Good news everyone! Well... mostly good. I'll spend two days in Mérida State, aka, the only place in Venezuela where snow can be found, and home of the world's highest cable car (it ends on the Pico Espejo mountain at 4,765 meters!). It'll be a long journey by bus, but it will be worth it. Downside is, the political situation here is still very unstable, and there's protests and riots everywhere. We'll see how it goes...

As always, GI-Land will be the interim barman. Should be easy.

Hello, every...! Heh, still empty. Anyway, I'm back. That trip had its upsides... and lots of downsides.

The route to Mérida was brutal. Due to protests, lots of roads were blocked, and many drivers were afraid something might happen to them if they went there. So, we (I, my aunt, and her boyfriend) had to take like five buses due to them refusing to go further. We had to do a stretch on foot, due to a barricade blocking a road (and these were not peaceful protesters; these are assholes known as guarimberos, who block roads, carry both homemade and real weaponry, attack members of the security forces, loot and burn both public and private property... all in all, they screw over anyone who doesn't actively fight against the government, even Opposition supporters. I'll tell more in a second).

On the second day, after arriving at Mérida itself, and having a spectacular tour of the mountains, in the return trip to the hotel, our bus got stuck in a town due to another fucking barricade. We spent eight hours as hostages of some asshole guarimberos (I know I shouldn't wish for the death of my fellow human beings, but fuck those bastards. Fuck them). I got altitude sickness (the town is at 3,000 metres above sea level), and almost got hypothermia (temperatures at 6 °C!), and genuinely feared for my own life, as the idiots on the barricade did not have any intention to let anybody go until morning. They eventually opened the barricade at midnight, only after 100 or so people went there to protest (and the rioters made clear that they didn't care for our lives).

Anyway, went to the cable car (there wasn't any snow, unfortunately), had a blast there, and had a trip back home just as hellish as the one we had to make to get to Mérida in the first place. My conclusion: this country is fucked, there is no solution to this shit, fuck everything.

Maybe I'll write the full story, who knows...?

Remember, this is Venezuela. When the National Guard shows up (there are some places where they don't dare to go, as the gangs can be as well armed as they are), violent fighting ensues. Lots of people have been killed on both sides. That reminds me, during my time as a hostage, one of the rioters got inside the bus (seemingly to see how many were inside) and said, "close the windows, because if the Guard comes... we're not responsible for what might happen". Those bastards (who, I must remind everyone, were heavily armed), were ready to kill anybody who interfered.

Also, and maybe this will be an unpopular opinion abroad, but, after all I've seen and heard in the last four days... the Venezuelan Opposition has completely disillusioned me. The politicians at the helm, with some exceptions, have proven themselves to be incompetent and incapable of organizing themselves effectively. The people on the streets, the people on the barricades, have proven themselves to be just as ruthless as the Government and the security apparatus they claim to be fighting against. Public and private institutions have been burnt, people have been killed mercilessly... and for what? The Armed Forces are still loyal to the Government and will quell any insurrection. I'm still hoping for a change (the Government is completely responsible for the crisis, they keep sending the security forces after the people marching peacefully in the streets, and they're still trying to cement their dictatorship), and if the Opposition politicians are the only alternative, so be it. But the Government will only fall if, 1- they organize democratic elections (which I doubt will happen), 2- the Army switches sides and overthrows Maduro by itself, or 3- the whole population takes up arms, which won't happen as long as there arev people still supporting the Government. This country is completely, irreversively screwed, and, honestly, I don't see a way out of this situation.

While I read your answer, RG, a German newspaper posted something about the happenings in Venezuela too. It seems, that the military marched into Colonia Tovar after the people demonstrated a bit.
For me it's kinda unbelievable, that this is happening. I mean, why isn't it possible in the 21st century to just live free? (I mean, democracy is another thing, but basic freedoms and, dunno, food or at least so much money, you're able to live an okay life should be normal in my naive mind)
