Demilitarization
#171

Fantastic, but why cut the opportunity to aide allied military operations? It takes no more resources to deploy non-updaters to assist a delegate transfer than it does to assist an allied military occupation or liberation.

How about:

Quote:Article 3: South Pacific Regional Guard

1. The South Pacific Regional Guard, henceforth referred to as the SPRG, is established as the sole armed force within the Coalition of the South Pacific.
2. The Vice Delegate shall be the Commander of the SPRG and shall make sure that it is properly staffed and trained, and shall seek to involve its members in the affairs of the region.
3. The SPRG shall bolster the endorsement count of the Delegate and may assist regions in their delegate transitions, upon their request and subject to the approval of the Vice Delegate or of the Cabinet.
4. The SPRG may aide treatied allies in their military operations subject to the approval of the Vice Delegate or of the Cabinet.
5. The Vice Delegate will be responsible for creating further regulations for the SPRG and presenting them to the Assembly for passage in accordance with normal Assembly policy.
6. The SPRG will be responsible for carrying out all operations relating to declarations of war passed by the Assembly.

The vice-delegate, with a fixed WA is the wrong person to command a military.

If we went down the Kringalia reservist route, all we'd really need is someone to dish out orders for non-updater units. You wouldn't need to be WA mobile to do that.

But yes, it'd certainly be the wrong person to command a conventional military. And I'm not totally convinced TSP purposefully avoiding having a conventional military is a good idea.

I welcome suggestions as to who should lead the SPRG, though the Chair of the CSS seemed like a fine choice, given the restricted operational nature it would have.

Given the security role of the SPRG, in both internal security and aiding foreign delegacy transfers to garner future support from them for internal security, the Chair of the CSS is a good option.

But once again, I implore, do not give up the right to aide allied military operations outside of delegacy transfers. It takes no more effort technically to aide an allied occupation than it does a delegacy transfer. Its a simple case of deploying non-update units.

We aren't giving up that right, NES. Nobody has advocated that. We've said all along that we could create coalitions of the willing to aid allies. What proponents don't want is a regular updating force. It's not necessary for our alliances, as evident by the the fact that it's not only been more problematic than beneficial this past year, but also by the fact that our force is 2 people at any given time anyways.

I like Kris's legislation, I think that giving the power to the Chair of CSS is a great idea.

I also agree that having a clause that states something to the effect of:

7. The SPRG, under the behest of the Chair of the CSS, may enlist in military operations with allied nations as per treaties.

Also, could we have a bit more fun name? SPSF was sunscreen and SPRG well it sounds like some pirate thing "scurvy spurgs" or something.

Why not put in Drama Llamas in the name?

Unibot is talking primarily about the controversy of offensive military actions and how that isn't in our interests, so we may as well dissolve the military. Kringle is talking mainly about the resources that maintaining the military in its current form takes up, and that we need to have a much simpler system that takes less specialist skills and investment of time to run.

I've argued both. Together I think it makes a compelling case for demilitarisation.

OK, let's say we follow this reasoning. Maybe TSP should also stop voting in the WA. The WA was never an important aspect of TSP, and successive administrations have failed in doing anything. Let's give up the WA entirely.

Actually it used to be a lively part of our debate and it was dropped almost completely because the delegate (whoever it was - maybe Hileville) wanted more control over how they voted. I'm not sure your example is particularly illuminating.

If anything we could use a Ministry of WA Affairs. It's something TSP has lacked that most regions have.

Yes. I don't see what we have to lose. It's not as if anyone else here is wasting their time on it.
