Harrison signs bill to legalise coca production, says there will be oversight

The bill was introduced and sponsored by members of the Populists of the Left, the agrarian counterpart of the Labor Party and junior member party of the Alliance of Social Democrats, and was hailed as a major victory for farmers. While Winston Island never grew coca, the Qvaitican economy maintained a coca industry until production was banned in 1980 by President Brandon Taylor. Taeler Shaw, the Vice Chancellor and Leader of the Populists of the Left, said that the bill would revive the once prosperous coca industry and bring in more revenue for Valkyria, "We are on the verge of an economic renaissance." While proponents of the bill were celebrating, critics warn that the bill will cause a surge in cocaine use and drug trafficking in Valkyria.
The political leaders of the right—Nicole Chancellor, Victor Cutter, and Jonathan Victor—issued a rare joint statement, warning that the signing of Thursday's bill will cause unintended consequences such as surges in drug abuse, cocaine production, and drug trafficking. The Leader of The New Right, Nicole Chancellor, said in the statement, "By signing this bill, Ms. Harrison has opened Pandora's box on her Valkyrian experiment." Jonathan Victor, the Leader of the Conservative Party, warned that the bill "essentially legalises black market activity that deserves to be illegal". Even Victor Cutter, the moderate Leader of the Centrist Democratic Party, signed his name on the statement and voiced concern that the bill would introduce "new problems" for Valkyria.
Despite the criticism, Harrison defended signing the bill by saying, "This bill not only legalises coca production, but it mandates strong oversight by civil authorities. This is no different than marijuana production, a debate that was ended when the people voted in this year's Referendum Day to keep marijuana legal." Harrison said the Valkyrian National Police will continue to enforce existing narcotics law and "thoroughly" investigate suspected violations of such law.
