Fantasy Character RP.
#11

I did RP in a Dragon's Age setting for a few weeks during my time in TGW, and I enjoyed that. I'd love to revive the principal idea of that character. That being said, I should note that I'm by no means an RPer and therefore my input should be taken with a grain of salt.

I spent a few moments thinking about setting. I'm totally a Tolkienesque fantasy sort of guy, which is in many parts inspired by medieval Europe. From what's been written here so far, there is agreement with having some elements of that as well, but also about some mixing and matching. So I got to thinking - our regional theme is one of palm trees and beaches, and we are the South Pacific. There is alot of inspiration that can be drawn from polynesian cultures, and there are tons of those.

So, how about a setting with various islands where there is a culture conflict between (European-type) settlers from elsewhere as well as the (Polynesian-type) indigenous population - that solves the "one country, multiple countries" question, it means there will be elements of Tolkienesque high fantasy, and there is something more than that that can be used for inspiration, there's a built-in conflict people can draw on, etc.

I think we can conclude on the setting. We all want this to be something hybrid-like and stemming from our region's culture and values.

We can start on a map, work our way to worldbuilding of our own respective establishments and others, as well as have a central story that could be rp-ed as a character or as a nation. Using a D&D dice roll technique by the creator of the RP.

The size may be city states that have different values, or island archipelagos. Keep it small at first and improve from there. And One user can only make one city state and we can focus on that?

I would agree that it would probably be best to start out smaller and grow it from there. Specifically I would favor us starting out our characters in a single country, as Seraph said, “full of intrigue”, with a bit of influence from the other local groups we would end up exploring and interacting with later. At most I feel we should start out in an area of small polities, perhaps five at most. This of course doesn’t mean that we would have to create characters exclusively coming from this theoretical country, they could very well come from any of its neighbors, or even further away. I simply think that starting out smaller will also allow for more focus when we’re starting out, allowing the characters to hold their own against the world building as they solidify before expanding outwards.

In terms of setting, I would also prefer a hybrid theme veering away from the traditional European medieval high fantasy theme, although elements of it could still exist for those of us that want it, perhaps as Roavin suggested as an outside group that would not only provide diversity and create interesting dynamics, but also give an impetus for expanding the world outwards when it comes time for that. I also like the suggestion of basing our starting area’s culture on that of our regional theme and with some influences from polynesian cultures, although I don’t ultimately think I lean in any particular direction on what I would prefer. I’m fine with most things so long as it’s sufficiently original in some way. Which I guess means that I am for the archipelago idea.

Another thing I think should be considered is how the climate and the weather should work in this world. While in the way this is going with the tropical archipelago theme it would likely have certain aspects such as having a somewhat narrow, oceanic climate, is it otherwise much like here on Earth, or is it partially or even wholly fantastical/magical? Is it a world of extremes, or perhaps a world largely like our own, but with areas both large and small where nature acts...differently? Determining this could potentially have a large effect on the ways that the societies, cultures, technology, and even foundational aspects of the world’s fantasy will exist, and could create interesting scenarios as well, depending on how it is constructed. I myself would be interested in designing the world so that it is largely like our own, but with perhaps more extreme weather patterns, be it more frequent storms and the like, or less frequent, but more often violent, patterns such as occasional extreme shifts in weather, as well as having areas/regions that are imbued with qualities that causes nature to act differently within them. Although that is (obviously roughly) what I would prefer, I'm also fine with the climate and weather patterns being basically the same as Earth, ultimately I just think that putting some thought into how it would work will help to create a more immersive, full world.

I was thinking that there'd be a bigger landmass of some sort in the South with more moderate European-style weather and culture (think New Zealand), and then various islands further north each with increasingly tropical weather as we approach the "equator" near the north end of the South Pacific; these islands would be more polynesian-like. That gives us a good range of climates, and if we want to add a mountain range to the southern landmass for some really cold stuff, that's easily added as well.

Oh, and to add to that, a part where there are very few islands, each ostensibly uninhabitable. I'm sure some really beautiful shady stories can arise from that. Tounge

Roughly along the lines of what Hammerstar suggested - maybe we can collectively come up with the setting by having everybody think of one piece (say a city-state), describing it, then we all add it together into a setting and possibly make a map out of it! I'm not sure if that's how things are usually done, of course.

(I'm quite excited!)

I've begun researching the culture and mythology of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) as the first stage of creating a sketch culture for our archipelagos. I'm already imagining a more advanced culture, untouched by explorers until relatively recently. I like the idea of including steampunk elements here, or rather using water and steam-powered mechanisms to 'upgrade' Polynesian technology to allow for a more advanced civilisation.

I also like the idea of limiting our more 'western' societies to less advanced eras, to create a contrast with our pseudo-polynesians which gives the islanders an edge and subverts expectations.

Hey! I'd really love to get involved with this, if it's still a thing. Personally, I think it's easier to start with a smaller setting, or a reason for everyone to be together so we can all interact and then build the world out from there. Obviously we would need some sort of details about the world, like basic setting stuff, but we could fill in a lot of the blanks by actually roleplaying them.

Whatever y'all decide, I'd love to be a part of this! I've already got a lot of charcters in my head!

Hey, I am tired so I am making this short. Whatever the person above me said, goes the same for me. I can't wait for this to become a thing. Also think having Polynesian/Easter Island setting is very good.

Well, I'm back from my break, so am keen to get this discussion rolling ever onwards towards something actually happening. Is anyone else still on board?
