TSP and TNP Tensions Rise Over Quorum Raids

By Rabbitz

In January, a Security Council proposal was submitted to repeal “Liberate the Confederation of Corrupt Dictators” (CCD), a known fascist region. This sparked a statement from McMasterdonia, the Delegate of The North Pacific, who stated that “[CCD] should only have [their] liberation repealed when it is time to refound it as a reminder that fascism and nazism has no place in NationStates”. In following up with this statement, McMasterdonia proposed a quorum raid, which is a raid to remove certain Delegates from their positions so that they cannot approve a proposal, in order to prevent it from going to vote.

Their action would have been unopposed by the South Pacific if every region that supported the proposal was a confirmed pro-fascist region. This proved not the case as Renegade Islands Alliance, a partner in defending that has participated in anti-fascist ops with the South Pacific, was on that list. As a defender region, the South Pacific is obligated to defend the Renegade Islands Alliance; and in a statement from the Cabinet of the South Pacific, the South Pacific Special Forces will “go into military operations assuming those raids . . . [are] against innocent regions”.

Further increasing tensions is the statement from McMasterdonia that “[these] activities . . . have ultimately aided the causes of fascism and heightened the profile of the Confederation . . .”, implying that the South Pacific, by potentially defending the raided regions, would be aiding the causes of fascism. In the Cabinet response, the South Pacific stated that it “[has] one of the strictest moderation policies covering hateful and extremist political and ideological views” and that TSP is “dismayed and disappointed” at McMasterdonia’s statement saying otherwise.

As a result of the high political tension, the planned event celebrating the anniversary of the Aurora Alliance, the treaty between The North Pacific and the South Pacific, has been postponed until further notice. While tensions between the two regions remain high, the anniversary event could be expected to remain on the bench indefinitely.

Regardless of the event, the main questions still remain: how will The North Pacific and the South Pacific solve this crisis, what will happen to the targeted regions, and what does this conflict mean for the R/D community at large?

Nat Resigns as Associate Justice

By Purple Hyacinth

Nat resigned as Associate Justice on February 5, citing RL workload. They have been an Associate Justice since December 2019. During their time as an Associate Justice, they were the Presiding Justice on several cases, including HCLQ 2003 Legality of Closed Local Council Elections. This particular case ruled that, under the law as written at the time, the Native WA restriction on polls in Local Council elections was illegal. The ruling sparked a lot of Assembly discussion over how to fix the issue, and ultimately a proposal that allowed the Local Council to legally pass a law that codified the Native WA restriction was passed.

Nat has been praised for their work on the Court, not just in ruling on cases but other work as well. For example, fellow Associate Justice Belschaft stated that “Nat has been an excellent justice, and took it upon himself to do a lot of the admin work around stuff like Sunshine Act compliance”.

Nat’s resignation was not unexpected--in December, they had announced their intention to retire. This meant that the Cabinet had already found a nominee to replace Nat as Associate Justice: Roavin. They have been described as highly qualified for the position. However, the Assembly must approve of Roavin’s nomination before they can become a Justice, and the vote has not begun yet.

Member of Ministry of Media Founder of Today's Featured Region

By Islands of Unity

The featured region of the day today February 7th 2021, is Ankh Morpork, a small Discworld casual fandom region (named after a setting in the series) founded by none other than our very own Langburn, member of the TSP Assembly and Ministry of Media, who had this to say about their appreciation of Terry Prachet and the Discworld series in their introduction to their upcoming piece for The Southern Journal:

"I loved Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books when I was younger and I still do. The rich, imaginative Discworld cleverly lambasted and ridiculed the ridiculousness of the real world…"

The region had fallen into inactivity since being founded in 2016 and the current WFE features an Antifascist message to the wider NS community from Langburn due to the promotion of the region as a part of NationStates Featured Region feature. Langburn had this to say on the matter in the RMB of Ankh Morpork today:

"I am sorry that this region never really got started and I honestly forgot that it existed to be honest.

However, today, as I saw that Ankh Morpork is featured. This is a great opportunity to state that very clear to the world that there is ZERO space for real life neo Nazis, fascists and Nazi sympathisers on NationStates. Not now, not ever."

Islas's note: As Minister, I'd like to congratulate Langburn not only for being featured but also for taking it a step beyond by using that platform to speak out against hate.

Please make sure to congratulate Langburn if you see them around the region today, they've earned it.

February 2021 Cabinet Elections Conclude

By Purple Hyacinth

The February 2021 Cabinet elections have just concluded. There were no surprise upsets and everything went smoothly, but that is not to say there was nothing interesting going on.

In the Prime Minister race, we had Glen-Rhodes/Sandaoguo and Jay Coop/Qvait running. Glen won the race by a large margin, with the first place votes 32-11 in Glen’s favor, and no first place votes for Re-Open Nominations (RON). One possible reason for the win is that Glen has been a big part of the TSP regional politics scene for many years, compared to Jay, who only became involved recently.

For Minister of Culture, North Prarie and Royaltica ran. Prarie won the race by a large margin as well, 33-5 in the first place votes. During the campaigning period, Royaltica was criticized for their inactivity, likely a factor in Prarie’s win.

The Minister of Media race saw three candidates running: incumbent Islas/Islands of Unity, Rabbitz, and Belschaft. Belschaft’s campaign was unique, as he was running to abolish the Ministry, which appeared to be a somewhat unpopular opinion among the Assembly. During the MoM debate hosted by the South Pacific Independent News Network, there were some heated interactions between the candidates. Rabbitz came under fire for his belief in pushing defenderism, which some people interpreted as wanting to publish defender propaganda. Islas has generated activity within the Ministry during their time as MoM, so while the race was close than some of the others, Islas still won by a significant margin, with 23 first place votes out of 44 ballots cast. Belschaft got 10, Rabbitz 8, and RON 3.

Roavin was the only candidate for Minister of Foreign Affairs. He ran on a campaign that was largely focused around is ideal for ambassadors who were more involved. Being a well-established figure in regional politics, it was no surprise that he didn’t face much competition to RON, getting 38 first place votes to RON’s 2.

The Minister of Engagement race was another one-candidate race, with United States of Vietnam running for reelection. People have largely approved of his performance as Minister, and he won all 42 of the first place votes.

For the Minister of Defence race, Witchcraft and Sorcery was also the only candidate. He has been quite active in the South Pacific Special Forces recently, and got 41 first place votes compared to 1 first place vote for RON.

Detente with Balder

By Rabbitz

What most thought would never happen, happened: a detente with Balder and TSP. This is truly a historic moment for Balder and TSP as for years both sides had looked at each other with distaste and annoyance. For context, the source of this previous distaste happened when an incident(s) involving a TSP ambassador led to the proscription of TSP officials around 2015/2016. Since then, relations had been frosty; however, this detente should warm things up between the two regions and deteriorate the once prevalent frost.

In addition, it seems that the announcement of this detente on the NS forums has been well-received as various nations have come out to express their congratulations to both parties. Even well-known nations like Libertanny (TEP) and Jar Wattinree (NPO) have expressed their appreciation. Overall, the reaction from NSGP has been positive, but a few questions still remain in the air: will this detente last? What will this mean for pre-existing relations? What will this mean for cake vs pie? Only time will tell, but we can certainly have hope that maybe this detente will sprout into something more down the road.

TRRouble with the NPO

By Moonfungus

(original title submitted: NPO-TRR embassy closes over opposition from natives
by Moonfungus)

On May 2, The Rejected Realms (TRR) released a statement stating that they were reconciling relations with The Pacific (NPO) once again, more than six years after the Peace Accords between the two regions was nuked due to the reveal of NPO’s plot to destabilize and coup multiple regions at that time. Dyllypoly, the Officer of Foreign Affairs of TRR, stated that they were “looking forward to positive future relations with the New Pacific Order.”

The move, however, elicited generally negative reactions from natives of the region, including Crazy Girl, a longtime native of TRR and former root admin of the region’s offsite forum, Toerana, the current Editor-in-Chief of The Rejected Times, and Crowheim, the current Officer of World Assembly Affairs of the region. In addition, several members of the NS forum, including Cormactopia Prime and Unibot (both nations situated in TRR as of now), expressed their open disapproval of the decision. The matter wasn’t helped by some NPO natives either, who upon gaining entry into TRR’s Regional Message Board via the newly constructed embassy, joked about couping and then annexing TRR into NPO. Things came to a head when Crazy Girl, annoyed by the RMB’s conduct, moved their main nation to the region of The Moon (Crazy Girl did however leave a puppet, RR Girl, behind to maintain their citizenship status in the region) for the near future.

The result was the Delegate of TRR, Chimes, stepping in and announcing the withdrawal of the embassy between TRR and NPO after consulting with Xoriet, the Senator of Diplomatic Affairs of the NPO, who stated that they “did not wish to cause further internal drama – in particular by making long term members leave.” The embassy lasted less than 24 hours before it was withdrawn. The whole affair has put a big question mark on future relations between the two regions, while tensions still remain high in TRR regarding the region’s foreign affairs policy.
