Why does it always come back to the fascination of the language??? People use others all the time and you guys don't even bat an eyelid.

Woah, woah, I was just wondering, man. It's just that I wanted to learn Japanese, but there is no course on Duolingo, so I haven't been able to do that. It seems hard as anything, so a credible clarifying source would be helpful.

What little I know I got from reading "Teach Yourself Japanese", listening to jpop and watching anime, if that helps.

The weather is damp, the landscape is green and very pastoral with low, rolling hills (drumlins, made by glaciers dropping piles of rocks as they passed) and not much else. We do have a few awesome world class attractions, though, like the Giant's Causeway and the Antrim coast , or Titanic Belfast (which is one of the best museums I've ever been to).

I used to find it all very boring and was glad to head to Scotland to go to University, but the older I get, the more I enjoy my return visits.
It is to be expected. 'Cuz your family(probably) lives there and that's where you grew up basically.

I've heard that Belfast was the port of the Titanic. Is it true? Just to confirm.

And I only know Northern Ireland for its Ireland vs. UK fighting. N. Ireland didn't wanna leave the UK, and until some time, Ireland claimed it in its Constitution. What is your opinion on Northern Ireland-Ireland reunification?

RE: Lampshade Bar and Grill - Seraph - 05-08-2016

Titanic was built in the Harland and Wolfe shipyards in Belfast (and now they film Game of Thrones there), although she was registered in Liverpool ('cos that's where the White Star Line headquarters were) and didn't pick up paying passengers until Southampton. (I'm a Titanic geek, too).

The political situation in Northern Ireland remains complicated (although it's mostly peaceful). My family would be classed as Protestant (even though I'm the only one who actually goes to church) and Unionist - meaning wanting to stay part of the UK, so 'officially' that's what I'm expected to believe. I'm not sure that's going to be best for NI in the long term, though.

You may be aware that Scotland held an independence referendum in September 2014. The turnout was very high and the outcome was 55%-45% in favour of remaining part of the Union. I wanted Scotland to remain because I view myself as British first and value the cooperation between the four nations that make up the Union. However, the promises made by the government to get people to vote NO to independence haven't really been held up and, with Scotland being largely more left-wing than the rest of the UK, the actions of the current Conservative government have led to a surge in support in the Scottish Nationalist Party and another referendum seems inevitable, especially if the UK votes to leave the EU next month.

If Scotland gets independence, I suspect Wales will follow, the Union will collapse and then Northern Ireland will be in serious trouble. In that event I think a United Ireland is the best outcome, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Ideally I'd like to see the UK become federal in government (and a Republic once Elizabeth passes on), with much representation and decision-making power for each region (including separating Highlands, Northeast and Lowlands in Scotland and divisions within England too), but the same cooperation and identity we have now.

(You might now see why I was keen to include nationalist/separatist tensions in Erinor - I feel I need to explore these themes more a lot more, just to get my head around them. )

RE: Lampshade Bar and Grill - Ryccia - 05-08-2016

I see your point.

I support what the people support, as Im not one of them. If the majority advocate independence, then I'll do so as well. If they decide to stay, I'll advocate that instead. After all, its the will of the people.

RE: Lampshade Bar and Grill - Seraph - 05-08-2016

That is fair enough, and indeed, before all this, my attitude was that Northern Ireland should go with whichever larger nation offered it the best future. Questions of the stability of the Union aside, that undoubtedly remains the UK.

Of course, if my plans for the UK pan out, I'm not sure calling ourselves the FR will really catch on, lol.

J-pop is worse than K-pop. And that's saying something.

As a phase, it was mostly out of curiosity, although it did leave me with an enduring love of Utada Hikaru, Shiina Ringo and Tokyo Jihen (none of which were typical jpop.)

Barkeep! A banana split please!
