  Roavin shook his head.

“The flurry in activity isn’t too much to worry about.  But the trident is still at large, and fragmented.”

“Speaking of…”  Phoenix held up her hand, revealing a small shattered metallic fragment.  “I found this.”

The S.S. Llama Shade sailed back to Government Island’s harbor, coming to stop at the docks, and everyone went back home, to keep their eye for the next thing.

Islands- Major 2020-08-01

“We’ve got reports that some hawks are up.  No idea their intention.”  The ever-familiar voice of The Grey Wardens’ very own Haku came over the radio.

“On our way.”  General Nakari responded, looking around the command room.  She grabbed the half-asleep Phoenix and the fully-asleep Roavin, and made her way as quickly as possible to the S.S. Llama Shade, throwing her now-awake companions aboard before sailing off herself to the coordinates set by the Warden commander.

“What’s up?”  Phoenix looked over the coast once she regained her footing, seeing the all-too-familiar ships over the horizon.  She slowly smiled, reaching for her back for a weapon that wasn’t there.  At the realization, she drew out twin flaming katanas instead.  “Black Hawks.”

“Yes.  We’re joining the Wardens and the Rejected Realms Army on this.”

“Oh, this is gonna be good.”

Nakari nodded, steering the ship to the Artificial Solar System.  Everyone watched as the Wardens and the RRA cavalry climbed aboard.  As soon as the whole group was aboard, Nakari sailed off towards the distance, keeping the Hawk fleet in plain view.

“They’re live!  Over there!”  Vinny shouted, pointing in the distance to where hawks were aiming for an island.  Nakari quickly redirected the S.S. Llama Shade’s route to the island, quickly overtaking the hawks and beating them to the island.  Of course, the hawks merely redirected their course to another island.  Which the crew intercepted as well.

Finally, the hawks managed to claim an island.  But there wasn’t enough time to even think about cleaning it up, for they were already targeting another island.

The islands the Black Hawks managed to claim were few and far between.  Aboard the last one, the defenders managed to storm the Black Hawk’s vessel, rounding them up and sailing them off to The Rejected Realms.

“Trident shard.”  Deadeye Jack held up a sliver of shiny Pacifium metal, handing it over to Phoenix.

“Beautiful, thanks!”  Phoenix smiled, stuffing the little piece of metal into her pocket.  “Three shards found now.  Many, many more to go.”

Note, this obviously is very, very late.  Sorry that our report is so late, we’ll be right back with our regularly-scheduled content with the next report.  As such, this report will cover everything we’ve done since the South Pacific liberation.  And, a huge special thanks to Swifty Imperial Dodo for helping out getting this report done!  Now, without further ado, the report.

Determination (SP Liberation pt. 2)

We have been grappling with defeat at every corner.  The mere power of the trident shards alone have given them enough power to do this.  I had just been scratching the surface this entire time I had possession of the trident, but they are unleashing a dangerous force unknown to mankind.  If they manage to find more of the shards… I fear what will happen.

Phoenix closed the journal once again, looking over at the clock on the walls.  The past few days have been impossible, at every corner, there was a new surprise that caused the casualties of many of the civilians that joined forces with the liberators.  With a sigh, Phoenix stood up, pushing her chair in, and quietly made her way out of the room.

“There has to be a way…”

Phoenix shuffled into the quiet cafeteria, sneaking over and grabbing a mango, which she nibbled on her way to the secret command room, looking over the various things discussed.  After a while, she shook her head and left the room, walking out to see everyone else walking out of the building.  Everyone at this point looked unmotivated, having experienced defeat at every turn up until now.

“Look.  We might be struggling, but we WILL pull through!”  One of the brilliant higher-ups of the Rejected Realms Army, Jamie, shouted.  Their voice was confident, brimming with determination, as the unicorn they rode paced up and down in front of the combined forces.  “We CAN do this!”

“You all can do this!!!”  The head of The East Pacific, Serge, cheered on, though he could not enter battle.  Just in front of him was the Field Commander of the East Pacific Sovereign Army, who was walking the civilians they had left through what needed to happen.

“I suppose it is time for our final stand.”  Phoenix drew her swords and marched to the front.

“READY.”  Phoenix shouted.

The combined armies fell quiet, no longer the massive 90 brave warriors, but a third of that.  Many more of the civilians at home would mourn their losses, but now wasn’t the time for that.

“AIM.”

It seemed like the Hawks were just about done with their party, but enough were left to bite back against the defenders.  They seemed ready to give it one last fight, having had their victory and ready for the next thing.

“FIRE!!!”  Phoenix shouted, as the swarm of people from all over charged in.  The Privateers of the North Pacific Army skillfully sliced through some of the remaining Hawks.  The Rejected Realms Army rode in, invoking their wrath upon any remaining Hawks.  The South Pacific Special Forces rode in by storm, charging in, firing harpoons at any nearby hawks.

The rightful King of the island ran alongside the liberators, tearing through hawks with powerful leaps into the ear, grabbing them with his powerful jaws, and throwing them off the island ferociously.  Not a single hawk dared touch him.  Instead, they flew away, leaving the throne empty for the Panther to casually walk up, which he took with stride.

“And stay out.”  He growled.  The remaining liberators approached Panther and the natives from South Pacific with a triumph in their eyes, which he smiled in return, as he was king over his realm once again.

Not many words were exchanged, though everyone helped clean up the mess as best as they could.  When clean-up was complete, the South Pacific Special Forces and the remaining South Pacificans walked off the island and into their vessel, ready to set course for home.

“Let’s go home.  We’re not out of this quite yet.”  Roavin turned towards the front of the ship.  Nakari nodded, making her way over to guide the ship back home.  Phoenix passed SPIT all around to those who had attended, sharing stories with everyone aboard.

I just want to say, from the bottom of my heart, to everyone that participated, THANK YOU.  THANK YOU for coming out to help our friends, even if it did mean losing your endorsements.  Thank you for supporting our efforts and making history, even if we may not have “won” because of our numbers.  The fact that every single person came out with the intention to help meant so much more to us, that, if there are any big, high-stakes missions, that we can count on you to help us liberate regions from the claws of the raiders that seek to destroy.

And a massive thank you to the different regions that came to help, especially The East Pacific, you guys helped so much with the Civilian Militia, with how many people you managed to pull for this and your intense recruitment efforts.  Thank you so much.

Sincerely,
Minister of Military Affairs of The South Pacific,

FiHami

Middle of the Earth

“That way.”

Sailing away from South Pacific, everyone made their way to the next region that had been taken over by the wolves.  Along the way, they picked up a few new recruits permanently, and the ship was busy rejoicing in their recent victory.  At the helm were the two generals of the South Pacific Special Forces, who were quickly steering the ships towards the target.

“Hey, back there at South Pacific, I found this thing, it looked important, some hawks dropped it.”  One of the new recruits said, holding up a small shard of metal.  Phoenix stood up and approached them, looking at what they held in their hands.

“That’s gotta be another shard.”  Phoenix smiled, stretching her hand out for the trainee to drop the shard into her hand.

“A shard…?”  The recruit asked confused.

“Basically, this little shard was part of a trident that was passed down from Minister to Minister of our region’s military.   It is very powerful, as you saw from what the hawks did in South Pacific.  All that trouble, caused by them having managed to grab a few shards.”

“Wait, where’s the trident now-”  The recruit was about to ask, until they were cut off by a command from the helm.

“Let’s go!  Target acquired!”

Everyone aboard armed themselves up for yet another liberation, when suddenly, another shout pierced the air.

“GET OFF THE DECK NOW!  INSIDE!”

Had the warning come a few seconds later, many SPSF members would have been lost, as everyone made it into the inner workings of the ship just in time for the oceans to open up, everything falling for what seemed like an eternity, until suddenly, everything stopped.

Roavin stepped out of the cabin carefully, to survey what had happened.  He came back to the cabin, somewhat relaxed, even excited a little bit.

“Well, we somehow took a shortcut to the target it seems, because we are in Middle Earth.”

“What do you mean we’re in Middle Earth…?”

Everyone emerged from the shelter of the lower levels of the ship to the deck, to find that they’ve been dropped into the middle of an ocean just looking out to what seemed to be a fantastic land only imagined.

“Well, let’s go.  We need to find the invaders-”  Phoenix started to say, only to be interrupted by Nakari pointing over to the shore.

“Wolves.  They’re patrolling the shores, but we should be able to slip in.”

“How are-”  Phoenix was about to ask, when suddenly, the skies opened up, dropping many other defenders down from the skies into the ship.  After a bit of a meet and greet, everyone focused their attention on timing the wolf patrols.

At the signal from commanders, the large group dropped down from the ship into smaller boats, rowing to the shores, avoiding detection from the patrols of wolves.

“Hey, Phoenix.  Go fly ahead and see if you can find anything.  Try to stay undetected.”  Haku whispered, and Phoenix quickly transformed, flying to the trees as quietly and secretly as possible.

“Everyone else, let’s stay here and wait.  When the bird returns, we’ll see what our options are.”

They sat there, hiding themselves the best they could in the dense foliage, holding their breaths when the wolves got too close to comfort, and relaxing once again when they left.  However, their situation was short-lived when the unmistakable screech was heard.

That’s when the wolves found the group in the dense foliage.

The initial skirmish was rather short-lived, as the more experienced defenders made quick work of the small patrol.

“No use for stealth now, no doubt they know we’re here.  Let’s go now, as quickly as possible.”  Haku sighed, motioning for the defenders to go and run through the forests as quickly as possible.

The group made it to the volcano where they saw the ruler of the wolves laugh, holding hostage the residents of the surrounding town as their attendants.  In a small birdcage was Phoenix, wrapped in what seemed to be flameproof material, lying on the ground motionless.  The leader stepped down from his throne, a smirk on his wolfy face and an undeniable glint of pride in his face.

“So, you lot all finally decided to descend from your crushing defeat to come to challenge me?”  He growled, licking his snout.  “I have your fire chicken, and now I have a wider buffet of defenders to snack on.”

Frattastan walked up to the large wolf with annoyance, picking him up from the scruff of the neck, chucking the wolf into the volcano, taking the birdcage with him as the wolf thrashed, trying to avoid his inevitable demise.

“Ah, we lost-”  One of the SPSF newer recruits cried out, interrupted by Nakari with a smug look on her face as the recruit went from panic to astonishment as Phoenix flew out of the volcano as if nothing had happened.

“She’s a phoenix.”

Phoenix landed on the ground next to the group, transforming back to the human form.

“Thanks, did we win?”  She smiled, shaking off random down feathers from her sleeves.

“Fratt literally just grabbed the wolf like it was a kitten.  It was great to watch.”  Swifty laughed, mimicking the action of grabbing the wolf by his neck and tossing him like a toy.

“I wish I could have seen that.  We should go home though… wait, do we have a way home?”

A hush fell across the defenders as they realized that they were trapped in the unfamiliar land.

Some Perfect Timing
Written by Swifty (Imperial Dodo)

It was a sunny, summer day. The sky was as clear as it could be and all was well. It had now been almost 2 weeks since the liberations of South Pacific and Middle Earth. Minister Phoenix was sitting in her office, reading a book and munching on a mango. I was slumping in my chair trying to get a little sleep after having updated the entire SPSF Headquarters Security System last night. There had been no sightings of any of the hawks or any of the other trident fragments. I was sitting in my chair, half asleep when my computer started beeping. I spun around, and saw that there were 2 unidentified objects approaching the outer rim of Asia. I jumped out of my seat, took my computer and walked over to Minister Phoenix’s office:

“Phoenix, 2 unidentified objects appeared on my radar approaching Asia.”

“It’s fine, probably just some wolves doing some shenanigans, just noti-”

She was interrupted when my computer started beeping like crazy and over 25 more unknown objects appeared on radar. They were forming up in a coordinated swarm, seemingly preparing to attack.

“Notify Haku, Jamie and our friends at UDSAF and let's get moving!”

I grabbed my computer, ran back to my office, called Merlin and Jamie and told them where to meet us.

“Cmon, hurry Swifty.  We’re gonna miss them”, screamed Phoenix.

“Yea, coming.”

I grabbed my pistol and my sniper, jumped on the boat and started those engines. Upon our arrival near the location where they were spotted, we found an abandoned wolf camp which seemed to be very recent. We were looking through what was left of the camp when Roavin called us:

“I think I found something,” he said, “it looks like some kind of flag with stars on it.”

He handed it over to Phoenix.

“Ahhh, well, looks like we’ve got a pack of European wolves on our hands. Lets go hunt every single one of them down!” , she replied.

We met up with TGW, RRA and UDSAF, armed our weapons, cracked our necks, and went wolf hunting. Following some trails, we were led to a thick, and dark forest.

“They must be hiding somewhere in this forest, waiting for the right time to pounce.” said Jamie.

The forest was dark and eerie. We walked slowly, clearing out every possible angle, when we saw a figure appear from behind a tree. All of our weapons were pointed at it.

“Don’t worry, don’t worry. It’s just me” said Haku standing in front of 20 wolves who were tied to trees.

“What in the world happened here??!!”, I asked

“Well, to put it simply, I happened to be in the area when I noticed this large pack of wolves who seemed to be preparing. I was able to pick them off, one by one, while they were alone, and capture them.”

“Imma be honest, that’s some gosh darn perfect timing.”, I replied pleasantly surprised.

“Oh, I also found this, it looked important,” he said while handing something to Phoenix, “Isn’t it like one of those missing shard thingies. Not sure.”

Phoenix examined it and was ecstatic.
“Yes, OMG, YES! Thanks Haku. Like, Thanks ALOT. We’ve been looking for any sign of the trident for almost 2 weeks now. Well, I’m gonna be honest with you peps. This is both good news, but also bad news. It’s good because well, we found another shard but bad because we found this on some European Wolves.”

“Why is that bad?” asked Merlin.

“Well, the shards were taken by some hawks but if we found them on some European Wolves, it means that the hawks are sharing the shards with their friends, which will make it a lot harder to get all of the shards back.”

“Welp. Thank guys for your help.” I said walking back onto the boat with Phoenix.

I sat down, started the engines and commenced the long boat ride home.

The Climb

“Alright all, no way to go except up, I guess.” Phoenix sighed, staring at the base of the impossibly tall mountain the SPSF found themselves at.

“Can’t we just tunnel through-” One trainee began, only to be met with a soft hand from Prarie.

“We definitely shouldn’t disturb the native ecosystem, we are tasked with protecting it, after all.”

Phoenix nodded in agreement, carefully looking for footholds to begin climbing.

“We don’t want to cause harm, correct. Especially in an ecosystem we know nothing about. Even where it looks the most dead and barren, there is life.”

“It only looks like one or two people can even reasonably try to climb this.” Roavin shook his head.

“I’ll look for another way around.” Swifty sighed, beginning to walk off towards the side of the mountain. Others began following him, leaving Prarie and Phoenix alone to climb.

“You didn’t want to follow everyone else?” Phoenix asked, as she carefully began hoisting herself up.

“I think it’s time I test my strength. I’ll take this way.” Prarie walked up to the slanted wall, and began carefully climbing as well. “Besides, we’ll stick together, just in case something happens to either of us.”

“Sounds good.”

The pair began climbing the mountain carefully, proceeding slowly so as to avoid falling or breaking things. The climb was difficult, from the lack of walkable paths to the loose, falling pebbles, to the random bugs that would be roused from their slumber and made to scurry away. The skies quickly clouded over, signalling precipitation of some form was incoming. The wind kicked up, buffeting the pair as they continued to climb.

“Looks like weather is incoming.” Phoenix sighed, her voice hardly above a whisper as she struggled to continue. “This is starting to look bad.”

“We won’t give up though.” Prarie smiled, lifting another hand to the next crevice he could find, carefully grabbing hold and pulling himself up further. “We have to find a way out of this strange world. But more importantly, we have to make sure this realm stays safe while we do so, and make sure our way back doesn’t cause any harm to our world.”

“Right.” Phoenix nodded, refueled by the determination the promising young trainee showed, and began dragging herself up once again. Suddenly, the rains started pouring, the sound of the raindrops making a hissing sound as it hit Phoenix’ skin.

“It’s raining!” Prarie shouted over the sudden downpour, using his currently-free hand to shield his eyes from the freezing rain. Phoenix hissed, trying to hold on to her current position as the rapidly-intensifying winds and rain threatened to blow the pair right off the mountain.

“Keep going.” Phoenix squeaked, her body freezing up and turning a cold dark gray. “Almost out of this.”

Prarie nodded, resuming the climb while checking to make sure that Phoenix was still climbing behind him, until the surface leveled out enough to walk on. The pair stayed low anyways, though by now it was no longer raining, but misty and foggy. Yet there still was more to go.

“I think we’re so high up, we’re above the storm.” Prarie shivered, looking around the place the pair found themselves. “Do you reckon everyone else managed to stay dry?”

“No.” Phoenix only whispered, visibly wincing as fine gray dust fell off her skin as she moved her mouth to form words.

“We should keep going, get to the top.” Prarie sighed, grapping Phoenix’ arm and dragging her up the mountain, until everything completely leveled out. At this point, they could all see the clouds clear as day beneath them, and the sun shining brightly in the sky. The entire way they had come from was completely clouded over, but the opposite side of the mountain was clear. The dense forests seemed tiny and insignificant from the peak, despite looking majestic from the ground.

“We are on top of the world.”

“I swear, plot armor is the only thing that kept me alive here.” Phoenix sighed as she felt revived by the sun’s rays, her skin returning to their normal color as she shook the rain off of her. She looked up at Prarie, then over the other side of the mountain, and gasped. “Oh my gosh you can really see everything from here.”

“Plot armor…?” Prarie asked, confused. “Is that something that can help us…?”

“Oh right! I forgot the entire reason I had wanted to climb in the first place!” Phoenix gasped, quickly whipping out a pair of binoculars and slowly scanning the visible area. “That way.” Phoenix pointed directly forwards. She stood up, taking in the view one last time. “There’s a glowing thing just over that way. That has to be some sort of portal that could take us home.”
Phoenix got quiet for a second, thinking a little bit

“Before we continue though, I want you to climb down as a soldier.”

Prarie fell silent, staring in shock at Phoenix.

“You’ve earned it, Prar. The way you’ve been fighting for justice, your passion for protecting the land, no matter how big or small, is definitely something admirable. You are a voice for those whose voices are quiet, even ignored. You certainly have my admiration, Soldier Prarie.”

Prarie nodded gratefully, a wide smile on his face as he realized what just happened.

“Well, time to climb down this mountain a soldier.”

Congratulations to Soldier Prarie!

Orc

The descent from the mountain was much easier than the climb, and the group very quickly came together once again.

“Did you see anything?” Nakari asked.

“We saw the portal, it is a far distance away, so we should get going as quickly as possible.”

“I figured.” Roavin nodded, picking up the pace as he took the lead forward into the dense forests.

Everyone followed suit, treading carefully through the thick forest, until they came across a small clearing. At first glance, nothing was there, and the group was just about to keep moving. However, Phoenix stopped the group, when she heard the small noise of laughter.

An orc popped out from behind a tree, lifting a tree straight up into the air, then knocking a series of trees to the ground, laughing as they crashed to the ground.

“Hold it!” Phoenix shouted, drawing out her katanas as she leaped forward, followed by the rest of her group. “What are you even doing?”

“This is my land, get out.” The orc growled.

“You’re literally destroying the forest.” Prarie crossed his arms. “You shouldn’t do that.”

“Watch me.” The orc laughed, swinging the tree he held at the group. However, his hit was slow enough for the SPSF to skillfully dodge.

“Cringe.” Swifty laughed, aiming a gun right for the orc and firing. The orc laughed, swinging the tree right for Swifty, who skillfully dodged once again.

“No u.” The orc shouted, turning to throw the trunk at a group of trainees. The group dodged the attack, laughing at the orc failing to take down any SPSFers.

“Let’s get rid of him, he’s not even of this world. He’s just from another world.” Nakari sighed, throwing a spear at the creature.

Phoenix jumped up and came from behind the being, slicing the creature in two with her fiery katanas, landing on her feet gracefully.

“Let’s get this place cleaned up.” Phoenix ordered, picking up the orc’s trash from the clearing while others focused on clearing the demolished trees from the area.

After a little while, a few tall beings stepped up from the woods.

“Let us finish here, if you’d like, and find your way home. Thank you for taking down the orc.” One of the beings said, holding out their hand.

“Alright, sounds good. Thank you.” Phoenix grabbed the being’s hand, shaking it firmly. “Sorry about the orc.”

“That being has been here for a long while, we were getting sick of waiting for it to leave.”

“Understood.” Phoenix nodded, and the SPSF left the clearing, leaving the mysterious beings to clean it up and start planting seeds.

Smol Fur Empire

The sun rose over the strange land once again, as the members of the SPSF rose once again, waking up one by one. The crew had gained new friends, and they’ve lost some friends. Nevertheless, they were all stuck in the new world, though at least they had a general idea of where they needed to go.

Phoenix was the first to rise with the sun, her wings stretched out to absorb every ray of sunlight she could. Soon enough, the generals would wake up, dismissing the night guard from their post and allowing them to get some rest while they prepared breakfast for everyone. More of the soldiers and trainees would rise up soon enough, helping to clean up the campsite, leaving just the sleeping bags of the sleeping guards by the time Roavin and Nakari announced that breakfast was ready. Everyone would eat, saving two bowls for the night guards, and then the most junior SPSFer would wake the sleeping guards. That trainee would pack the remaining sleeping bags up while everyone else helped clean up breakfast while the night guards groggily ate their breakfast, and then, after making extra sure that their campsite was totally cleaned up, they would head off, leaving not a trace of their stay behind.

This morning was no different. Pretty soon, Phoenix heard the rustling that signalled that the generals had woken up and were on their way to relieve the night guard of their duty.

Last night’s guard duties had fallen to Swifty and Shangyuen, and just a look at them told that the pair was tired. The two barely made it to their sleeping bags before crashing.

When Phoenix’ sunbath was done, she flew into the tallest tree she could easily spot, trying to orient herself to where they needed to go, as well as look around and make sure there weren’t any other groups in the vicinity up to no good. And very quickly an unusual rustling of leaves caught Phoenix’ attention, in the direction that the SPSF would go once their morning routine was done. Upon closer observation, she spotted a few wolves, accompanied by a few others. She flew back down from the trees, landing right next to the generals while they waited for the deer meat they hunted yesterday to cook.

“Hey, seems like there’s some suspicious activity ahead. We need to move quickly and quietly today.” Phoenix whispered over the sound of the crackling fire.

“What’s up?” Nakari asked, poking one of the steaks with a stick.

“Wolves. And they’re not alone.”

“Lone Wolves United?” Roavin asked, toasting some bread on a skewer over another fire.

“Possibly. And they’re not alone.”

“That’s not a good sign.” Nakari sighed. “If that’s the Wolves, then that means that somehow, they got here. And if they got here, then more likely than not there’s some target they want.”

“Exactly.”

The three sat in silence as they finished their morning tasks, as Phoenix went off to wake the rest of the military up and get the camp cleaned up. The rest of the morning was uneventful, and after a while, everything was cleaned up.

The SPSF moved quicker through the woods than normal today, as Phoenix kept her eyes on the group that they quickly closed in on.

A look in the sky showed a harrowing sight: Black Hawks quickly flying ahead. However, old friends popped in, gathering a massive showing after a few hours on the chase.

The target was just ahead: a smallish gun-shaped device. It was held in a mostly abandoned clearing, where the wilderness was beginning to grow back over the village within.

“They’ve gathered quite a bit of people…” Haku sighed, sizing up the giant pile on the opposing side.

“We can’t let them take that gun. Do you all know what it is?” Benevolent Thomas stared at the gun, the look of worry clear on his face.

“If they get that, the raiders will have easier, deadlier access to other towns.” Jamie sighed, patting their unicorn gently on its nose.

“Exactly. We can’t let them get it, no matter the cost.” Haku shook his head.

“Phoenix, call in the Civilians. We can’t let them get this thing, no matter what it costs us.” Benevolent Thomas ordered, looking determined ahead at the abandoned village ahead.

“Let’s charge in the meantime and try to keep them away.” Phoenix nodded, leading troops into the area, fighting hard against the invaders.

As civilians gathered over the next few days, they finally managed to provide a real fight against the raiders. The battle was fierce, and lasted for a long time. But finally, the raiders began to retreat. The defenders cleaned up after the battle, securing the village from future attack.

The journey, however, continues.

The Long Journey Home

“Hey, we did well there against the raiders!” Melix chirped cheerfully, as the SPSFers made their way away from the abandoned village. “We defended that village, and the raiders won’t be coming back anytime soon!”

“Right.” Phoenix nodded, a satisfied smile on her face. “And you’ve been doing amazing too, you’re just about ready to become a soldier too… but do you have the spirit?”

“Spirit?” Melix asked, a puzzled look on his face. “What do you mean?”

“You will know what I mean.” Phoenix patted the trainee’s shoulder before walking ahead to where the generals stood, chatting happily with Commander Viet about military things.

The march after the siege wasn’t nearly as fast-paced or demanding as immediately prior to the siege. Trainees chatted happily amongst themselves, filled with a new sense of pride and hope as they talked about what they would do as soon as they got home. The soldiers stayed vigilant, keeping their eyes out for new opportunities to help anyone they could find. Melix found himself more in-line with the soldiers than not as the march continued that day, taking every opportunity he had to assist where he could.

That evening, it was clear that Melix was preoccupied with his thoughts rather than paying attention to what was going on.

“And tonight’s guard will be… Prar and Melix.” Phoenix announced. Melix nodded, somewhat relieved that he would have an excuse to stay up all night to contemplate what was meant.

“Alright Melix, let’s go to post. Do your best to stay awake.” Prarie chuckled as he climbed up a tree, keeping vigilant watch to the clearing where the rest of the military prepared to sleep.

Melix climbed up another tree, coming to rest on a branch that gave him the best view of the area. The moon rose high into the sky as the camp fell quiet.

“What’s wrong?” Prarie whispered from where he was, taking note of his distracted friend.

“Phoenix told me earlier today that I’m just about ready to be promoted. But she asked a confusing question and didn't clarify.”

“What was that question?” Prarie asked, moving closer.

“Do I have the spirit?”

“Well, I think it’s fairly obvious what she meant.” Prarie smiled. “She means, have you learned what it means to be a member of the SPSF?”

“Well yeah. We defend everything from those who wish to do things harm. It’s beyond just simply defending random places against raiders, but a sense of wanting to protect everyone’s right to exist, no matter what form they take. Defending the environment from those who want to make a mess of things.”

Prarie nodded, looking up to the night sky, in silence.

However, a loud explosion followed by a piercing cry interrupted the stillness of the night. Prarie and Melix swiveled their heads in the direction of the cry, seeing a bat fall from the sky, landing on the ground.

“Find the hunter. I’ll take care of the bat.” Melix whispered, swinging down from the trees, running after the creature that fell to the ground.

Melix scooped the creature into his arms, surprised by how light the creature was. He took off once again for the camp, where he quickly examined the bat to find where it had been shot, and treated the creature the best he could. The creature soon fell asleep in Melix’ arms, which left him to finish the night guard duty with the injured bat in his arms. Prarie soon returned to the camp with the culprit tightly bound, a man who seemed worse for wear.

“Found the dude.” Prarie chuckled, gesturing to the man he dragged in. “He tried to put up a fight, but you don’t mess with a highly-trained soldier of the SPSF.”

“He shot a Fijian Flying Fox. It’ll live, but it’s messed up that anyone would shoot an innocent creature that’s just existing.”

“It really is. Especially with how few of them are left, trying to kill them is really bad.” Prarie sighed.

“Good job, Melix.” A mysterious yet familiar voice echoed from the darkness. When Prarie and Melix turned around, they saw Phoenix standing behind them, a large smile on her face.

“What-” Melix looked to the minister with another confused expression, seemingly unable to understand what just happened.

“I’m a light sleeper. I heard the gunshot, and was pleasantly surprised how Melix really showed his spirit almost immediately. And saving the bat’s life, I’m thoroughly impressed.” Phoenix elaborated.

“Oh.”

“Any last words, Trainee Melix?” Phoenix smirked, stuffing her hand in her pocket. Melix jumped back, terrified.

“Wait, don’t-” Melix held his arms up, only to relax when Phoenix pulled out a little emblem from her pocket. She handed it over to the new soldier, trying to hold in her laughter.

“Any first words, Soldier Melix?”

“Thank you!” Melix smiled, studying the small pin thing with unmistakable joy.

“When we get home, we need to hold proper promotion ceremonies for the both of you.”

Congrats to Soldier Melix!!!

Out-Of-Season Occupation

By NCE

The radar operator from the Finixian Armed Forces spotted the anomaly on his signals during his end-of-shift rounds. He sighed and sprinted up the stairs to SPSF Command, informing the commanders of the raid on Christmas. They looked worried, though they laughed. Did the raiders have any sense of style? Christmastime only begins after Thanksgiving. The raiders had come out in large numbers. The liberators needed to strike as fast and as hard as possible to prevent raider reinforcements from entering the holy site. Phoenix was the first to form a plan. "Get out the Combat Santa suits, this will be a jolly one. We strike in 10 hours."

Joining forces with Libcord, the Santa-suited South Pacific Special Forces listened to Christmas music before the battle, using the anger building up inside them at such a disgusting violation of tradition as yet another weapon. Though the raiders had 30-some units, compared to the defenders' high-50s turnout. Combine that with the rage of the defenders and the Combat Santa suits, the raiders stood no chance of stopping the attack. Christmas was liberated, and the holidays could continue as they should.
