Cabinet Accountability

We already have a law about releasing cabinet information. Heres how often its been used...
Not as much as the law states.

While Sunshine Act provisions are nice, it turns out they don't really encourage accountability. :\ By the time records are released, you've already gotten away with hoodwinking people and nobody cares anymore to bring it up again.

I've always felt the best way to ensure cabinet accountability is to make sure that regular breifings/QA's occur with the various Ministers in the Assembly. That broadly speaking falls under the Chair's purview to organise, and is fairly easy to set up.

You may remember from my campaign that I was planning to do a feedback form on my performance (I'll be releasing it after the Chair election ends so you'll see the format of it soon). I could do something similar for the Cabinet. Would that be a good idea?

Quite right. I've long been a strong proponent of having regularly scheduled Question Time sessions. Of course, part of the onus is also on legislators to actually demand accountability from their elected officials. There is no point in setting up those spaces for accountability if we don't take advantage of them. And might I point out that accountability is more than just trying to recall a minister when a newspaper points out how inactive they are, if anything it's making sure that things don't get to that point in the first place.

I do not participate in the regional server, but I am happy to talk through instant messaging or on the forum.

Kinda, but not really what I meant - that would be post-facto evaluation, not really ongoing scrutiny.

What I had in mind is something along the lines of a Cabinet Q&A/questions thread which we would do on a regular (ie; monthly) basis. It's something I have proposed in the past when running for office and various Prime Ministers have pledged to do, but have never consistently implemented.

Which is why the Chair should take control of the process, and make clear to the Cabinet that they are expected to provide a regular briefing (if I was doing it in the first week of March, April & May, first week of June, July August, and first week of November, December, January) and then answer questions from the Assembly. Don't leave it up to the Cabinet to do it if they want.

I'd be willing to do this.

If PH wants to, I'd be supportive of this, but we also have a Minister of Media, so I broadly think organizing this could fit within their purview?

No, as this is legislative scrutiny of the executive - the Cabinet shouldn't be holding itself accountable.
