RE: Lampshade Bar and Grill - RandomGuy199 - 01-17-2017 (01-16-2017, 09:43 AM)GI-Land Wrote: If you need help learning German, you can write with me. I'd be glad to help you (It's a serious offer, whether you want/can make it to Germany in the long term or not.) I'll consider it, thanks However, my main focus now is preparing for university while surviving the crisis. My aunt once said that, once this is over, whoever stays in here will have more chances to get jobs, due to all the people who have already left. *eats snacks* GI-Land Wrote:I thought about studying history as well, because German history is quite interesting He. Precisely one the reasons I chose history is because I absolutely despise math and want to be as far away as possible from it xD (01-16-2017, 06:58 PM)Ausstan Wrote: History isn't that bad. Unless you live in Australia. It is very Australia focused for most of primary school/early high school, and we don't know much about Australia with the aboriginals, so you have about 250 years of history to learn. I have done 3 years of history just about Australia's role in ww1/2 alone. I've dropped history as a subject now, but I have a big interest in history in Europe. Even if I did want to keep on doing it, I am trying to get into a science course so that wouldn't help much. We suffer from the same problem here, but on a lesser scale. We have a bit more to learn (about 500 years, plus aboriginal cultures. It helps that Venezuela was one of the first places settled by the Spanish colonists, being visited by Columbus himself and all). We usually alternate between pre-colonial and colonial history and War of Independence (1500's-1830) and modern history (1830-present day) each year. We only see world history in 8th grade, which is a shame. The problem is that most of what we see either comes with heavy bias/propaganda; for example, the Independence War part either casually overlooks or downplays the atrocities committed by the Patriot forces against civilians, or justifies them as necessary. The silver lining is that, due to the unstable nature of our politics during the 19th and early 20th centuries, which includes at least ten coups/civil wars, that part is usually interesting. There's also a time (in 1902), when both the British and the Germans attempted to blockade us to force us to pay debts and we managed to not end up destroyed RE: Lampshade Bar and Grill - GI-Land - 01-17-2017 Well, we don't have a big colonial history and never really talked about it, although there would be this important part with the genocide on the Herero and Nama in "German Southwest-Africa", but whatever. We talked about the Egypts, Greeks and Romans mainly, especially the latter one, before going into a bit more detail, when it comes to the Middle Ages and Rennessaince. BUT the next big subject after the Romans was in fact the reformation by Luther, but not the Thirty Years' War, and the Absolutism in France, before the French Revolution. We only talked barely about the American and Industrial Revolution in Geography and English class. The formation of Germany, the "Kaiserreich", colonisation and WW1 we "did in high speed" and then, a big subject came up, that we talked about in sooooooo many grades at school: Hitler and the Holocaust. WW2 wasn't interesting, in the minds of the curriculum-writers, but especially the rise of Hitler, due to various reasons, the war preparations (where we, surprisingly also talked about historians, that gave e.g. GB a little share of blame on the start of WW2) and the Holocaust. This was followed by the time until 1949 (1989 in the advanced course) and that was it, I guess. RE: Lampshade Bar and Grill - rhinotaz - 01-17-2017 Lampshade Bar, Grill & History Forum RE: Lampshade Bar and Grill - RandomGuy199 - 01-21-2017 Well, speaking about history... If my memory doesn't fail me, exactly one year ago, then Delegate Hileville, on the pretext that admins Kris Kringle and Sandaoguo were abusing their powers, making the regional forum "permanently unavailable" (the High Court disagreed) created a new regional forum on Zetaboards, and then redirected the URL of the official forums to it, effectively moving the forums without Assembly consultation (which was, and still is, unconstitutional). This triggered a constitutional crisis that led to a coup on Hileville and his cabinet's part ten days later, nearly causing a civil war. As I wasn't sure if somebody would commemorate it (it was a pretty... intense time, after all), and I'm of the people who think history should be remembered lest we repeat it, I'll be having a "Remembrance Week" of sorts here at the bar, where the ones who remember the whole thing can talk about what they did at the time or something. I'll give more info about the coup itself on January 31st, the one year anniversary of the event. Hileville's original statement about the move can be found here. RE: Lampshade Bar and Grill - Zak6858 - 01-21-2017 Well I attempted to try my best to stop the coup, but I was overlooked by everyone. RE: Lampshade Bar and Grill - rhinotaz - 01-22-2017 Lmaoo RE: Lampshade Bar and Grill - Escade - 01-22-2017 Thanks, RandomGuy...there was a TSP History project a while back that was meant to capture all of the history of the region in one place (a timeline) and it didn't seem to go anywhere. It would be nice to have a Timeline! *Sits at the bar, with a sparkly drink, listening to the history* RE: Lampshade Bar and Grill - Seraph - 01-23-2017 (01-22-2017, 02:32 PM)Escade Wrote: Thanks, RandomGuy...there was a TSP History project a while back that was meant to capture all of the history of the region in one place (a timeline) and it didn't seem to go anywhere.I worked love to continue the history project, but it would require a large and dedicated team, which I don't think we can field right now. RE: Lampshade Bar and Grill - Kris Kringle - 01-24-2017 (01-23-2017, 05:17 AM)Seraph Wrote: I worked love to continue the history project, but it would require a large and dedicated team, which I don't think we can field right now. I know this is easier said than done, but a simple way to start collecting history might be to ask questions to the people who were present at a certain historical events or who might know enough about it. It's quite possible they might have lots to tell, if someone took the time to hear them out. RE: Lampshade Bar and Grill - Seraph - 01-24-2017 (01-24-2017, 03:11 PM)Kris Kringle Wrote:Indeed, the issue is finding the someones who would want to do it and also knowing who to ask. The latter is not my strong area, but I'm sure I know people who know. The former, however, requires a bunch of engaged folk who are also into NS history, or willing to explore it further and that I (and indeed We) do not have right now.(01-23-2017, 05:17 AM)Seraph Wrote: I worked love to continue the history project, but it would require a large and dedicated team, which I don't think we can field right now. Perhaps I should advertise specifically for folk who would be interested in learning (and researching) more. Roavin might have some ideas too. Aaaaaaand at this point I'm just turning the bar into a mental scribble pad... Sorry. |
