[Eultiver][IC]Demo Issue, Everyone Welcome to Participate
#1

In order to promote Eultiver, I'll hold a demo issue. Everyone is welcome to participate and we hope you join us as a real MP in http://tspforums.xyz/thread-3344.html . After that, you'll confirm in the forums for this RP at http://s15.zetaboards.com/Republic_of_Eultiver/index/

Minorities Demand Representation In TV Soaps

The Issue

Eultiver's TV soaps--famous around the region--have come under fire for their lack of ethnic diversity.

Options

"Every night my family and I sit down to watch 'The Brash and the Backstabbing'," says Kayla Dollar. "But where are the Lilliputians like myself? Where are the Bigtopians? The Marche Noirians? People from those cultures can be just as brash and backstabbing, but we never see them on the screen. The government must act to remove this silent apartheid from our TV screens."

(Option 1)

"Those Lilliputians don't know how good they have it," says Mark Silk, spokesperson for the Tasmanians Against Ethnic Stereotyping. "Tasmanians are on television all the time, but always in crude, stereotypical roles. The answer is not to enforce ethnic quotas, but to award government prizes for the positive portrayal of minorities. That'll work better, and be cheaper, too."

(Option 2)

"The government should do what now?" says TV studio executive Howard Singh. "You've got to be kidding. We make soaps here, not documentaries. I should be able to put whichever characters I want into my shows. Quotas! Government prizes! God save me! Hasn't the government got anything better to do? Why don't they just back off and let society work out these things on its own?"

(Option 3)

(Option 4)

This is up to debate. Please, esteemed MPs, debate the issue.

Indostad (MP Caitlyn Ayyub)

"While it may be true that the creative industry should be more open with providing more stories of people from other cultural backgrounds, such ideas must not be enforced under the law of our great nation. The TV studio executives are responsible with the stories and the sort of actors it hires, and the government must not have a role in which people to hire. However, the television board must not also cultivate profit from alarmingly racist and discriminative television shows, and I do believe that the stance of our great government must be set up to come against with such intolerance.

In short, we should be doing something else than decide who'll be on tv on sunday nights, however if a bigwig were to portray racism, then be prepared for the government's wrath."

"I totally agree with the MP of Indostad here. Our nation must not be a racist, backwards pariah in this new and advanced century"

Midgarth (Aeryn Gainsborough)

Whilst I agree with the MP from Indostad that the government should not be legislating what can and cannot be shown on our televisions, there is a strong argument to be made for the use of positive reinforcement. Rather than legislating against certain portrayals, there is room to offer rewards for inclusive television. A television service which is rewarded for the quality and ethics of its programming would be an asset to the nation and there would be no need for the censorious hand of government, restricting artistic freedom.

Jonathan Relean (Dominth Province)

"The idea proposed by the MP from Midgarth sounds appealing in theory. In practice, however, cries of foul play will ring perpetually about how we decide the ethics of our nation rather than our peoples, and those who do not receive awards will consider it a form of censorship.

Let us instead consider the bigger picture. Restricting or rewarding television is just a bandaid on a bigger problem that we should address. Let us not bother with television but rather look to raise the income floor in our great nation, with a base income for all adults, investments in construction to create jobs, and lowering the cost of higher education. Mid- to long-term, this will take care of the television problem on its own."

Indostad (Caitlyn Ayyub)

Indostad sees a larger problem in providing regular government funded incentives for positive potrayal of different ethnicities in the creative industry. For one, where could we find the funds for it? Such rewards should not be derived from our national treasury.

Such rewards should instead be delegated to the ministry of culture, and they can only be given if the art promotes tolerance between culture. If not educate its viewers a grand idea of the way of life of a certain cultural ethnicity that resides in our nation.

We must support the arts that devote itself into tolerance and cultural awareness only, and I mark only, in an unbiased light.

Zen-Fubukino Province (Akira Kenshin)

Zen-Fubukino sees no need for the government to instill ethnic quotas or provide awards to the "Positive" portrayal of minorities within the media, and believes that the issue ought to be dismissed (option 4). In fact this is hardly a band aid for the larger issues and the minorities are barking up the wrong tree. They shouldn't demand more representation in fictional soap operas that usually only last for a single season. They should demand greater political representation, job opportunities, access to healthcare, post secondary education, equal pay and housing opportunities.
