I think RG already mentioned, that people talking against the government were imprisoned because of that.
Sometimes it's just not as easy as "Just demonstrate and it will resolve". It's only easy, if the time is right and if it's a really, really big movement.

Also, we have tried before. The government sent the National Guard to attack protesters and arrested opposition leaders (they're still imprisoned, by the way).

Update: it seems that Maduro, or whoever was dumb enough to suggest the idea, got cold feet. After a huge uproar, both at home and abroad, the Supreme Court reversed its decision, and restored the Assembly's legislative powers. It doesn't make much of a difference, as the Court usually declares as unconstitutional everything the Assembly does, but well.

Still, the opposition has said it is too little, too late, and has called for protests. There is not much they can do, so I'm not sure if something will be accomplished.

There's a situation developing in Paraguay. The President is only supposed to serve one term of five years, but a secret Senate vote has allowed Horacio Cartes to run for reelection. The Paraguayan people responded by storming the Congress building and setting it alight. I can understand why.

So, Venezuela is finally making it onto the BBC news. They're doing an extended piece on those driven to crime because of poverty and explaining all the background to it as well, but, honestly, this is the first time I've seen them report any of it. Sad

Speaking of Venezuela, CNN en Español in Venezuela was shut down awhile back after an exclusive report on corrupt government officials giving Venezuelan passports and visas to people with ties to terrorism from the Venezuelan embassy in Iraq. I nearly forgot about this.

RE: News from your Country - RandomGuy199 - 04-12-2017

@Seraph: yeah, considering the government keeps harassing journalists, it's no wonder they don't come here to report.

@Qvait: Holy fucking shit. I knew CNN en Español had been shut down, but I didn't know why (I thought it was simply a convenient scapegoat).

Yeah, I was writing that message as I watched and posted before it finished. The entire crew got deported.
