INTRODUCTION:
The Viridian Republic is an interstellar unitary democratic republic located east to the center of Sector A1-0, and it spans an approximate area of 480 x 360 ly2. Research indicates that the area contains 31 745 star systems. As of the year 2891 UVT (Universal Viridian Time), the Viridian Republic has colonized 2638 planet, and has established outposts on approximately 600 more planets. The capital is the City of Viridia, the oldest Viridian city on the planet of Viridia. The president of the Viridian Republic is Flavia Griffin. The Viridians pursue a policy of isolationism that stems from their history with the Oras terribilis.

FOUNDING MYTH:
The Viridians were a collective of nations that joined forces when faced with “The Great Danger”. Lisa Viridia, the woman who discovered the habitable planet the Viridians traveled to during the Exodus, is seen as the founder of the Viridian Republic. Upon arrival the colonizers named the planet after her for its lush forests. According to myth, each star on the flag represents one nation that participated in the efforts to save the human race. However, only four languages are still spoken in the Viridian Republic.

COLONIZATION OF VIRIDIA:
The arrival of colonists in the 1st year UVT established the first Viridian colony. The colonists encountered a pathogen the human body had little immunity against, 18512 Viridians died due to the “Founder’s Disease”.

CIVIL WAR AND DESTRUCTION OF THE GREAT LIBRARY OF VIRIDIA:
In the early 2nd century UVT, some colonies attempted to secede from the Viridian Republic, causing a civil war. During the civil war the secessionists almost captured the capital, the City of Viridia. During the siege of the city, the secessionists destroyed the Great Library of Viridia, thereby eradicating all records of human history that predates the founding of the Viridian Republic and most of the early history and science of the Viridian Republic itself, setting the Viridian Republic back by centuries in science.

EARLY SPACE EXPLORATION AND COLONIZATION OF OTHER PLANETS:
In the 6th century UVT, the planet of Viridia had a population of 64 401 051 Viridians. As the Viridians started to master the planet, they also dreamt of returning to the stars they once crossed to find Viridia. With the rediscovery of the science behind cryonics and travel at 25% of the speed of light, and an ever growing population, the first exploration missions were launched, many of whom were unsuccessful.
In the late 6th century UVT, the Viridians assessed another planet, approximately 4.3 light years from Viridia, to be suitable for colonization by the Viridians, and started to colonize it in the 7th century UVT.

DISCOVERY OF EXTINCT INTELLIGENT LIFE:
In the 9th century UVT, the Viridians discovered the planet “Cedgonda D”. On Cedgonda D, the Viridians found the remains of an extinct intelligent species they named “Gondo sapiens”. The study of the planet suggests that gamma rays caused the extinction of the Gondo sapiens.

EXTENSION OF LIFE EXPECTANCY AND "THE OFFSPRING PROTOCOL":
Due to medical breakthroughs, the concept of life expectancy was rendered less important in the 10th century UVT, extending the average life expectancy beyond 500 standard UVT years. Anti-aging treatments have become ubiquitous, making death a concept of the past.
People who are terminally ill or nearing the end of their life may elect to upload their consciousness to the Mind Drive. On the Mind Drive, their consciousness can continue to live after their human body dies. However, once fully uploaded they cannot return to their human body and remain confined to the Mind Drive. They may exist digitally in perpetuity, yet their consciousness could be destroyed if the Mind Drive is damaged/destroyed.
Death usually has one of the following causes:
  • disasters (e.g., Viridian quakes)
  • attacks
  • fire
  • poisoning
  • suicide
  • life imprisonment with prohibition of treatment with anti-aging pharmaceuticals, and artificial organs
  • old age
Due to the advances in medicine and genetic engineering, the government of the Viridian Republic had to implement “The Offspring Protocol” when the population of the planet of Viridia was already 20 959 915 563 Viridians. Ever since, a Viridian who wishes to become a parent, whether alone or with partners (either of a different or same gender), must enlist for the colonization of planets that have not yet reached their capacity if the planet they live on has already reached its capacity.
Due to genetic engineering and the development of artificial uteruses and incubators in the early 4th century UVT, people of the same sex, and single people, can become parents of a child that shares their DNA, though in the later case the single person must choose from donated oocytes or spermatocytes since reproductive cloning is banned. Reproductive cloning is only allowed for the harvest of stem cells and development of artificial organs; fetuses generated through reproductive cloning must be terminated within 12 096 000 standard seconds, and may not be carried to term.

"THE GREAT ERROR" AND THE WAR AGAINST THE ORAS TERRIBILIS:
By the 15th century UVT, the Viridians had colonized 14 planets other than Viridia and discovered travel at 80% of the speed of light. The Viridians then discovered the planet “Oras E” and the “Oras terribilis”, an intelligent tripedal species with scales.
The Viridians who started to establish colonies on Oras E wished for peace, but in the 18th century UVT, the Oras terribilis attacked the Viridians. Due to their advanced technology, the Viridians were able to neutralize the threat, but it also damaged Oras E beyond repair. The Viridians have ever since not allowed other intelligent life forms to exist on planets they intend to colonize.

REFERENDUM ON CENTRALIZATION:
After the advent of Gateway Travel, which allowed the Viridians to travel significantly faster between their colonies, the Viridians held a referendum in the 20th century UVT whether to have a more centralized government. 73% of Viridians voted in favor, ending the federalized structure of the Viridian Republic. Ever since, the Viridian Republic has had a centralized elected government in the City of Viridia.

DISCOVERY OF FTL TRAVEL:
In the early 26th century UVT, the Viridians discovered FTL travel, which has allowed them to accelerate their colonization of the universe. By the year 2600 UVT, the Viridians had already colonized 620 planets.

CURRENT YEAR - 2891 UVT:
By the year 2891 UVT, the Viridians have colonized 2638 planets. The Viridian Republic has a total population of approximately 16 361 billion Viridians.

Excerpt from "On Viridian Isolationism"

From the belief that all intelligent life is inherently hostile to the Viridian Republic, the Viridian Republic has refrained from establishing first contact with other galactic civilizations despite being aware of their existence. Instead, we have pursued a policy of isolationism.
We used to believe that when faced with mutual destruction, there could be peace between civilizations, but "The Great Error" and the War against the Oras terribilis has taught us that most intelligent life is inherently expansionist, hostile, and would view other species as a threat that must be eradicated.
Ever since we have eradicated all life forms deemed incompatible with human life as we have continued to colonize space. We are yet to establish first contact that does not lead to war, and eternal silence is preferable to war with other galactic civilizations.

Excerpt from "The Colonization Protocol (Simplified)"

"Perseverance is the foundation that mastery is built upon." - 15th President of the Viridian Republic

Prior to the colonization of a planet, the flora, fauna, prokaryotic and eukaryotic life, and pathogens of the planet must be studied intensely to assure that the events of the “Founder’s Disease” do not repeat on the to be colonized planet. Research is to be conducted in outposts for a period of at least 10 Viridian years, prior to initiating the colonization of a planet.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS FOR FURTHER CONSIDERATION OF COLONIZATION:
For further consideration a planet must fulfill at least one third of the following characteristics.
  • DISTANCE FROM STAR (F-TYPE) - K-TYPE) IN ESTIMATED HABITABLE ZONE
  • AXIAL TILT: 3° - 50°
  • GRAVITY: 0.4 - 2g (3.924 m/s - 19.62 m/s)
  • ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE: 0.5 - 10 atm
  • MEAN TEMPERATURE: 243.15 K - 308.15 K
  • MAGNETIC FIELD STRENGTH: 0.5 - 4 T
  • ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE: 0.5 - 10 atm
  • ATMOSPHERIC OXYGEN: x ≤ 0.5 ATA (0.01 ATA needed to support complex life)
  • NITROGEN PRESENCE: enough N2 for fixation or fixed nitrogen present
  • ECCENTRICITY: x ≤ 0.15
  • WATER AVAILABILITY
  • LIGHT AND REDOX ENERGY SOURCES
  • RATE OF PLANET ROTATION COMPATIBLE WITH LIFE
  • LEVEL OF UV AND IONIZING RADIATION COMPATIBLE WITH LIFE
  • GEOTHERMAL ACTIVITY
  • PRESENCE OF STABLE MOON
  • PRESENCE OF JOVIAN PLANET IN OUTER PART OF A STAR’S SYSTEM
Planets orbiting O-type, B-type, and neutron stars are immediately deemed “not suitable” for colonization by the Viridians.

TERRAFORMING ASSESSMENT:
If the data from probes and rovers yields mediocre results, a human exploratory mission is sent to investigate findings and assess the potential habitability and cost of terraforming of a planet.
The terraforming assessment deals with issues such as:
  • atmospheric pressure, atmospheric composition, atmospheric toxicity
  • water availability
  • temperature variability & stabilization

PLANETARY OUTPOSTS AND ASSESSMENT OF SUITABILITY:
Once preliminary findings suggest further consideration of a planet for colonization, an outpost is to be established on the planet of interest, to conduct research to assess the suitability of the planet for human life for a period of at least 10 years.
Some planets may be discarded and reconsidered at a later date, e.g., for too high/low geothermal activity, too strong/weak magnetic fields, levels of radiation, rate of planet rotation, tidal locking incompatible with life, among other things.
The outposts also conduct research into the life forms present on the planet of interest, if life is present.
If life is present on the planet, it is assessed pertaining to its chemical composition, stereochemistry, pathogenicity, nutritive content and digestibility, toxicity, hostility, as well as the role of species in their ecosystems.
If life present on a planet is incompatible with human life, it is to be eradicated if possible. If it is not possible to eradicate the life forms adequately, colonization is not to be pursued on the planet. The planet may be reconsidered at a later time with increasing capabilities to eradicate hostile life forms.
If the life forms present are compatible with human life, they shall coexist. Humans shall designate areas as national parks where no human activity shall be permitted to ensure the planet’s biodiversity is not significantly harmed by human interference.

ERADICATION OF INCOMPATIBLE LIFE FORMS:
To eradicate incompatible life forms, the Viridians typically employ biological and or chemical weapons specifically designed to neutralize the incompatible life forms and render the planet suitable for colonization.

"BIOLOGICAL TERRAFORMING PROTOCOL":
To increase the compatibility of a planet with Viridian life, especially, if life on the planet had to be eradicated prior to the colonization, the Viridian Republic has implemented the “Biological Terraforming Protocol”, which is a standardized protocol that entails the different steps of biological terraforming, which can be summarized in the three following steps:
  1. INTRODUCTION OF MICROBES
  2. INTRODUCTION OF PLANTS
  3. INTRODUCTION OF ANIMALS
