[DISCUSSION] Detailing the Delegate's ceremonial duties
#21

I see the point. Perhaps we approach this concept from a meritocracy point of view wherein the government maintains a ledger of sorts with information on who contributed to civil service and where at certain levels, an award is automatically given out by the Delegate in a monthly ceremony.

For example, DumplingMonster works in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Regional Affairs as an ambassador and event planner, respectively. With every update she posts about her designated region she is rewarded with 250 points to be recorded in the ledger. At 2000 points, she will have attained the designation of 'ABC' and given a shiny medal.

The problem with that is they're less awards and more like a list of video game achievements. They don't signify any meaningful contributions. You can't quantify things like who did great legislative accomplishments or who went above and beyond in office or who dedicated themselves to protecting the Coalition. Something like you propose is just measuring quantity over quality on quantifiable tasks.

Mmm. Well then, perhaps as a compromise, allow for the Delegate to recommend one individual on the advice of the Cabinet for a commendation every Delegate Day? That way, we are not giving out awards left, right, and centre, while still acknowledging achievement.

I feel restricting it to Delegate Day would be too excessive. Why not give out awards on Independence Day, or Coalition Day, or even Max Barry Day? And the medals could be themed towards the day, though that would probably be bad.

Complete Conflict of Interest

I'm hesitant to support this proposal because I feel that the TSP community is inherently much smaller than many of the RL communities that it has been compared to. Giving out many awards makes sense when you have a lot of people, but when you have much fewer, I think it's only logical that the awards should be given out much more sparingly. I wouldn't be against the once-a-year compromise, although I would still not expect them to be particularly meaningful.

That said, I do think there's value to awards resembling video-game achievements — SWAN, I would say, is built upon such a model and I think it's an excellent program. Perhaps we could have the Delegate's office issue those and similar achievement-like awards for other programs? (I have a vague notion of something along those lines in some ministries, but I'm not too sure.)

Truly meaningful contributions to the region, on the other hand, I would consider rewarded with the respect those contributions earn. There are definitely people in this region who respect and admire, and I think I'm definitely not alone.
