[DISCUSSION] Ban on DM Campaigning
#21

On further reflection, I think I will be objecting to these amendments as they are. We are playing a political simulation game and it stands to reason that if you were to run for office, you would actively campaign for the position. In my opinion, prohibiting communication by a candidate with their potential constituent seems rather illogical when viewed from this perspective.

I'm still considering an alternative bill that would merely regulate private campaigning avenues to some degree, I just don't know if I'll actually manage it, so if anyone else wants to try, feel free.

Is this in reference to the idea of publicly disclosing who a candidate contacted?

That's one avenue, yes. I've also considered mandating that all private efforts to convince someone to vote for you should include looks to all the other candidates' public campaigns, so that newer, less informed voters are not taken advantage of to quite the same degree.

Oh yes, that sounds like a very sensible idea. Support Smile

This is a very admirable proposal and I support the spirit of it, but it seems kind of impractical. I'm inclined to go more the route of Seraph in this debate though. I think the real question here is "how do we prevent candidates from taking advantage of the general lack of information available to newer/gameside players about said candidates?"

My concern with the ideas posted is enforceability. Especially in terms of elections that take place gameside, it seems like it would be very difficult to enforce any law that requires disclosure if nations are not made aware of these laws. That could be solved easily enough with a TG blast from the delegate or election commissioner informing nations of their rights and responsibilities as voters when announcing an election.

So far I like some combination of what Seraph has proposed. I'm inclined to say that candidates should maintain a list of anyone they have contacted individually and/or that especially gameside contact (TGs etc) should contain information about the other candidates.

I think the question we're dealing with here really boils down to information access though. The various criminal complaints and general discontent with DM campaigning is definitely successful due to abuse of the lack of information, imo.
