[DRAFT] [2237.AB] Assembly approval of the Election Commissioner |
I personally would favour Assembly confirmation of the EC.

My understanding is that before Kris became the stable and consistent Election Commissioner, the EC was often appointed last minute before an election and by a game of "nose goes" among the CRS. If the EC then required Assembly confirmation, we just often wouldn't have an EC. I understand the point you are coming from, however, though how unbiased the CRS may be, the Assembly should still have a say in important figures of our region's government. And a say can be the act of a recall and, or, a motion of no-confidence, but can also be the approval of a high-ranking governmental official. This comes back to the idea of committees, and hearings, and we could easily have a hearing, where members of the potential committee on Elections and Ethics could question the EC nominee, and then bring the vote to the Assembly. maluhia

There's no need to add this step of a "say" for the Assembly. I understand, ideologically, more votes makes people happy, but in this case we're not actually fixing a problem. This is just bureaucratic democracy for the sake of it.
Is there a problem with our Election Commissioner? Or any past Election Commissioners? That would have been avoided if they were approved by the Assembly? Minister of Foreign Affairs

The Election Commissioner is not a high-ranking government official, it is an administrative position trusted with sensitive information relating to the government. The Council on Regional Security, incidentally, is also a position trusted with sensitive information relating to the government, and their members are highly trusted. Adding an Assembly vote for the sake of it is unnecessary admin.

This doesn't make people happy. It adds nonsense. People are going to be rather unhappy when our elections start late because the EC forgot they were EC and then resigned a day before the election and the CRS scrambles to find a new EC and then the Assembly has to confirm the EC. This sounds like less of a problem of the idea itself and more a problem of the CRS appointing an incompetent EC.

Prior to Kris' tenure, ECs would often sign up for just one or two elections and then move on from the post. (In large part because the job is, well, awful. Kris just likes spreadsheets.) The fact we currently have an EC serving for over a year is an anomaly.(08-26-2022, 06:08 PM)HumanSanity Wrote: People are going to be rather unhappy when our elections start late because the EC forgot they were EC and then resigned a day before the election and the CRS scrambles to find a new EC and then the Assembly has to confirm the EC.
