Applications are closed. Due to the number of teams, I'll need to figure out a good and hopefully fair game plan now. I hope to present results for that, if not today, then tomorrow or on Thursday, so we can draw the groups then the latest Smile

The groups have been drawn, but I need to tell you how we determine the scores this time.

We do it almost like before, but a little different Tounge

First of all, I won't take a D6 anymore, but a D20 (via the Internet).
If the "home team" rolls an 11 or higher, then they score some goal(s), the "away team" needs to roll a 10 or lower.

But pay attention: This time there are bonuses and "maluses":

Bonus: Favourite: If your team is higher in the IUFA/SPIT-ranking than the opposing team, you get a bonus. If you're within reach (+10-30 points in front of your opponent) you get a +1 bonus on your roll. If you're +31-60 points in front, you get a +2 bonus. If you're more than +60 points in front of your opponent, you get a +4 bonus. If you're only in front by +0-10 points you get no bonus. If you play against a new player (someone, who participates in the FWC for the first time) you only get a +1 bonus.

Example: Karnetvor currently has 88 points in the ranking. If they would play against Ubesii (86 points; +2 points in front) they wouldn't get a bonus. If they would play against Chola (a new player) or against Huawan (78 points; +10 points in front) they would have a +1 bonus over the other team. If they'd play against Olympia (51 points; +37 points in front), they would have a +2 bonus on their roll. If they'd play against Valora (27 points; +61 points in front), they would have a +4 bonus on their roll.

Bonus: Last FWC: If your team participated in the FWC 2018 and reached the knockout stage, they receive a bonus of +1 on their roll.

Malus: Host (Only GI-Land): In games with Gianlucian participation, the GI-landian team experiences a -2 malus. On the one hand, they are the home team, but there's also a lot of pressure on them and probably everyone wants to beat their a**es. Also this makes the receiving a title two (or in this case: three) times in a row more difficult.

Bonus: New Player: If your team participates for the very first time: Congrats, you get a bonus of +2, because you're hungry and want to show the world, why you deserve to participate regularly in this tournament!

Bonus: Win x 1/2/3+ (same as Malus with losses): If your team lost in the previous game, it will get a malus, if it won a bonus. If you manage to have a winning or losing streak, this bonus/malus will multiply. The maximum bonus/malus is +5/-5 (if you won/lost the three previous games), the minimum +1/-1 (if you won/lost the last game). A draw and a win by penalties (because that officially counts as a draw) breaks whatever streak you have!

Example for everything about rolling the dice and adding bonuses/maluses:
Karnetvor plays against a new team. Karnetvor has won the two games before, while the new team has lost its previous two games.
The dice get rolled for the first time: Karnetvor receives a 16, the opponent a 2.
Karnetvor receives a +1 bonus by being favourites and a +3 bonus for winning the last two games in a row. So their score is overall a 20=16+1+3. They definitely score a goal, because their score is equal to or above 11.
The opponent receives a -2 bonus (negative, because as the away team you don't need a high score, but at best a very low score, so bonuses and maluses work the opposite way) for being a new player, but they also have a +3 malus for losing the last two games. So their score is 3=2-2+3. They will score a goal also, because their score is equal to or below 10.

To determine the number of goals we roll the dice again:

1-5 = 1 goal
6-10 = 2 goals
11-15 = 3 goals
15-20 = Roll again
(15-20)+(1-6)=4 goals
(15-20)+(7-11)=5 goals
(15-20)+(12-16)=6 goals
(15-20)+(16-19)=7 goals
(15-20)+20=Roll again
(15-20)+20+(1-7)=8 goals
(15-20)+20+(8-15)=9 goals
(15-20)+20+(16-19)=10 goals
(15-20)+20+20=10 goals+D6-roll for additional 1 to 6 goals --> Maximum number of goals is 16.

The complete dice rolls for all games can be seen in the tournament's spreadsheet.

The rules for penalties come later down the line, when we're close to the K.O.-games Tounge

I hope, you like the new system like that. I hope it works as good as I imagine it. And overall a little better than the previous system.

" If you play against a new player (someone, who participates in the FWC for the first time) you only get a +1 bonus."

"Bonus: New Player: If your team participates for the very first time: Congrats, you get a bonus of +2, because you're hungry and want to show the world, why you deserve to participate regularly in this tournament!"

Little bit confused by these 2, do they not contradict?

No, they don't. First of all, those are two different bonuses. Secondly the first you quoted is a +1-effect on a team playing against the new team, while the second one you quoted is a +2-effect on the new team.

But does it not just add up to being +1 to the new team?

If we look solely at those two bonuses, then yes, you're right. In my view a team having their first big tournament are just motivated differently than an "old" team is and thus has some underdog bonus.
But the "old" team therefore has another bonus potentially available to them: The performance bonus based on the last FWC, which is also +1, if they reached the KO-stage in 2018 and so have a motivation to do this once again.

Now of course you could say, that the current system favours new teams too much, but I think, that's a wrong impression made by the fact, that we just have many new teams. If we'd only have three new teams or so (like in the real world cup), then that small advantage wouldn't be so obvious.

We did it, we have finished the group stage, which means, we are going into the knockout stage.
I think, I don't need to stress, that the knockout stages of tournaments are a bit more difficult than the group stages. There's much more pressure on each team and each of those teams can count themselves to belong to the best teams of the world.

I want to portray that also, when rolling the dice. Further I don't want to have too many matches with too many goals, like we sadly had in the group stage, although I was sure, the dice rolling system was good enough. Maybe it was for the group stage, but it needs fixing for the "difficult games".

The first roll won't change. The home team needs to roll a number x bigger or equal to 11, the away team a number x smaller or equal to 10. Bonuses and maluses do not change either.

The number a die needs to show for a certain amount of goals will change though. These are the new rules:

Round of 16

1-5 = 1 goal
6-10 = 2 goals
11-16 = 3 goals
17-20 = Roll again
(17-20)+(1-8) = 4 goals
(17-20)+(9-16) = 5 goals
(17-20)+(17-20) = Roll again
(17-20)+(17-20)+(1-4) = 6 goals
(17-20)+(17-20)+(5-8) = 7 goals
(17-20)+(17-20)+(9-12) = 8 goals
(17-20)+(17-20)+(13-16) = 9 goals
(17-20)+(17-20)+(17-20) = 10 goals (maximum)

Quarter Finals

1-6 = 1 goal
7-11 = 2 goals
12-17 = 3 goals
18-20 = Roll again
(18-20)+(1-9) = 4 goals
(18-20)+(10-17) = 5 goals
(18-20)+(18-20) = Roll again
(18-20)+(18-20)+(1-4) = 6 goals
(18-20)+(18-20)+(5-8) = 7 goals
(18-20)+(18-20)+(9-12) = 8 goals
(18-20)+(18-20)+(13-16) = 9 goals
(18-20)+(18-20)+(17-20) = 10 goals (maximum)

Semi Finals + Bronze Medal Match

1-7 = 1 goal
8-12 = 2 goals
13-18 = 3 goals
19-20 = Roll again
(19-20)+(1-10) = 4 goals
(19-20)+(11-18) = 5 goals
(19-20)+(19-20) = Roll again
(19-20)+(19-20)+(1-4) = 6 goals
(19-20)+(19-20)+(5-8) = 7 goals
(19-20)+(19-20)+(9-12) = 8 goals
(19-20)+(19-20)+(13-16) = 9 goals
(19-20)+(19-20)+(17-20) = 10 goals (maximum)

Final

1-8 = 1 goal
9-13 = 2 goals
14-19 = 3 goals
20 = Roll again
20+(1-11) = 4 goals
20+(12-19) = 5 goals
20+20 = Roll again
20+20+(1-6) = 6 goals
20+20+(7-9) = 7 goals
20+20+(10-14) = 8 goals
20+20+(15-18) = 9 goals
20+20+(19-20) = 10 goals (maximum)

If a game ends in a draw, there will be extra time. The rolling starts all over again with the home team needing to reach x>/=11 and the away team needing x</=10. Bonuses and maluses will NOT be granted a second time.
The additional goals would be determined this way:

Extra Time

1-8 = 1 goal
9-16 = 2 goals
17-19 = 3 goals
20 = Roll again
20+(1-15) = 4 goals
20+(16-20) = 5 goals (maximum)

If the game is still not decided, a penalty shootout will follow. For the general rules on a penalty shootout in FIFA World Cups, please just read the Wikipedia-article.
The teams will shoot in alternating order. Who will shoot first decides a normal 6-sided die. 1-3: Away Team, 4-6: Home Team.
For scoring a goal, the D20-die needs to show an even numer (2, 4, 6,....,20). For missing a goal, the D20 needs to show an odd number (1, 3, 5,.....,19).

I hope, this system works for everyone and that we will produce some good results with that, so the next player hosting the FWC has a good system ready to use Happywide
