Today is the 24th anniversay of the coup by President Fujimori. He went live on television late at night to announce the dissolution of the constitution, both houses of Congress and the reorganisation of the judiciary. He then ordered the military to close access to the legislative palace and arrest several journalists and opposition leaders.

Today is also the 137th anniversary of the beginning Pacific War, with Chile declaring war on Peru after we refused to stay neutral on its conflict with Bolivia. We ended up losing two provinces and had our capital under occupation for over five years.

Local elections in the UK today, including elections for the Scottish Parliament, which I'll be voting in. The predictions are already pretty depressing, with an expectation that the recent anti-semitism contortroversy will cause Labour to lose seats, which will seriously hamper Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn's chances of making it to the next general election.

Actually, I want Corbyn as PM, or at the very least to get a good long run leading the opposition. He has demonstrated in his seven months of Labour leadership more engagement in the issues affecting the less fortunate and more genuine human compassion that I can ever recall seeing in another politician in my lifetime and he's a major reason why I, and many other people like me, have finally started to take an interest in politics after years of apathy and disillusionment. He's not perfect, sure - no one is - and I'm not going to agree with everything he puts on the table, but his sins have been slight so far IMO and I'd much rather someone like him, who actually treats politics seriously and wants to make a positive difference in the lives of those struggling under the current government, than someone like David Cameron who acts like a schoolboy in Parliament on issues he's supposed to be setting the example for, who has demonstrated complete ignorance of the impact of his own government's cuts, and who led the cheering when we voted to start bombing Syria, to name just three examples.
EDIT: Which is not supposed to be me sniping back at you in response, but I just get really annoyed by how much bad press Corbyn gets in the majority of mainstream media - often over very little things, many of which aren't even faults - when the government is allowed to get away with so many of the truly harmful policies they have implemented, even in just the last year, without much comment. Politics has become extremely unbalanced in the UK (and, indeed, in the US) and younger people especially are desperate for change. Sadly, not enough of us are actually voting for it.

News update from Venezuela!
Since the parliamentary elections last December, things have been... turbulent.
The opposition-dominated National Assembly took office as planned, but government attempts to diminish its influence and power started almost from the beginning. President Maduro's government has stripped away some of its powers (violating the Constitution in the process), ignored its procedures, flat out refused to comply with its rulings, and so on. Both branches of the government are in a metaphorical war, with the executive and ruling party blindly opposing any and all bills put forward by the opposition and disrupting the proceedings of the Assembly in any way it can, and the opposition-controlled Assembly refusing to obey any presidential decree that conflicts with the law and looking for ways to remove Maduro from office as soon as possible.
Lately, the executive has been using the Supreme Court, which is under control of the ruling party, to declare as unconstitutional the bills of the opposition (victims include: a law to release political prisoners, a law to reform the Central Bank, and some others), while the opposition has called for a recall referendum to remove Maduro from power (according to the 1999 Constitution, any public official can be recalled by a referendum after half of his/her term has passed), and has started to collect signatures to this end.
While this happens, the economic crisis just keeps getting worse, and due to both sides of the political spectrum focusing on eliminating each other instead of collaborating to end it, it doesn't seem like it's going to end any time soon.
