Ubesii: A Newcomer's Guide

Ubesii: A Prosperous Nation of Beauty, Diversity, and Peace

The Republic of Ubesii is one of the oldest nations in not only Naviscai, but the world as a whole. The foundation of modern Ubesii was laid in the year 1250 C.E. with the unification of the country by Seris Mokana, although the nation’s roots stretch even farther back, all the way to the early second century C.E., when many of the foundations of traditional Ubesian society were first established. These traditions, such as religion, clothing, architecture, cuisine, and philosophy, have survived numerous destructive wars, two occupations, and an attempted genocide in the twentieth century, as well as weathering the changing times and the growing cosmopolitanism of the country with remarkable longevity, leaving Ubesii with a culture distinctly and uniquely its own.

The Republic is remarkably diverse, with numerous ethnic groups, the largest of which being the Ubesians themselves, who themselves follow numerous different regional interpretations of traditional society, largely depending on their region and which clan dominated it in centuries past. The second largest ethnic group is the Tanisians, hailing from the island of Talis and the northeastern corner of the mainland. At one time the Tanisians ruled a vast maritime empire stretching across much of eastern Naviscai, including much of northern Ubesii, but were subjugated by the newly risen Ubesian Empire in the Thirteenth century. In the modern day, Tanis has been given some measure of home rule with the creation of the Tanisian Autonomous Republic. Tanisian culture shares many similarities with that of Ubesian, especially in terms of religion, and to a lesser extent language due to early Tanisian influences, but still stands starkly apart in most ways. The smallest ethnic groups in the country are made up of the five Tekarian ethnic groups, Barkanian, Nesconian, Kaperan, Tenerian, and Tonan who settled in Ubesii during the two occupations of the country by first the Kingdom of Barkan, and followed by the Dominion of Tekarai. While many, especially of Barkanian heritage, have adopted many aspects of Ubesian culture, other traditions, especially in terms of religion and cuisine, remain distinguishing points. While there remains some animosity and inequalities between some ethnic groups in Ubesii, the many cultures of the country largely exist and mix harmoniously, and the nation continues to work to move all of its people onto a more equal footing. You will seldom find a place as connected to its own history while also welcoming diversity and newcomers as this far-eastern nation.

The diversity and beauty of Ubesii’s natural environment is practically unique in all the world, with flora and fauna seen nowhere else, and existing in a diverse range of environments from soaring mountains to low shores that stretch across the north of the nation, to eastern Naviscai, which continues to stand as one of the most beautiful underwater environments in the world. Thanks to the dedication of the government to protecting the natural environment, these precious landscapes continue to provide incredible places to explore or find inspiration. The wildlife is incredible as well, with many unique species existing within only Ubesii, from the Isopod-like Arksha to the small and curious Ferai birds, and, of course, the Kiwi, the national animal of Ubesii.

This unique environment has, of course, had a strong impact on the uniqueness of the cuisine in Ubesii. While familiar staples such as rice and millet are of course largely produced here, the wider palette and ways of preparing food differ greatly from those of most others. Traditional dishes in Ubesii are often multi-purpose, and known for being extremely spicy, ranging from soups, to drinks, to currys, the most famous being fire soup, which has become more popular on the western continent in the past few years. Ubesian cuisine also has a reputation for incorporating ingredients that cause short-lived sensations from slight tingling in limbs to “butterflies” into many snacks and smaller dishes, although plenty are what one might consider more “standard” and friendly. By far what distinguishes, and tends to turn people from other nations off, from Ubesiian cuisine, is its incorporation of insects, isopods, and other bugs into many of their smaller dishes and snacks, and a small number of large national favorites. Nonetheless, they are loved locally, and to most who are willing to try they are largely considered delicious.

Despite its steel grip on the past and tradition, Ubesii has not slacked off in keeping up with modern society, maintaining a highly advanced system of trains and public transportation, as well as advanced medical facilities and one of the most advanced militaries in the world. The urban centers that dot the landscape, from Makala in the north to the port city of Kysa, one of the largest cities in the world, boast not only this diversity, industry, and ecological commitment, but also the stunning architecture, both historic and modern, that blends together seamlessly, and as such creates an urban landscape as diverse yet seamless as that of the nation itself. Modern fashions mixed with traditional styles have delivered Ubesii a bustling industry of apparel and textile design working to distinguish itself and break into the international marketplace. The nation also supports a growing information technology industry, while modern information technology is already pervasive and entrenched throughout in the daily lives of the people. As such, Ubesii stands poised to begin its movement into the international scene in this area in the coming years as well, which will likely bring more circulation and recognition of Ubesii’s unique contributions to areas such as literature, visual arts, music, and countless others to the rest of the world.

To gain a more in-depth knowledge of these and other aspects of Ubesii, see the guide below, or simply flip through and explore on your own!

Government and Politics

Still workin' on it.

The Parliament

Ubesii is, generally speaking, organized as a unitary parliamentary republic. The Assembly is organized into two houses, the General Assembly and the People's Council, which are presided over by the Xincha (Supreme Councillor) who is elected jointly by both houses. The General Assembly is made up of 100 assembly-people elected by the people every two years in an STV election, while the People's Council is made up of 20 elected officials from various minority groups in the country.

The Assembly is currently ruled by the People's Front, a coalition of socialist/communist parties including the Communist Party, Worker's Front Party, Green Party, and presided over by the Ubesian Socialist Party. The other two major coalitions in the government are the ultra-nationalist Ubesian Restoration Movement and the pro-capitalist Freedom Coalition.

NRP: National Restoration Party
NFP: National Freedom Party
GP: Green Party
WUF: Worker's United Front
UAP: Ubesii Ascension Party
NDP: New Democratic Party

FLP: Farmer-Labor Party
CP: Communist Party

The Justice System

In Ubesii the justice system is organized into a series of local courts with judges elected every four years unless they are removed by a popular vote. Any case that cannot be resolved in the local courts is moved up to the provincial courts, whose judges are also elected by the region as a whole. The highest level of the court system is the People's Court, whose judges are elected every four years by the provincial courts. It is the task of the courts to, of course, interpret the laws of the land and to enact them, with the People's Court holding the power to nullify laws and amendments passed by the assembly with a majority vote. The death penalty is illegal in Ubesii as well as prison labor. Ubesian justice focuses largely on corrective/rehabilitative justice following the logic that the vast majority of people who would end up breaking the law probably would have a reason for doing so that could be rectified by helping to correct any systems driving people into crime in the first place. As such, investigations into the felon's situation are carried out following arrests, and prisoners are usually placed under the care of social workers, doctors, and therapists depending on their situations and are allowed to return to society once their situation has been determined to have been rectified.

The Monarchy

Despite its claims to socialism, the Republic of Ubesii continues to hold onto the old monarchy, currently headed by Parkai (Emperor/Supreme Leader) Cyrus Mokana. Although the royal family retains no actual institutional political power, they remain a powerful symbol for the ultra-nationalist elements within the Republic, trying to strip away support for the socialists and communists currently in power by appealing to what is being called "Traditional Ubesian Socialism", also known as the state-run economy of the Imperial era.
