Basic overview: Erinor is an ancient nation, born out of the indigenous cultures of the Western Continent’s northwestern rainforest and shaped by the mountains, which hemmed it in and isolated it from other influences for many years, and the river which fed its life and united mountain, forest and sea.
The important of the mountains and the forest to Erinoran development cannot be overstated.  They were the blessings the early people first received and the hardships they had to endure.  The black and green squares which form the main part of the Erinoran flag are depictions of these, the environment which has brought the nation much prosperity, but also much pain.

The third part of the flag is more controversial and is, indeed, a disputed issue between the majority Erinoran population and the minority Serevans who live mainly along the northern coastline and on the island of Sereva, which was only recently designated an autonomous region.  The Serevans see it as a depiction of the violence which led to their people, who once populated most of the coastal regions of the Erinoran basin, to be pushed to the extremes of the land and be excluded from much of the modern-day nation’s culture.  This would seem a good reason to remove the sword from the national flag.  To the Erinorans, however  the white sword represents Anturin Sicaren, the crystal sword, a central feature of Erinoran legend and a key part of the official religion of Erinor, Revara.

Revara, meaning ‘the dream’ in Erinoran, is a pantheistic religion based upon a belief that the world as we know it is the creation of a pantheon of figures known as Revanim, or Dreamers.  The Dreamers - almost certainly mythical versions of ancient pioneers who shapes the mountain terraces and tamed the rainforest to allow the Erinoran tribes to grow and develop - are believed to have shaped the world by the power of their own imaginations.  Anturin Sicaren, then was a weapon forged from the crystalline minerals of the mountains by the king of the Dreamers, Ratyano, to defeat the evils brought into the world by the dreams of mortals.  Followers of Revara believe that when the age of the Dreamers ended, Ratyano led the Dreamers away from the world to guard it from without, so that humankind only had to contend with the evils they had already imagined and allowing them to experience the hope of victory.  Erinea, the Erinoran name for their own land, literally means hope. It is no surprise then, that having the symbol of their religion and of divine protection is extremely important to those Erinorans who follow Revara and even those who are not devout consider it an important part of the national culture.

The Serevan population, on the other hand, is majority Buddhist, having converted from an older, animistic religion to Buddhism during their early encounters with explorers of the colonial era.  That foreign powers never settled in Erinor is, most likely, in large part due to the welcoming efforts of the Serevan people, who integrated and traded with foreigners, whilst making it clear that their land was their own.  This led to a kind of respect developing for these people and, as long as they were willing to share Erinor’s rich resources, it was not considered worth the effort to mount any military campaigns into the Erinoran basin.

Some of the Serevans’ ancient practices still remain, particularly on the island of Sereva itself, giving Serevan Buddhism a unique flavour.  However, it is some of those unique elements which have kept them in almost constant conflict with the Erinorans for hundreds of years.  The Serevan name for their land - now reduced, officially, to a single island, although sometimes used by the Serevans themselves for the whole of the area they now inhabit, or even for the coastal regions they once settled - comes from a phrase that means ‘the waking’, or literally, ‘the being out of the dream’.  It is an expression of the Serevans’ sense of being rooted in reality, but may also speak of some ancient origin to both religions, with the two sides taking clearly opposing viewpoints which separated their cultures and languages forever.  Whilst archaeologist, anthropologists and linguists continue to debate such theories, one thing is clear, the tensions between the Serevan minority and the Erinoran majority remain strong, and, even after the recent declaration of autonomy to the island of Sereva, there are many Serevans both on and offshore who want to see a completely separate Serevan republic comprising the island of Sereva and the northern coastline of Erinor.  Small scale sectarian violence is common and there are fears of a return to the terrorist bombings of the mid-20th century, especially amid the current War on Terror gripping much of the rest of the world.

As a small nation, Erinor has tended to stay out of the larger world of international politics, keeping the number of its embassies small and keeping its trade negotiations limited to nations of similar size and influence.  In an attempt to change this, however, he newly inaugurated First, Yena Yamera-Hyudo, the first woman to hold the position, has begun to reach out to some of the large powers in the South Pacific, with an aim to expanding the trade opportunities for Erinor’s valuable resources, whilst also seeking protection from the increasing chaos of the times.

This decision has already proven unpopular in some quarters, especially amongst devout followers of Revara, who believe that the greater the outside influence on Erinor, the harder it will be to keep the worst aspects of human nature out of the country.

Pretty much everything above is up for question and debate.  Please let me know what you think and whether there are any changes you would suggest in terms of believability, logic, etc., or for how Erinor might integrate into the RP as it stands at the moment.  I look forward to reading your thoughts.

Updated: Corrected the spelling of Urasi to include its endings and, more importantly, added details of the Erinoran currency (the Sicara)

Updated to include the motto, which I think I've actually finalised and the national animal, which might prove to be a surprise to some, not least because I haven't mentioned it at all, yet...

Maybe I should look where on the map Erinor is because I was thinking of having Faloch colonial regions that Falochland later lost.

Erinor is in the North West of the North-western Continent. It has never been a colonial territory, however.
