PROTEST TURNED VIOLENT IN VARANA
[Image: UePP4Mt.jpg]

The construction of Sallodesia's new military base in Cinis met great resistance amongst the Cinaian populace. Throughout August, protests occurred in Cinis and in Livonia, mostly in a peaceful and organized manner. But yesterday, in Varana, a clash between police officers and the protesters had turned violent, causing thirteen people and five police officers to be injured and a forced end to the protest in Varana. The Mayor of Varana ordered a day of respite and ordered a halt on protests until 24 hours have passed since the clash. Governor Wilde has made visits to the hospital, meet with the wounded officers and protesters before pledging compensation for them and their kin.

A police investigation is underway to deduce the chronology of the events. Initial findings suggested that the protesters brought some fireworks, which are prohibited by the city to be lit except for national or state celebrations. The police on site had attempted to seize the contraband but were resisted by the protesters which escalated into scuffles and the police tried to arrest the disobeying protesters. This action escalated the situation and soon protesters began throwing things at the police. Some of the protesters argued that because the fireworks were not lit, the officers did not have the right to make arrests.

THE MARINA BRACED FOR NORTHERN TOURISTS
With winter looming on the horizon for Pacifica's northern hemisphere, the Marina Guild is ready to utilize its new facilities to accommodate new tourists. "The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has put billions of Fera in refurbishing the marina, and the Guild is eager to benefit from this" stated the Chairman of the Guild, Robert Tilde. A lot of the hotels and resorts in the marina still undergoing renovations, expected to be finished in early November, in time for the holiday season. The marina also reportedly hired more street cleaners to maintain the area's historic waterfront promenade clean amongst all the constructions and renovations. "We expected revenue increase for this year. The money will help the businesses here to flourish even more," continued the Chairman with excitement. The President and his family are also expected to celebrate Union Day in the Marina this September, precisely in the Old Square of the town Falver for trooping the colors ceremony.

PEOPLE'S VOICE: AN END TO NEUTRALITY IN LIVANA
Reginald Wang, NP Foreign Correspondent - For time immemorial, Livana rarely engaged in International debacles. It has been the philosophy since the Livonian Revolt of the 19th century, that Livana will be better off as a neutral country; enemy to none, friend to all, as Jeremy Clinton later stated in one of his speeches. However, this philosophy seemed to no longer have a part in Livana's contemporary administrative and foreign policy circles. With Livana's entry to the World Forum last year, and then the arriving foreign companies, not to mention a foreign military base constructed in the heart of Livana, one wonders where does the People's Coalition is carrying Livana to. What future entails this sudden change of foreign policy, that the government is willing to make a such radical change?

I can argue that Foreign Minister Staunton is very crucial for this pivot. Her academic papers during her study at Calmin Social Institute showed that she has a rather liberal perspective on foreign policy. In this perspective, scholars argued that conflict can be avoided through economic interdependence, the spread of democracy, and also with the establishment of an international institution/regime which oversees some international norms. This does explain the more active approach that the government has made in international relations for the last two years. But the establishment of the Sallodesian Base conflicted with this, unless of course, she also believed in the opposing realist approach to international relations, which saw the world as anarchic, and that only through a balance of power can peace be maintained. This can be achieved, among other ways, by bandwagoning; uniting one's nation with a coalition or a nation with huge power and influence. Of course, the trade-off will be the nation's own sovereignty. In the end, though, the people only request one thing from the government's foreign policy and the government should always endeavor to provide this at any given chance; perpetual peace.
