SALLODESIAN MILITARY BASE ANNOUNCED
[Image: Ii05Cru.jpg]
Sallodesian Secretary of Defence, General Jaco Pretorius.

The government has agreed to allow the Sallodesian military to open a new overseas base near the city of Varana in Cinis. The negotiation involved both the Livana Ministry of Defence and the Sallodesia Department of Defence, which will also involve military engineers and experts from Myria. The 114 kmarea, formerly an abandoned fishing port, will be refurbished to allow the Sallodesian military to anchor its new Aircraft Carrier group, and accommodate thousands of Sallodesian personnel. The construction of the base will be primarily the responsibility of Livanan contractors, which according to the Minister for Defence, Ret. Gen. Hon. Jeremy Cage, will further the security of the Mediterranean region as a whole. The negotiation also involved discussion on food supply which will be accommodated by Livana suppliers, presenting a new economic opportunity for domestic companies and local businesses in Cinis. The Governor of Cinis, Res. Jonathan Wilde has shown his approval of the plan but requests further elaboration from the government on possible impacts on local residents.

Concerns were raised by representatives of the Freedom Faction regarding the base's approval by the government, especially on the ground of neutrality. Hon. Robert Jacey, Chief Whip of the Freedom Faction stated in today's session in parliament that " ... this (Sallodesian Base Approval) will set Livana on a dangerous precedent. To allow foreign military presence on our soil is to allow their enemies to bomb us." The Conservatives also showed disappointment. While the Green Party demands research to be conducted on the environmental and social problems the base would present. Reacting to these protests, PM Alston declared that this initiative would further cement Livana's relevance on the global stage, and with the backing of such an admirable military force as that of Sallodesia, provide protection and stability for Livana in particular, and the region.

PRESIDENT TRENTON VISITS CARNA 1ST GEOTHERMAL PLANT CONSTRUCTION SITE
President Trenton visited the construction site of Carna 1st Geothermal Plant yesterday. Accompanied by the Minister for Industry and Energy, Hon. Bernie Duston and the new Minister for Forestries and Environment Res. Robert Leyton, the President observed the progress of the construction and met with business and industry leaders on site. The President gave brief statements on the importance of Energy Transition and Livana's path to become more self-sufficient energy-wise. The President also hopes that this project will give Livana a new outlook for foreign investments in the energy sector and 4.0 industry. After the President's remarks, Minister Leyton presented his new initiative on environmental synergizing with development and economic expansion, hoping to tackle recent environmental issues that Livana faced in the last couple of decades. The initiative will involve multiparty collaboration and encompasses all three states of the Confederacy using a "...holistic approach..." that will ensure inclusivity among the populace as a whole.

PEOPLE'S VOICE: REMEMBERING THE PAST IN THE TWENTY FIRST CENTURY
Marcus Valian has been a history teacher for 40 years in Arcana 12th State Junior Highschool. Throughout his career, he has seen Livana change; from a nation gripped by dictatorship and reeling from civil wars to a burgeoning society of the modern era. Speaking to us on a beautiful Sunday Morning in Arcana's historic city square, he expressed concerns that young Livanans today have little to no respect for history. "I had a student once asking me why he need to learn history. It is usual of course for history teachers, any teachers, in fact, to get questions like that. But he also said that he wouldn't need history in his career, at least as much as other subjects.," said the 61 years old. He then proceed to tell us that students, in general, have lower scores in history subjects today, compared to previous generations. He also remarked on the numerous humiliating session with prominent people, politicians and celebrities, that failed to comprehend historical matters in live interviews, especially the recent interview of Freedom Faction MP for Arcana, Hon. Terence Grant, whom erroneously stated a quote from Colonel Tarsis mistaking it as Jeremy Clinton's.

"I didn't say that the students are to blame. Our teaching method may have played a significant role in the declining apprehension of history too," said Mr Valian. He then elaborates on the dangers that society would face if they failed to apprehend and appreciate their historical background. "It's just the same as your daily life, really. You made mistakes in the past, and that mistakes will keep on reminding you to be better and to avoid a similar event to ever happening again. Today, there are many Tarsis sympathizers and anarchist supporters, all of whom I believe have forgotten Livana's darker years. If they paid attention more in the classrooms, they would have learnt about Tarsis' murders of political opponents, FF's rapes and tortures in the countryside, and what anarchy had brought to our society in the 50s. Should we forget our past and failed to apprehend history, I fear that we will be forced to repeat it in the future."

PROTEST TURNED VIOLENT IN VARANA
[Image: UePP4Mt.jpg]
Protesters in front of the Cinaian Legislative Building in Varana.

The construction of Sallodesia's new military base in Cinis met great resistance amongst the Cinaian populace. Throughout August, protests occurred in Cinis and in Livonia, mostly in a peaceful and organized manner. But yesterday, in Varana, a clash between police officers and the protesters had turned violent, causing thirteen people and five police officers to be injured and a forced end to the protest in Varana. The Mayor of Varana ordered a day of respite and ordered a halt on protests until 24 hours have passed since the clash. Governor Wilde has made visits to the hospital, meet with the wounded officers and protesters before pledging compensation for them and their kin.

A police investigation is underway to deduce the chronology of the events. Initial findings suggested that the protesters brought some fireworks, which are prohibited by the city to be lit except for national or state celebrations. The police on site had attempted to seize the contraband but were resisted by the protesters which escalated into scuffles and the police tried to arrest the disobeying protesters. This action escalated the situation and soon protesters began throwing things at the police. Some of the protesters argued that because the fireworks were not lit, the officers did not have the right to make arrests.

THE MARINA BRACED FOR NORTHERN TOURISTS
With winter looming on the horizon for Pacifica's northern hemisphere, the Marina Guild is ready to utilize its new facilities to accommodate new tourists. "The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has put billions of Fera in refurbishing the marina, and the Guild is eager to benefit from this" stated the Chairman of the Guild, Robert Tilde. A lot of the hotels and resorts in the marina still undergoing renovations, expected to be finished in early November, in time for the holiday season. The marina also reportedly hired more street cleaners to maintain the area's historic waterfront promenade clean amongst all the constructions and renovations. "We expected revenue increase for this year. The money will help the businesses here to flourish even more," continued the Chairman with excitement. The President and his family are also expected to celebrate Union Day in the Marina this September, precisely in the Old Square of the town Falver for trooping the colors ceremony.

PEOPLE'S VOICE: AN END TO NEUTRALITY IN LIVANA
Reginald Wang, NP Foreign Correspondent - For time immemorial, Livana rarely engaged in International debacles. It has been the philosophy since the Livonian Revolt of the 19th century, that Livana will be better off as a neutral country; enemy to none, friend to all, as Jeremy Clinton later stated in one of his speeches. However, this philosophy seemed to no longer have a part in Livana's contemporary administrative and foreign policy circles. With Livana's entry to the World Forum last year, and then the arriving foreign companies, not to mention a foreign military base constructed in the heart of Livana, one wonders where does the People's Coalition is carrying Livana to. What future entails this sudden change of foreign policy, that the government is willing to make a such radical change?

I can argue that Foreign Minister Staunton is very crucial for this pivot. Her academic papers during her study at Calmin Social Institute showed that she has a rather liberal perspective on foreign policy. In this perspective, scholars argued that conflict can be avoided through economic interdependence, the spread of democracy, and also with the establishment of an international institution/regime which oversees some international norms. This does explain the more active approach that the government has made in international relations for the last two years. But the establishment of the Sallodesian Base conflicted with this, unless of course, she also believed in the opposing realist approach to international relations, which saw the world as anarchic, and that only through a balance of power can peace be maintained. This can be achieved, among other ways, by bandwagoning; uniting one's nation with a coalition or a nation with huge power and influence. Of course, the trade-off will be the nation's own sovereignty. In the end, though, the people only request one thing from the government's foreign policy and the government should always endeavor to provide this at any given chance; perpetual peace.
