[PASSED] Bribery
#11

Inspired by Glen plus some online definitions, how about this:

Quote:(8) Bribery shall be defined as the receiving or offering of undue patronage by or to any individual in order to influence behavior that the recipient would otherwise not alter.

Monetary value goes against site rules so I'm not sure if these need to be explicit in the code.

So would this mean that people cannot have tit for tat agreements on votes? Would that also mean that people cannot be promised positions in exchange for support?

They can't promise positions in exchange for whatever, or request a position in exchange for something.

Tit-for-tat agreements, such as political parties agreeing on endorsing each other's candidates for distinct offices, would still be allowed.

Then I think the second part of your reply should be clarified in the legislation.

One might only be voting for a candidate because of  a tit-for-tat agreement. Therefore, that would constitute influencing the behavior of a recipient to alter their vote (in exchange for a vote).

I don't see how with the current wording it makes it illegal to request a position in return for a vote. That would surely be only illegal if they go through with the deal, since only offering and receiving are illegal.

To vote for a candidate that explicitly offered you a position under them should they win *for the purpose of accepting that offer* would be bribery, because it is in fact bribery. Replace 'a position under them' with money, stamps, or League of Legends Riot Points and this becomes clear. Voting for someone you agree with and wish to support through their campaign by becoming a official for their office is a completely different thing even if you express this wish or they express a wish for you to serve under them to you. This only becomes bribery when the candidate explicitly attempts to buy your vote with that position when you would not have otherwise voted for them, hence the wording; 'in order to influence behavior that the recipient would not otherwise alter.'
