Dear Elder Sisian,

Please excuse the informal e-mail, but I believed that you would receive it more warmly than a more formal diplomatic approach.

The reason for the e-mail is that it has come to our attention that it has been one hundred and fifty years to the day since the publishing of the attached article in our national newspaper, Anturin Vrassad, and thus, arguably, the beginning of what became known here in Erinor as 'The Imkitopian Scandal', an event which has, sadly, left our nations out of touch for a century and a half.

It is the opinion of this government that one hundred and fifty years is much too long a time for two nations with as strong a connection as ours to hold onto a grudge and we believe that our current, progressive agenda is much more in line with the kind of thinking that has set Imkitopia apart from the majority of nations in the South Pacific all these years.  We have certainly come a long way since 1866!

Please, read the newspaper scan attached as a reminder of the innocent start of our nation's connection and then perhaps we might agree to a resumption of diplomatic relations.  We would be very pleased to host an Imkitopian embassy in Vallano Parlid, for example.

Yours,

Sirea Fasya-Arkhando, Sityara Jukhirs evendem.

Paradise Lost: Acclaimed Naturalist Finds Erinoran Link to Imkitopia

By Fasyo Yena-Fasyo, 28th May, 1866.

There can be no doubt amongst the well-read gentlemen-philosophers of Ciria that this has been a century of startling discoveries about the natural world and the place of mankind within it.  Recent reports about the evolution of mankind and the movement of the continents have been as unexpected as they have been controversial, with the Amlassar Revarad declaring all such discoveries as 'inconsistent with the revelations of the Revanim' and, consequently, heresy.  More open-minded thinkers, however, have welcomed these theories and have even begun to extrapolate from them the possible origins of our own, sacred nation.

One such gentleman is Marcoro syus'si Otaro elyareo.  The third son of a minor Marcoro, Otaro elyareo has turned his energies towards naturalism and, especially, to the understanding of what some are now calling 'the human animal'.  In seeking to determine the origins of human populations, according to the still-unproven theory of evolution, the Marcoro syus'si has stumbled upon something he believes will enrich Erinor's culture as much as it will enlighten its understanding.

Otaro elyareo's theory proposes that the so-called Serevo-Erinoran peoples migrated to this continent from the North Eastern Continent via the chain of islands and archipelagos known as the Rainbow Islands.  The final detail which led him to believe that his might truly be the case, however, was his discovery of the similarity in culture and some racial features in the peoples living in the archipelago of Imkitopia.  Imkitopia is a mostly isolated series of lush, jungle-covered islands ruled over by a beautiful, exotic Queen chosen through an obscure religious ceremony, but Otaro elyareo says that there are cultural similarities which demand further investigation.

"These Imkitopians might be our long lost cousins!" he says in his report, published just two weeks ago in the Erinoran Journal of Natural Sciences.  "We owe it to science and to ourselves to investigate this connection further."

Whilst it may seem that this is a case of one naturalist seeking to fulfill his fantasies of adventure, he's certainly not the only one interested and a team of naturalists and historians and investigating his claims closer, whilst King Durro adareo IX, known for his passionate patronage of the natural scientists, has expressed a desire to open up diplomacy with the island nation.  Whether Erinorans and Imkitopians are really related is yet to be proven, but it seems that we shall be learning a great deal more about one another in the weeks and months to come.

Dear Sityara Fasya-Arkhando,

I would like to start by thanking you for reaching out to us on the anniversary of such an interesting point of our shared history. The newspaper clipping was a wonderfully charming reminder of the potential partnership we had (and can hopefully revisit) all those years ago before the mutual unpleasantness.

The ‘Erinoran Event’ as it has become popularly known as in Imkitopian history has indeed been the source of much unnecessary silence and tension between our nations for far too long and I believe we are all in agreement that we have much to gain from better diplomatic relations with one another.
We believe your invitation to apply for an embassy sounds like a great start so I have taken the necessary steps to begin the official process here in Imkitopia, your embassy programme should be hearing from us soon.

After convening the Royal Courts and having a particularly insightful discussion on the subject of 1866 with our head of Historical Preservation, Mrs Carila Dealyhe, I was surprised to learn that many of our official records from the time are patchy and widely discredited at best due to attempts to quell the reactions of the populace at the time. Carila has stated that there may be more detailed, untampered records in the Royal archives and has assured me that she will be personally combing through them for any relevant information on the subject which we will of course be willing to share with Erinor should all things go well.
I have also been in communication with the Queen’s personal assistant, who has informed me that her royal highness herself has also taken a personal interest in the events surrounding her predecessor, Imkihca XXI’s reign and links to Erinor in recent weeks and so is particularly supportive of this endeavour.

I would once again like to thank you for extending this invitation to Imkitopia. We very much look forward to working on this long overdue reconciliation and collaboration with Erinor and will be contacting you again once an ambassador has been selected and an embassy has been issued to further discuss the best way for both nations to approach such a delicate issue.

Regards,

Miho Sisian

Dear Elder Sisian,

Thank you for replying so soon and for sending your embassy request as suggested.  Hopefully, by now you have received a response from Tesa, my assistant.  We are really looking forward to seeing your representatives in no.13.

I'm glad, too, that you are as interested in the details of the events of 1866 as we are.  It was actually a member of the National Museum, not far from the Mena Parlid here in Ciria, who first alerted us to the treasure trove of old newspaper clippings and other documents related to the 'scandal' a few weeks ago and, in investigating them we realised that it would be a grave error not to reach out to you and try to put all that behind us, even as we bring it into the light.

I'm sure you're aware that King Durro adareo X issued a decree upon his coronation, that no one be allowed to discuss the events that had led to his brother's abdication and, whilst it was never fully enforced, it has meant that much that went on that year has been kept from the public eye for a very long time.  The decree was, technically, rescinded after the 1927 revolution, since it had never passed through parliament, but the Conservatives and the Marcorar remained influential enough to ensure that all these documents remained under lock and key.  We at the Court of Foreign Affairs may be the first to read some of these for over a century!

Since you speak of further efforts to bring these events to light, and of your Queen's interest in the project, we were wondering if you might like to work with us on an exhibition to allow the public to explore the tentative relations, and subsequent errors of the past, whilst also looking to what brought our two nations together in the first place and a look to what might be achieved in the future - a sort of undoing of the Imkitopia Exhibition of 1866, if you will.

We look forward to hearing your reply,

Warmest regards,

Sirea Fasya-Arkhando, Sityara Jukhirs evendem.

P.S. Please find attached another article we were just reading.  Following the events this way adds a certain element of intrigue, doesn't it?

King to Make Historic Royal Visit to Island Paradise.

By Fasyo Yeno-Fasyo, 12th June, 1866.

Following the theory, recently proposed by naturalist Otaro elyareo, that the people of Erinor and the people of the Imkitopian archipelago are, in fact, distantly related, our King, His Majesty Durro adareo IX, has announced that he plans to visit the Queendom of Imkitopia as a guest of Queen Imkihca XXI within the next few weeks.

Since his coronation four years ago this summer, the King has made several important visits to neighbouring countries, but it is no surprise to those close to His Majesty that he wishes to travel further afield. Durro adareo IX takes very much after his father, after all, and it seems the former King's tragic death on the slopes of Khardo aruteo has not deterred his son from being just as adventurous and, some would say (though it is certainly not the opinion of this journal), reckless.

Members of the Liberal government and many other Marcorar of the Khasa Marcoral Arutyarcad are declaring this ‘an historic moment in the history of the Kingdom’s international relations’, although key figures of the opposition, including Sityaro sacneo Jukhirs evendem, Yeno nwikheo, are concerned about the potential for the nature of a relationship between Erinor and a self-proclaimed ‘Queendom’ to be less than salubrious.

In a statement made to Anturin Vrassad, Yeno nwikheo called the King's decision to make the journey, “reckless and irresponsible”.

“This visit will set a dangerous precedent,” he continued. “If the King makes the trip as intended he risks legitimising a form of government that flies in the face of Erinoran tradition and of the will of the Revanim themselves! Do we need to remind everyone of the chaos caused by the reign of our only ruling Queen, Yamera area?”

The palace had not commented on the political debate but is expected to make an official announcement about the visit later this week, with a full itinerary of the trip to be published shortly afterwards.
