In the only two gubernatorial elections of 2017, the Democrats have won both New Jersey and Virginia, making it a gubernatorial net gain of one.
  • In New Jersey, Republican Governor and Trump supporter Chris Christie was term limited and had a 17 percent approval rating; Democrat Phil Murphy has defeated Republican Kim Guadagno.
  • In Virginia, Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe was also term limited; Democrat Ralph Northam has defeated Republican Ed Gillespie.
Update: Democrats are making gains into the Republican-controlled Virginia House of Delegates.
  • Danica Roem (D) will become the nation's first openly transgender state legislator, defeating an anti-LGBT and 25-year incumbent Republican legislator.
  • Chris Hurst (D), boyfriend of journalist shot dead on live TV in 2015, has been elected in an upset victory.
  • Elizabeth Guzman and Hala Ayala (D) have defeated Republican incumbents to become first Latina members of the House of Delegates.
  • Lee Carter, a Democratic Socialist, has been elected over an incumbent Republican legislator.
Other updates:
  • Andrea Jenkins (D) becomes first openly transgender person elected to public office in the Minneapolis City Council.
  • Ravi Bhalla (D) has been elected Mayor of Hoboken and is New Jersey's first Sikh mayor.
  • Vi Lyles (D) has been elected Mayor of Charlotte and is the city's first African American mayor.
  • Mitch Colvin (D) defeated 3-term incumbent Nat Robertson (R ) to become Mayor of Fayetteville.
  • Democrats are en route to taking the majority in the Washington State Senate.

This is the first anti-Trump electoral wave and possibly not the last.

In an upset victory, Democrat Doug Jones has defeated Republican Roy Moore in the US Senate special election in Alabama, reducing the Republican lead in the Senate to 51–49.

The Alabama result actually surprised me, I just assumed that the electing the P**sy Grabber meant one of that country's main parties had deceided that transactional power trumps moral representation...  really surprised, and a little bit of faith in humanity restored.

One vote has turned the two-thirds majority that the Republican Party had in the Virginia House of Delegates into a 50–50 split.
