BREAKING: Huawan's Zhou Youguang, father of Pinyin writing system, dies aged 111
[Image: 120405_t91sy_zhou-youguang_sn635.jpg]
The country mourns as renowned Peonic linguist Zhou Youguang, The father of the writing system that turns Mandarin characters into words using letters from the Roman alphabet, has died aged 111.

The MienFoo publishing house, which published several of Zhou's books in recent years, confirmed Zhou's death. He died in Capital Lián on a Saturday a day after his birthday,

Honorable Linguist Zhou and a number of linguists spent three years developing the Pinyin system in the 1950s. It changed the way the language was taught and helped raise literacy rates.

Born in Zhàn of East Huawan on January 13 1906, Zhou was previously an economist working on the Peonic Central Stock Exchange before becoming a linguist. In the 1950s, he chaired the committee which came up with Pinyin, a system to make it easier to transcribe Mandarin characters using the western alphabet.

"We spent three years developing Pinyin. People made fun of us, joking that it had taken us a long time to deal with just 26 letters," he told the Post in a 2012 documentary.

Before the writing style was developed, A staggering 70% of the Peonic people could not read, now a staggering 98% can.

“Partly the reason why is due to location.” Explained Honorable Zhou in the 2012 documentary, “the study of language and literacy may be prominent in the central region, but the mountain regions of the north and the far west are underdeveloped at the time.”

He said the speed of the popularization of Pinyin was amazing, used not only in education but also industry and commerce. It became a key to understanding Peonic culture, and has evolved into a bridge linking the country together and to the whole world.

He and his team has been recognized for their contribution to Peonic culture, and are awarded The Order of White Milk and Red Peony, one of the highest awards given to those who have made outstanding contributions to the economic and social progress of the Peocracy.

With his death, the country mourns a loss that the flag shall be placed half masted. The Honorable Peony herself along with the royal ministry is reported to come to the funeral and burial of Peonic linguist Zhou Youguang.

The Peony in the Lunar New Year's address

Written by: Zheng Wei Bin Hassar, Chief Correspondent
Translated by: Molly Liu, Senior Translator

A nationwide broadcast was made by The Peony in the eve of the Spring Festival, below is her speech translated to english.

“Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh, ladies and gentlemen of the royal court, the royal service and the people of the peocracy. Today we mark one of the fundamental days of the Peocracy, the Spring Festival, the Lunar New Year, 春節, the year’s start.

We are amongst the mOurs is a great nation. Throughout more than five thousand years of evolution as a civilization, the Peonic nation has made indelible contribution to the progress of human civilization.

Of course, the mightiest trees would still feel the crashing winds, for Huawan endured untold hardships and sufferings, and its survival hung in the balance. Since its founding, the Peocracy has made great sacrifices and forged ahead against all odds. It has rallied and led the people in transforming the poor and backward old dynasty into an increasingly prosperous and powerful new country, thus reblooming a completely new horizon for the great renewal of the nation.

Our responsibility now is to rally and lead the entire country in taking over the relay baton passed on to us by history, and in making continued efforts to achieve the great renewal of the Peocracy, make Huawan’s roots and branches firm in the vast south pacifican region, and insyaallah, make even greater contributions to world kind. Alhamdulilah, for during the long course of history, the Paeonisians have, working with diligence, bravery, discipline and wisdom, created a beautiful homeland where all ethnic groups live in harmony, and developed a great and dynamic culture.

Our people have an ardent love for life. They wish to have better education, more stable jobs, more income, greater social security, better medical and health care, improved housing conditions, and a better environment. They want their children to have sound growth, have good jobs and lead a more enjoyable life. To meet their desire for a happy life is our mission. It is only hard work that creates all happiness in the world.

All happiness in the world comes by the sweat in one’s brow. Therefore fulfill our responsibility, we will rally the people of all ethnic groups in Huawan in making continued efforts to free up our minds, carry out reform and opening up, further release and develop the productive forces, work hard to resolve the difficulties the people face in both work and life, and unwaveringly pursue common prosperity.

The Royal Palace is dedicated to serving the people. It has led the people in making world-renowned achievements, and we have every reason to take pride in these achievements. But we are not complacent, and we will never rest on our laurels. Under the new conditions, our country faces many severe challenges, and there are also many pressing problems within the country that need to be resolved, particularly corruption, bigotry, misinformation and the overexploitation of nature.

We must make every effort to solve these problems. The whole country must stay on full alert. To address these problems, we must first of all conduct ourselves honorably. Our responsibility is to work with to uphold the principle that the country should supervise its own conduct and run itself with strict discipline, effectively solve major problems in the Peocracy, improve our conduct, and maintain close ties with the people.

Alhamdulilah we are well aware that the capability of one individual is limited. But when we are united as one, we will create an awesome power and we can certainly overcome all difficulties. One can only work for a limited period of time, but there is no limit to serving the people with dedication. Our responsibility is weightier than the Crystal Summits, and our road ahead is a long one.

We must always be of the same mind with the people and share the same destiny with them, and we must work together with them and diligently for the public good so as to live up to the expectations of both history and the people.
Just as the Peocracy needs to learn more about the world, so does the world need to learn more about the Peocracy. I personally hope that you will continue your efforts to deepen mutual understanding between us and the world. Jazakamullah Khayran.

Here's to another blossoming new year, may the flowers bloom forevermore, 恭喜发财!"

World-first trial shows improving diet can treat major depression
[Image: BJc6M3Pl.jpg]
Written by: Zheng Wei Bin Hassar, Chief Correspondent
Translated by: Molly Liu, Senior Translator

A new trial from Lotus University has shown for the first time that improving diet quality can treat major depression.

Director of Lotu's Food and Mood Centre Professor Felisa Lim said the results of her team's new study offered a possible new treatment approach to depression, one of the world's most prevalent and costly medical disorders.

"We've known for some time that there is a clear association between the quality of people's diets and their risk for depression," Professor Lim said.

"This is the case across countries, cultures and age groups, with healthy diets associated with reduced risk, and unhealthy diets associated with increased risk for depression.

"However, this is the first randomised controlled trial to directly test whether improving diet quality can actually treat clinical depression".

In the study, adults with major depressive disorder were recruited and randomly assigned to receive either social support, which is known to be helpful for people with depression, or support from a clinical dietitian, over a three-month period.

The dietary group received information and assistance to improve the quality of their current diets, with a focus on increasing the consumption of vegetables, fruits, wholegrains, legumes, fish, lean red meats, olive oil and nuts, while reducing their consumption of unhealthy 'extras' foods, such as sweets, refined cereals, fried food, fast-food, processed meats and sugary drinks.

The results of the study, published in the international journal South Pacific Medicine, showed that participants in the dietary intervention group had a much greater reduction in their depressive symptoms over the three-month period, compared to those in the social support group.

At the end of the trial, a third of those in the dietary support group met criteria for remission of major depression, compared to 8 percent of those in the social support group.

"These results were not explained by changes in physical activity or body weight, but were closely related to the extent of dietary change," Professor Lim said.

"Those who adhered more closely to the dietary program experienced the greatest benefit to their depression symptoms."

Professor Lim, who is president of the Peonic Society for Nutritional Psychiatry Research, said the findings offered an important new strategy for the treatment of depression.

"Mental disorders account for the leading cause of disability worldwide, with depression accounting for the large proportion of that burden," she said.

"While approximately half of sufferers are helped by currently available medical and psychological therapies, new treatment options for depression are urgently needed.

"Importantly, depression also increases the risk of and, in turn, is also increased by common physical illnesses such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Successfully improving the quality of patients' diets would also benefit these illnesses."

The study suggests the new possibility of adding clinical dieticians to mental health care teams and making dietitian support available to those experiencing depression.

"It also supports the previous extensive research from human population studies and animal research suggesting that diet is a key determinant of mental and brain health," Professor Lim said.

Saudi police foil terror attempt to burn Kaaba in Mecca

RIYADH, Feb. 7 (LYPost) -- Saudi police have foiled an attempt by a suspected extremist to burn Kaaba in the grand mosque of Mecca, the most valued site among Muslims, Sabq online newspaper reported on Tuesday.

An eyewitness told the news portal that he saw the man pouring gasoline at the black clothes covering the Kaaba, in which he alerted the police at the mosque and they arrested the man.

No official information was released, while the newspaper confirmed that the incident occurred at 23:11 local time on Monday (2011 GMT). It posted a video of the incident that was circulated online.

Although the real intention of the man wasn't clear until now, worshiping places have been targeted by Islamic State (IS) militant groups in recent years. Many worshipers lost their lives in such attacks.

In May 2016, Saudi police prevented a catastrophe by foiling a suicide bomber from reaching the Prophet's mosque in Medina, leaving the attacker and four police personnel killed, 5 others injured.

Profile: Han Xu, Forensic expert who speaks for the dead

Written by: Mei Fikri-Trang, Chief Correspondent

Han Xu in her formal uniform.

On the evening of Feb 27, Han Xu was on her way to the cinema before her phone buzzed. The call was from the local police bureau.

A 60-year-old man was found dead at a hotel. Suspecting it was murder, police immediately called Han Xu, a f orensic expert, for an on-the-spot investigation.

It took Han about half-an-hour to finish her work professionally and extract evidence.

Han, 28, graduated from the Lotus University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2013. She planned to work at a hospital where she interned in Lián, but by chance, she learned about an opportunity to become a legal medical examiner at the Royal Peonic Police Academy of Huawan.

Han has always looked up to her father, who was a policeman, since she was a little girl. She applied to get into the course in the Northeast and was admitted.

After graduating in October 2015, she came to capital Lián to work as a forensic expert.

Han said her job has also made her treasure time and life more. Her mornings start with a jog around the city, and after breakfast, she adjusts her uniform on the mirror of the lift of her apartment and carries her forensic gear placed neatly in a box.

She would then respond to a call if the police requested for her, or would be standing by in her office at Central Lián. She would spend most of her time examining the bodies of the dead and giving her thorough examination before sending them along to their loved ones.

Han said she was not scared of dead bodies because of her medical training background, though sometimes she finds it hard to read the death notices and see relatives crying.

Besides on-site investigations, one major part of her work is to give a detailed explanation of the cause of death to grieving relatives, as they are more inclined to accept the reality then.

"Corpses don't talk, but we can speak for them," Han said. She has investigated over 100 death scenes in the past year and a half, and is one of the most prominent forensic doctors in the capital.

Primed for Poetry

Written by: Zheng Wei Bin Hassar, Chief Correspondent

As tens of millions marvel at a 16-year-old's prowess with verse and poetry, questions are raised about where country is getting it wrong in teaching culture, and which direction is better for further progress.

Soon after the program “Rendezvous With Peonic Poetry” returned to television screens two months ago, it was pulling in the kinds of audiences that you would normally only associate with a top-notch reality TV show.

[Image: 58f047a8-11f2-4bbb-9537-b075ab546618.jpeg]
Indeed, after its 10-episode run during the Spring Festival period, the Lotus Channel Network show's producers were able to boast that it had attracted an aggregate of more than 1.2 billion viewers worldwide.

Those figures are all the more astonishing given the program's very modest aims: to encourage the public "to appreciate classic Peonic poetry, look to their cultural roots and enjoy the beauty of life".

It had aired for the first time a year earlier, and no sooner had it returned than it seemed almost everyone in the country was talking about the program, which invites poetry lovers to vie with each other to see who knows the most about classic Peonic poetry.

By the end of the series, messages about it on Yoo!, the Huawan version of Stream, had been a success, read more than 45 million times, and videos from the program had received nearly 6 million clicks online, Lotus Channel Network claims.

Helping drive the program's popularity was Wu Yishu, 16, a high school student from Lián who made her way to the finals, and in doing so captivated millions with knowledge of classic Peonic poetry that she combined with calmness, elegance and a razor-sharp mind.

Eventually Wu would be the outright winner, beating dozens of rivals of various age groups, including her ultimate opponent, a poetry magazine editor.

"The program has enhanced our appreciation of the beauty of classic poetry and traditional culture," says Peonic Cultural Minister Wen Chen, 30, adding that many of his entourage were as enamored of the program as he was.

Huawan will select its second batch of astronauts this year for its solo manned space exploration plan, according to Lang Yiwei, Director of Huawan’s Space Program as well as the first Peonic astronaut to go into space.

"The new batch will have 10 to 12 astronauts, including around four females," Lang said.

Huawan has already completed the first two steps in the three-step process under the Knightisian Alliance: sending manned spacecraft into space; carrying out extravehicular activities and docking moves and establishing space labs. The third step is to establish long-term manned space station along with the Knightisian Space Alliance. The second batch however, shall be the only time in which the launch shall be purely done in Peonic Soil.

“Huawan has finally completed the experiments and tests on the manned space lab missions, we have seen our errors and have mended it.” Lang said.

During the third step to build the space station, more scientific experiments as well as collaboration with the Knightisian Space Alliance will be carried out, requiring astronauts to have more expertise, Lang said.

“Beforehand Astronauts in the first batch were required to have bachelor's degrees and pilots' license. But now, new astronauts will focus on the engineering side. They should have master's degrees to work as engineers and researchers," Lang said.

New astronauts might face lower physical standards set for past astronauts in selection and training, but they should have more stable mental endurance, allowing them to work in a small place with heavy work for a long period, Yang said. The checks on chronic disease will be stricter.

"People who have suffered fractures have no chance. The appendicitis surgery might be tolerable, but any surgery on the chest is unacceptable. The nearsighted people also have no chance because the extreme pressure while entering the space will easily cause retinal detachment," Lang said.

Huawan will launch Long Walk 4A carrier rocket into space in 2019, and after that, the rocket will help carry the core module of Huawan’s space station into space, as per agreement with the Knightisian Federation and backing from the Montron Pact and the Arasian Federation. Other spacecrafts will be launched soon after that.

Eid Mubarak

Written by: Zheng Wei Bin Hassar, Chief Correspondent
Translated by: Molly Liu, Senior Translator

(Ramadhan prayer before the festival)
Eid celebrations in Huawan are going full force, festivities across the streets since dawn and the morning prayer. With Paeonisians across the country rejoining their families and have a taste on banquets with enormous portions of home grown food. The streets are filled with festivals and woks filled with curry, The Peony had indeed ordered several roads to be closed in order to be filled with the festivals.

(A woman offering grapes and other fruits to people exiting the mosque)
Peonic eid is one of the most joyous moments experienced in the country by all regardless of race, sex and religion, with taoist monks even coming to taste the communal meal. The billion Tiol event is heavily consumptive, and chaotic to prepare. With even the military joining the police force in keeping the streets safe and secure, and street cleaners hoping that days worth of making the streets spotless would retain its cleanliness for quite some time.

(A hawker making stir fry in a huge wok)
Hawkers and Cooks had also stocked enough food for the event, as the Peonic state stocks tonnes of beef, bread, spices and chicken especially for this day alone. Prices of food is in an all time high with enormous demands from the community, nearing the capped price set by the Royal Palace. Clothes, souvenirs, toys and other products are also high, with PSE, the Regional Stock Exchange, recording all time increases of Peonic stock prices.

(Prayer in Alamin Grand Mosque in Lián)
While it seems to be all happy, civil servants are completely overwhelmed by the demands and the work in Eid. Other than the police force putting out most of its reserves for this day, Peonic hospitals and care centers, the jewel of the nation, have been enduring this day for years. Hectic as the emergency rooms are filled with patients in sudden need of help. It is especially hectic in Lián, hospitals of the capital are compeltely overwhelmed that they require several doctors to exit the festivities to help out, even The Peony, who had decided to celebrate Eid in her manor, to be recorded riding a motorcycle in a long white coat rushing to the hospital to help out.

(A woman after Eid prayer)
Despite the hectic days, the majority of them did not mind the extra work, for indeed, in this holy month, their patience has been tested far worse. In the end, everyone could enjoy the eid celebrations, especially the children and teenagers, where there’s a tradition of providing tiny envelopes of money to children. Here are several interviews from various members of society.

“The trains were indeed crowded and it was a challenge going back home, but it was worth it!”

“Happy Eid Mubarak everyone!”

“To see my mother once more from the service.”

“My family is here! Eid Mubarak!”

“Well sure, family is nice, but I need the money for the summer game sales.”

“New dresses, new clothes, great!”

“The cookies are sweet!”

“I’m going to eat so much the past five days..”

“Sweet! So many sweet meals!”

“I love seeing their smiles, my smiles aren’t there anymore.”

“Shhh, I’m avoiding questions about my relationship.”

“What a festival to remember, Taqabalallahu Minna Wa Minkum.”

We of the LuoYang Post say “Taqabalallahu minna wa minkum, minal aidin wal faizin, Eid Mubarak!”

Fly High, Ceo Bird! Huawan Intercontinental turns 70

Written by: Chang Chong Chen, Senior Correspondent
Translated by: Katya Cho, Junior Translator

(Airshow in terminal 2 of Mangsten International Airport in Lián)

A week long celebration is underway in the 2nd terminal of Mangsten International Airport, it is a unique occasion to celebrate the 70th birthday of the Peocracy's very own national carrier, the Huawan Intercontinental. This is a special exposé of the national carrier.

(Old Logo of Huawan Intercontinental, 1947-1990)
First established on June 12th 1947 and inaugurated by The Peony, Mei Yan, on July 12th 70 years ago. It was the largest air carrier in the nation, and one of the only air carriers that service outside the Peonic borders in its period of seclusion and autarky. Starting from just 30 crew members, now has grown to a whopping 2000 of both ground and air crew members.

The importance of its birthday is, not only due to its proud national carrier status, but because thIs carrier became the pioneer of the Peonic aviation industry, and also enabled the growth of the Mangsten International airport, which was once a lowly airfield next to paddy fields.

(Old Photo of a stewardess in the 1960's)
When it was first established, stewardesses would use Peonic traditional dresses, the Hanfu. Whilst stewards would wear the male variation of the Hanfu. Other attempts to create a cultural image of the national carrier include: onboard serving of Linic Duck and Mantou, providing origami tutorial charts in the seat pockets, serving warm cha onboard, and decorating the interior to fit traditional clothing patterns.

(Current Huawan Intercontinental Stewardess uniform)
These days however, the airliner has modernized itself with a completely new image. One of which are the changing of uniforms, from the traditional yet high-maintenance Hanfu to the beige suit with a red hat that the stewardesses call "the breadroll" attached with a white scarf resembling a hijab, to reflect the strong islamic foundation of the country. First-class passengers are still serviced by stewardesses wearing the Hanfu, now uniformed rather than before. Male stewards wear a clean cut suit with a bright red tie and the pin of the airline's bird symbol.

(Huawan Intercontinental logo 1990 - Present)
The bird symbol was introduced in the 90's to replace the old peony flower logo, since then it has been the main symbol of the national carrier, and every crew member are needed to wear a pin of the bird. Those like flight attendants, pilots, receptionists and ticketing are given pins made of metal, the more senior the staff, the more expensive the materials are, with the most senior crew members fashioning platinum bird pins or diamond pins for first-class flight attendants. Special with the stewardess, whose pins are fashioned in their hats, carved into a round metal plate.

(Proud Huawan Intercontinental pilots)
Pilots of the national carrier received rigorous training, what sets it different from other airliners is that Peonic pilots are incredibly disciplined, succinct, precise and punctual. It is not a mystery, that Huawan Intercontinental is considered one of the most punctual airliners in the world, one to not be too early nor too late. Ranks follow international standards, however their uniforms differ between helicopter pilots and airplane pilots, with helicopter pilots receiving a slightly lighter suit than their airplane comrades. The same level of discipline are also set towards all crew members, with punctuality and ethical values held dear.

(Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners in the Boeing webpage)
The national carrier houses several airplanes and helicopters, with 2 Boeing 747-8’s, 8 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners. Used for both intercontinental flights, usually towards Knightisian, Arasian, North Pacifican, Albion countries, all outside The South Pacific including the recently established Cooperation of FuYuan. A Kleinhardt K500 jet, manufactured by Zollern air company and air carrier, Kleinhardt Inc, are also used for intercontinental travels within The South Pacific, laying routes to Grovne, Imperium, Theron, Zadin, Castiana, Atlantis, Ciria, Karnetgrad, Alox, Kysa and Lidpointthwaithe-with-jump-minstersome.

(CKJ900S, the first Peonic made jetliner)
The real pride of the Huawan Intercontinental lies in its exclusive usage of the CeoKlein Jet 900 “Swallow” (CKJ 900S), the first purely Peonic manufactured airplane with substantial backing from the Zollern government. The CKJ 900S usually flies for local routes as well as close routes towards Qvait, Rebeltopia, Kringalia and surrounding areas. However there are times in which the Swallow was used for international routes, even flaunting its ability to fly as far as Kysa.

(Details of Armada size, Tail Livery, Body Livery, and Logo)
The Peony herself frequented the use of the Swallow as her main method of transportation. Its great reliability, cost and speed enables it to become a tremendous asset for the national carrier. Several of the Swallow are also deployed in Giacarta, along with several Bell 525 helicopters for hard to reach areas in the mainland and the Cooperation.

Today, we mark the birthday of the national carrier, representing the LuoYang Post, we say, here’s to your 70th birthday, and may you prosper for another 70 or more.

Could early life physical exercise protect against age-related cognitive decline by creating a so-called cognitive reserve? A study in rodents investigates.
New research - the results of which have been published in the journal eNeuro - explores the effect of early life exercise on the cognitive health and neuronal activity of adult rats.
Researchers led by Professor Doctor Dennis Al-Kautsar, a professor of neuroscience at the White Oak Brain Center in 则水 (ZeShui), started from the hypothesis that the brain's cognitive reserve would protect against age-related memory loss.
The term cognitive reserve refers to the brain's ability to draw from the cognitively enhancing experiences it acquired during its youth in order to cope with cognitive decline in old age.

Cognitive reserve and hippocampal neurons
Education, physical exercise, and lifestyle are all believed to contribute to a solid cognitive reserve. Studies have shown that people who have a greater cognitive reserve can keep at bay the neurodegenerative damage that may come from diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's, or even a stroke.
Dr. Al-Kautsar and colleagues set out to examine the role of the cognitive reserve on the neurons found in rats' hippocampus - that is, a brain area involved in creating and retrieving explicit memories, as well as in spatial learning.
More specifically, the researchers wanted to examine the activity of the neurons that are generated during adulthood and compare it with the neuronal activity of the brain cells acquired during early development.
The second aim of the study was to examine the impact of intense early life exercise on the learning and memory of a "contextual fear response" in adulthood.
Contextual fear conditioning is a tool often used by behavioral neuroscientists to examine how an animal learns to predict painful or adverse events.
The hippocampus is known to be involved in contextual fear learning, and the formation of new neurons, or neurogenesis, in the hippocampus is thought to play a crucial role in the process.

Studying early life physical activity in rats
Dr. Al-Kautsar and colleagues examined two groups of 40 rats each. The first group was exposed to a running wheel for 6 weeks starting at the early age of 1 month, whereas the control group was simply kept in a standard cage without a running wheel for the same amount of time.
After 4 months - when the rodents were 6 to 7 months old - they were trained on a contextual fear conditioning task. Two weeks later, the researchers tested their memory of the contextual fear response.
The age of 6 to 7 months is believed to be the point at which rodents' brains start to build a cognitive reserve as a backup for cognitive damage later in life.
Dr. Al-Kautsar and team tested the contextual fear conditioning in three different contexts to gain information on the quality of the memories formed.
Additionally, the researchers used a standard technique called c-Fos-immunoreactivity to measure the neuronal activity of the brain cells born during adulthood in response to the contextual fear testing, and compare this activity with the neurons born during the developmental years.

Physical activity enhances neuronal activity
The scientists found that 6 weeks of early physical exercise had a long-term effect on the rats' ability to learn and memorize a fear response.
This type of learning depends on adult-born neurons, whose activity, the researchers found, was greater compared with that of developmentally born neurons.
Additionally, the neuronal activity of adult-born brain cells in the physically trained rats was also significantly greater compared with that of the neurons of rats who did not have access to a running wheel.
"The results reveal a long-term effect of early running on adult-born dentate granule neurons and a special role for adult-born neurons in contextual memory," the authors conclude, "in a manner that is consistent with the [cognitive] reserve hypothesis."

"The most striking result of this study is the effect of early-age running on memory-related neuronal activity. This is the first evidence of such a long-term effect and a confirmation of an animal model of cognitive reserve."

The findings in rodents suggest that in humans, exercise at a young age may stave off age-related cognitive impairment by creating a cognitive reserve.
This may help to protect against the neuronal damage and cognitive decline found in diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
Speaking to the Post about the implications of their findings, Dr. Al-Kautsar said, "Our findings apply to normal, healthy rats but there are possible implications to some diseases such as Alzheimer's on the basis of other studies showing that adult neurogenesis and cognitive reserve are affected in these diseases."
Dr. Al-Kautsar also spoke to the Post about the significance of his and his colleagues' research, saying, "Although the existence of cognitive reserve has been suspected in humans for decades, there were no animal studies to prove it rigorously."
"We have established an animal model for cognitive reserve. This [model] can be used in future studies to further dissect the mechanisms of how the cognitive reserve is induced."
