So polls close in about 3 hours, and the first indicative results will be in by 10pm (about 5 hours from now).

I won't make any other predictions, except for the fact that the opposition parties, in particular the two dominant ones, the Workers Party and Singapore Democratic Party, are expected to increase/gain representation in Parliament, in part due to the poor showing by the ruling party this election.

So, what's the status?

The sample count results indicate a large, almost unexpected swing to the incumbent party. Still, I'd like to remain somewhat optimistic and see how things shape up later tonight when the actual results are announced.

Singapore may have became a sovereign nation against the will of its people, but it has largely turned out for the better, as compared to the situation that is confronting our neighbours up north in Malaysia.

It is despite our independence being involuntary, that our forefathers have set out ideals that our country will pursue, as laid out in the Proclamation of Singapore, issued on 9 August 1965.

And while I am not in favour of the state of politics in the country now, being that of a dominant-party state, it cannot be denied that it is as a result of the eminent leadership in the early years of Singapore's independence, that has shaped what was once a sleepy fishing village, into the developed, prosperous nation that it is today. To that end, whatever our political inclinations may be, I ask that we respect my nation's history.
Awe I have a right to my own option just as you do. The fact is it's a small city not a country (though it does have a large population than my country Happywide) I never have classed city-states as a country that's just who I am and the fact that the people didn't want it to be a country is another reason I don't see why it's a country. That and it's basically a one party state.

Ahem...

Singapore is a nation. In fact, it has been so successful that its GDP surpasses Malaysia's, the b*tch who abandoned Singapore the nation that expelled Singapore.

It has control of its territory and has one of the best militaries in the region.

I admire that nation because of that. Its prosperity seems like a miracle to me. Just like Monaco's and Luxembourg's prosperities. Just because a nation is a city-state or just too small does not mean they can't prosper too.

I will not be staying up any longer to monitor the election results, but there is an 11% swing (at this point in time) towards the incumbent People's Action Party (PAP). The Opposition has lost one single member constituency seat that they held before the election to the PAP.

The huge rally for the WP...

Maybe Singapore really is a one-party state?

I know what you mean. It saddens me that the people who go for the rally will not necessarily vote for the party. It's just morally wrong, imo, to betray a party like that.

As it now stands, only one constituency remains. The opposition has a slight lead, but the difference between the parties is within the 2% recount margin, so a recount is under way.

As it stands, it's 83 seats to the PAP, and 6 to the WP Opposition
