I spent a week in India in December 2012. It was really cool, and I found it fascinating to see the huge cultural and material differences between India western countries. You'll definitely learn a lot from that trip.

I definitely hope so Kris. The past two years I have spent a few weeks traveling in Asia, last year I went to Japan, and in 2012 I went to China. I enjoy traveling, and I love having first hand experiences with other cultures.

I spent two weeks in China in mid-2011. I went to Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Guilin, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macao. It was an awesome experience, except for the fact that halfway through the trip I lost my camera, and from then on had to take photos with my iPod. Sad
I've never been to Japan though. How is it?

Japan is awesome. I'm not even sure where to start it is so cool, the culture is incredible, the people were incredibly friendly to us, and the country itself is simply beautiful. We landed in Osaka and then spent three day's in Kyoto, which is a marvelous city, with a rich blend of modern and ancient architecture.

Then we visited Hiroshima, and the Hiroshima peace memorial museum. I've visited quite a few war memorials, and let me tell you, I have been to no more emotionally moving place. The shear scale of the destruction wrought by the Atom Bomb is mind boggling, and the perseverance of the Japanese people through the aftermath the war is nothing less then inspiring. To read of a tragedy is one thing, to stand on the ground it took place on, to see the statues in it's memory, to see the scars the cities bears even today, is something completely different. I say again, the emotional power of the place is enormous.

Then we visited the shrine at Miyajima, one of the most scenic places in Japan. It is an island with a Shinto shrine on it, so we took a ferry to it. It is an amazing place, deer wander through the many pathways on the island unmolested due to their status as sacred messengers of the gods. The buildings, ancient and elegant rise up from the waters during high tide, and the shrines famous orange spirit gate is a marvel to behold. It is a very spiritually living place, a place where humanity and nature coexist in a beautiful harmony.

We took a bullet train (not all it's cracked up to be, but at least it was better then having to take another flight) to the area around mount Fuji, and hiked up to the top of the Hoei craters from the 1707 eruption. If Miyajima represents coexistence with nature, Fuji is the triumph of nature, a primal place, with the terrible beauty of the wilderness, and the glory of nature is untamed by humanity.

Finally, we arrived in Tokyo. Now remember, I've been to Sanghai, Beijing, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, I have some experience with big cities, but nothing could have prepared me for the metropolis of Tokyo. So many sky scrapers, in such close proximity, such bustle in the street, people, everywhere the people, walking, driving, riding, never have I seen so many people in such a small space. The feeling of civilization permeates the air, the buildings, even the ground itself. Most amazingly, I never saw a single piece of litter during my entire time there. Our group was actually the first foreigners allowed in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings observation deck since the Tsunami, and while viewing the city beneath us, I saw something amazing, a massive swath of land in the heart of the city full of beautiful green trees. I made a mental note of this, and amazingly we visited it later in the day, and it turned out to be the Shrine to Emperor Meiji (of Meiji Restoration fame). And it is incredible, a massive forest, right in the middle of Tokyo. The sensation of rapid transition, of one moment being in the largest metropolitan area on earth, and the next being in the peaceful woods, is simply indescribable. However, it is that feeling, that communion of nature and technology, that in my mind best describes Japan, and the Japanese culture.

Wow, I didn't mean to be so wordy and loquacious in writing this, but I do love talking about my travels. It's one of but a few bright lights in my life. Futurama is another.

Oh, how I love Futurama. I'm glad it came back, but I'm sad it's gone again. Such is life.

Best two quotes in your post. Thank you for that marvelous description of Japan. I couldn't have asked for a better one.
