[Worldbuilding - Discussion] Universal Magical Pantheon
#1

Hello there!

Since magic is abundant here in the Aurora canon magical creatures can exist. These can often be seen as supernatural by some. Nations and species might have their own set of Gods or even reject them. Now I was wondering if it wouldn't be possible to get all of these Gods and Goddesses in the same pantheon. I guess it's an idea of a streamlined and overarching set of gods. The idea first sprung up in discord and wondered if the Dwarvish God Murukhdin could perhaps have a place in the Everweiss pantheon. So let me specify a bit how this would exactly work...

Gods
What exactly would these Gods be? Let's call these guys supreme magical beings that are revered to some capacity. They are transcendent beings compared to our mortal characters in Aurora. Immortal creatures with unmatched magical powers which perhaps created Terra Aurora itself? Gods can be created to help build up the background of your plot and be interacted with in history. However, let me be clear that I'm not advocating for players to be able to RP in IC events as one of these Gods. These Gods should only serve to help worldbuild your plot and the canon. Rather than being active elements, they are to be passive elements which shaped the background of Terra Aurora and serve as an explanation as to why certain things are. E.g. an island was created through the actions of a god by flooding land with sea to protect the chosen people from persecution. Hence why they are separated from the mainland.

Pantheon
What would this pantheon exactly be? I think the best picture to describe it is the Greek pantheon or Tolkiens' pantheon of great spirits. Granted I'm not well versed in his universe, but I have some understanding that there are these supernatural. Different magical beings that have different powers for which they are revered. They are all part of the same "family", but act on their own accord. While they may be revered under many different names they would be the same being. It could weave the Aurora Canon together. I also think that all of these beings should be of equal strength and I think no demi-gods should be able to be RP'ed as well. I guess it all depends on how much importance we put to this pantheon and its Gods.

Interactions with Aurora
Now this might be the trickiest part. How do we prevent godmodding? I'm not really sure myself. Perhaps allowing such interactions only in the past could be a solution. Though perhaps that's a bit too much liberty? Then again there are no rules as of yet that prevent for example Murukhdin (Dwarvish God) granting the lands inhabited by the Mountain Dwarves to be full of gold or magical stones. Where would we draw the line of what is allowed and what not? Maybe I'm just looking too much for a set of rules...

Thoughts
While I think it's a fun idea to explore, I'm not entirely sure it has its uses for our canon IC-wise. Unless there's an IC theory that stipulates this possibility, all of our peoples will revere these beings as one of their own. Unless this pantheon is known by all. I'm sure we could put a few worldbuilding minds together to discuss how such a pantheon would have created Terra Aurora. But this might inhibit creativity of new players who don't fit within this pantheon. This idea can fit quite well if everyone wanted a Tolkienesque canon, but not quite with players who are more leaning to Steampunk. Just like in the A1-0 canon, we leave these magical capabilities pretty open to the players to allow the most players to enjoy it. Maybe this pantheon pushes the canon too much into a certain direction and might lose its appeal to some.
Demi-gods form another problem. If we have another Zeus, there'll be Herculeses everywhere and that should be perhaps forbidden. Though the rules of what is allowed magically aren't written anywhere. (Unless I have been a massive dumb dumb again) Although we could say that these beings have no desire or capability to procreate, they still have supreme magical power. Like in Murukhdin's example, they are still able to create life so how could it not make a Hercules or two. Perhaps we should make a rule surrounding demi-gods an prohibiting them from this canon?
Another problem is that of Christianity. Could it fit in such a world created by magical superbeings? Or maybe is it another worldbuilding challenge? As stated before, this might inhibit the player's creativity.

The question stated above are not ones which can be answered alone or decided by one person. Therefore I invite you all in this discussion. Maybe it's all a bit too close to godmodding and should be scrapped, but I thought that starting this discussion was worth it nonetheless.

P.S. If I gave you a headache I'm sorry. It certainly wasn't my intention, but I hope this idea and questions are worth the trouble.

I discarded the idea of having many gods and goddesses in Everweiss. I have now the idea of having a God, basically, a Deer. He is the God of Elves since Everweiss is an Elven nation. Also, I apologize for just responding now

On the topic of demigods, I don’t think they should be straight up banned. Not all demigods need to be absurdly powerful, and being a demigod could be an explanation for why someone has the ability to cast ordinary spells. One could even have an entire race descended from a god, as reasoning for why they have some minor magical properties.
I do see the problem you see here, overwhelmingly powerful characters that can wield the might of their godly parentage, but not all demigods need to be powerful. There are plenty of people in Greek myths that were descended from gods but don’t actually have any godly power.

Currently there are no Prythonic Gods but I do intend to have them - but they would just be mythological figures. They do not exist although people believe they exist, and believe that it was a deity who would have caused something supernatural.

However, these nonexistent deities and Prythonic mythology would be based of real events and people or beings, some of whom would pose as deities (after the religions were created though). ^^
