An Idea of a new map.
#1

Recently, with the help of Qwert, I was able to make the Pacifica System inside Universe Sandbox 2 (stats of planets here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...edit#gid=0).
Due to the inability to control continents in Universe Sandbox 2 (as of the making of this), I would like to bring forth the idea to a new map.[Image: YOV4p3Y.png]

No. Replacing a map that has been used by a large community of RPers for a long time won't be supported by me because you made the new map in a game. Now, I wouldn't mind if it was replaced, but I don't want it to be replaced in the first place.

Could be used in extra-canon though

if I understand correctly, it being made in a game makes it bad... How?

It doesn't make it bad, it's just not very good reasoning to replace the map we currently have.

Your wording definently made it seem bad. No matter.

Well, there is nothing stopping us from getting a new map, so long as the community wishes for it.
As a note, it is not the only reason I'd wish for a change of the map.

I am against changing the map for multiple reasons.

(1) The current map is and was home to many roleplayers - currently active and inactive ones alike - for many years. And there's even stories and worldbuilding between roleplayers and non-players sometimes. I do not see any benefit in forcing all players to either create new nations (even if under the same name) or rebuilding their old nations in new borders or to hugely retcon many things. Also don't forget regional history or events. The retcons for the Great War, Serevan War, Reizen Civil War, the colonisation era in TSP, etc. could become huge...

(2) The map is not nice to look at. Even if I overlook the colour scheme and the totally crazy elevations, having so many islands and weird looking thin landmasses is just...ugly.

(3) This reason is selfish, but it is one reason, why I'm against it, so that's why I list it here:
Do you know, how much work it is to create maps? To realistically calculate populations by exactly measuring your borders and area? To streamline the maps you created slowly but steadily? To create municipalities with normal looking borders? Those "little" things, we worldbuilding-roleplayers are fond of and put much of our time into, it takes literally hours to get decent results for such stuff, even with a small nation like GI-Land. The thought of re-doing EVERYTHING again is not one I like much.
Yeah, it might have its charm, that with a new map, GI-Land might look more like the country it should be (a.k.a. looking almost the same, but bigger), but....it's so, so, so much work...

(4) We have a world map. If you want to discuss opening up the rest of Pacifica to roleplay, I'm sure you'll find quite a few supporters.
Otherwise no. And if the rest of Pacifica shall look different in your opinion, we can discuss that too, however ONLY if the current regional map can still be canonically used, so the TSP-region needs to be part of a new world map too.

In a way, I think it means we could have 2 independent Pacifica canons, only related by having the same solar system (maybe the same nations), and the same technology? Such a roleplay could work.

Not 2 Pacifica canons. If this were to become a canon, it should be entirely unrelated to Pacifica.

I will probably repeat some arguments put forward by some people, but if this can come to support the other, I'll gladly repeat.

1) The fact that this proposal to change the entire map of our collective worldbuilding stands on a single line of argument to me is already a lot to be completely against changing the map. Changing the map is a huge deal, and if it stands on a single argument then of course the proposal is not the most serious to me. It has to be grounded into many arguments, with some strong demonstrations that this proposal is better than the actual map. And for the moment, the only argument being that a game (which some people may or may not have in this community) doesn't allow some texture importation is very thin and it's almost like a joke. (The argument is a joke, not the person.)

2) Let's say there were many arguments that justify that everyone loses their already made material of maps (city maps, electoral maps, administrative divisions maps, transportation maps, etc.) which took countless hours (I'm not even talking about my own crazy idea to do an entire Google Streetmap map of my tiniest nation which is sinking my time when I get to work on it) and that the arguments are worth the change for a map. This is not a realistic map. I don't understand how plate tectonics would create a world with such many islands scattered in undefined patterns and of these sizes in a completely random manner, combined with elevations in places I dont understand which don't make sense from a scientific standpoint. If there is a theory grounded in science that justifies this map being the way it is, I'm all ears, even for hypothetical purposes.

3) This proposal sound really "sudden" to me. Have I missed a discussion where people have asked for a new map or something like that? Because to me, if no one is complaining, why change? It seems to me that there has not been a discussion put forward on the matter. Which should be the basis of any major change before an actual proposal like this one. I have the feeling that all the hours I have put forward worldbuilding, map creating, etc. are worthless to the eyes of such a proposal because they can be so easily erased "just because". A proposal such as this one does not seem to value the work put forward by many people in this community and is borderline insulting. At least, that is how I feel with such a proposal.

4) I am all for people who have ideas that bring the community forward and contributes to the collective worldbuilding. Proposals that respect the hours invested by all in this collective project that is Pacifica. People take great time to develop this shared world and I for sure prefer ideas that improve and add to the actual worldbuilding that has been started for a long time now, than ideas which want to erase everything and start something new. However, there are proper channels for people who want to undertake new projects, like the extra-canon for instance.
