Grovne, Kingdom of Sedunn

An assassin had been sent by a Valoran noble. His mission? Kill the rogue Ryccian diplomat.

Victoria was walking to a hotel she was temporarily staying in. The Ryccian delegation had kicked her out of her state-funded residence because of "thorough bug extermination" activities. It would, officially, take a few days, the right amount of time her enemies in the Foreign Ministry could fabricate a cause to fire her.

Victoria had been catious and had requested security from the Sedunnic police. This was granted, and thus two officers were tasked with protecting her. She barely knew Sedunnic, so they communicated in Austral instead.

The assassin had her in their sights. Police protection already, huh? Fascinating.

Time to shoot.

Click

"Huh?", the assassin thought in their confusion.

Click, click

"This gun is jammed. Of all the days to break, you choose to do so here! Useless!", they cursed in their head.

The assassin hit the gun in a fury. To their surprise, the impact forged what they had been wanting for so long.

BANG!

The gun fired. But not at Castañielo. Due to the frustration of the assassin, their aim had deviated slightly off-course and thus the bullet hit an officer that was protecting her.

Castañielo tried to run inside the hotel in a panic. The assassin fled, knowing they would be caught if they did not get out of there immediately. But they knew what had just happened, and they dreaded the consequences for it.

Failure.

Mirochi, Kingdom of Valora
Complex A-8, Mirochi Harbour

The "Coeur Asakusa" A freighter from Capital City Lian en route for Mirochi. Carrying machines, textile and frozen food in exchange for imports from Valora. The ship is to be unloaded once more the next day, but there are some cargo that needed to be unloaded tonight.

The first mate, my father. He is scheduled to stay for the month before departing again on the "Coeur Aminah", where he is to become the captain. This job was offered to me, a start in a long line of logisticians.

I had control of the crane that night, it was like a game of Jenga, piling up and unloading those containers to a neat pile. Some are placed next to the depot, where when ready, will be loaded unto trucks. As I placed a Tiantang container, the foreman radioed to me.

"It's time for you to rest kid, the captain wants to see you."

I've placed the controls on standby, and had my replacement briefed. Upon going down I made by way to the ship's stern. My father was waiting.

"I've placed the kettle on, do make some tea and biscuits."

Peonic tea was expensive in Valora, so my father had them stocked in the mess hall. I brewed two cups before bringing my father his tea. I sipped mine.

"How is your mother?" he asked.

"She's fine, she was asleep when I left for work today."

"I'll be back tomorrow evening after I finish unloading the cargo. I'm going to meet with customs the day after, so I could use a shower."

"There is still some buns in the fridge and mooncake, mom is saving them for you."

"I'll definitely make sure to make my stay longer then, if your mother isn't still angry with me."
said my father. I looked outside, still seeing the containers being unloaded.

"What is it that needed unloading so late?" I asked.

"Some cargo are en route for Oslen in the morning. While some are distributed to little Changi now. Foodstuff, mostly."

"I still don't understand why."

"You're still green my child. Maybe later you'll understand that some goods need more urgent care than others." Said my father, never leaving an opportunity to lecture, "the Coeur Aminah has a loading crane you know."

"Who is going to accompany mom?"

"Did you not ask me to bring you something from your cousin?" My father took out a box from his coat and gave it to me. "She told me that you want some Mei Li jade cut?"

I took the box and opened it. A platinum ring with Mei Li Jade encircling around it.

"Fan is a nice girl, she makes good steam buns with your teacher." Said my father, "my offer, give it a consideration."

As I got out from the ship I saw two containers filled with fish be loaded unto lorries. Men in plain clothing had taken the cargo, it was addressed to Antonie. It was odd, normally the container was to be loaded right away to a flatbed, but why would some crates be carried unto the box lorry instead?

The crates itself are a bit questionable. I don't think I've seen crates labeled Kurokiba Weaponry in seafood containers before. It seems I've laid eyes on them too long as the workers looked at me with suspicion. Is dad related to this in any way?

I got unto my crane and continued my work. It feels like the entire harbour seemed to be planning something, and I don't want a part of it.

Holyöka, Kingdom of Valora
Western Regions

The mood in the small town of Holyöka was tense. Two weeks ago, a young woman was executed on the spot for handing out anti-monarchist propaganda. The town was immediately placed under martial law. 120 soldiers and KEP officers now constantly patrolled the streets and carried out surprise searches to snuff out any dissent. The military and paramilitary police carried out their actions with absolute impunity.

Only 4,500 people lived here. Most residents were furious at the regime, but also frightened.

Then, it began.

A small crowd began to protest a KEP search of a farmer's market, ransacking everything and scaring the populace. One officer hit an elderly man with a baton to intimidate the angry multitude. Little did he know that it was a mistake.

The crowd began to throw everything they had against the officers. The seven panicked KEP officers began to shoot the protesters, but this did not dissuade them. Instead, they lynched the officers and stole their weapons.

When the Baron of the town heard the shots, he was emboldened. He was a closeted liberal, and thus was as angry as the people were. Holding the key to an armory, he opened it and started to quickly rally passersby. They eagerly agreed to join his proposed revolt, taking guns from the armory.

The protesters, now armed, began to shoot at the KEP and soldiers who were called as reinforcements. The local commander was inexperienced, and thus led his troops horribly. The population overwhelmed the garrison after hours of gunfire.

42 troops and 343 civilians were either dead or injured. The rest of the garrison surrendered to the mob when they were cornered.

Tearing down the royal Valoran flag, a red cloth was raised in the town hall. Many had died or had been wounded, but the crowd was still euphoric. They had spontaneously risen up against royalist rule, and they had won. The people were jubilant with their victory.

And then...an inferno.

The Valoran government knew what was happening. Mere minutes after declaring victory, royalist planes bombed the town with incendiary explosives. The entire town and the surrounding farms burned down in a sea of unforgiving flames. As royal and as brutal as its creators, the blaze engulfed Holyöka.

Many people died or lost their homes. The town was devastated. Immediately after that, 500 soldiers arrived to take any remaining civilians under custody. Out of the entire population of 4,500, only 367 managed to escape. 2,814 people were arrested.

The military sent them all in trucks with little personal space. All of those trucks then stopped at an empty field that had recently burned down. The soldiers began to grab random civilians to the centre of the circle the trucks had made. Only children and the old were spared from this removal. They took 100 of the prisoners and shot them right then and there.

The 2,714 prisoners were transported to a newly-built concentration camp. There, the able were to be worked to death. The children and the elderly were merely interned, and the nobles that had not betrayed the regime were let go and sent to a nearby facility to recover.

Sadistic brutality. Sparks continue to flicker.

Heightbury, Kingdom of Valora
Lähjoka County, Valetta Province

Unlike the west, which was dominated by ethnic Valorans, the easternmost regions of Valora itself were not Valoran in terms of ethnic composition, but Ryccian.

Compared to the few Valorans that still lived in the east, the Ryccians were a more recent group. Most of them had arrived in the 15th-19th centuries thanks to state-sponsored migration, and although many Ryccian families had been there for generations, the Valorans, especially those in the west, saw them as outsiders.

Both communities had dismal relations with each other. The Valorans despised the Ryccians due to them "overrunning" their homes and having a higher social status; the Ryccians were initially ambivalent to the revolts of the 19th century, but when nationalist and leftist Valoran rebels explicitly targeted and killed ethnic Ryccians either for their race or wealth, their opinion of them plummeted. The Ryccians, especially those who were minorities in the west, feared another war where the Valorans would attempt to murder them again, and thus were the staunchest supporters of the monarchy that was a puppet of Ryccia proper.

"Hey there, Carl! How are you?"

"Fine, fine, uncle. Would you like some tea?"

"Of course! Say, have you heard of the rumours?"

"The one where the royalists are murdering Valoran savages?"

"Yeah, those. Apparently, they firebombed a small town"

"Serves them right. Those Valoran bastards. They killed my grandfather"

"Let's hope that the monarchy kicks their arses, eh? The mad dogs killed my cousin in that war. I don't want to lose anyone else to those devils"

"Oh, poppycock...well, I have to head out. Sorry, I just remembered I had an errand to run. I'll see you in half an hour, uncle"

"God bless you! If you see your sister, tell her to be safe in her deployment in the west!"

"I will. Enjoy the tea, and lock the door on your way out. God save the King!"

Taichang, Kingdom of Valora
Western Regions

Unlike the other towns in its vicinity, Taichang was a particular village. It was a Peonic enclave in the middle of nowhere, settled by Peonic Muslims who had been granted land by a sympathetic Valoran king of their era to settle. As a result, not only were they isolated from the wider population, but also from the chaos around them.

No one cared about them politically. When the 19th century revolts happened, the rebels left this town untouched. The royalists never garrisoned it either. These Peonic settlers were too peaceful and irrelevant to the wider conflict to matter. They were just 850 people farming peacefully in the middle of nowhere.

Only a few Valorans lived in the town. The local Baronet's family was present, as well as some low-level royalist bureaucrats. The local police were recruited from the local population. If there was anywhere to live in peace, it would be this village nestled in the mountains, relatively isolated from the outside world.

This is where they fled to.

Six people who had escaped the carnage at Holyöka, which was close by, thought of fleeing to Taichang. They had thought that it was a perfect to find solitude. The KEP seldom patrolled the area, and when they did stop by, they were actually nice to the villagers, even contributing to the economy by spending their money in the few restaurants there.

However, the royalist government was being cautious.

10 armed KEP officers descended on the town. When those six escapees saw them, they fled into a nearby forest, hoping the KEP would never find them. The officers began to question the villagers if they had seen any suspicious individuals in the area. They began to talk to one villager who had seen the terrified faces of the outsiders.

Taichang, Kingdom of Valora
Western Regions

"What a fine morning", said the farmer.

After his morning prayer, the Peonic peasant set off to the town to purchase a farm tool. His had broken in the middle of his labour, and thus he had to go to the local hardware store. In a desolate path from his farm that led to the town centre, he saw something interesting.

Six Valorans were running, panicking. How strange. The only Valorans in the town were the local royal officials that graciously helped the farmers sell their produce to the capital. Are they new tax collectors of some sort?

"Älä kerro heille, että olimme täällä!"

"Huh? What on Earth are they saying?"

The inhabitants of Taichang did not know a lick of Valoran on average. The Valoran regime's education system here operated in Chinese, not Valoran, as a way to keep this little village isolated from their regional neighbours. As a result, they knew next to nothing about their compatriots by technicality. This was by design, as the Valoran regime wished to distance these two populations as much as possible. Taichang's population had reliable contact with the main Peonic diaspora population in Mirochi, and having them in constant interaction with the wider area would severely impact their ability to hide their abuses of power. Further, they treated the village with a light touch, as both the local ruling Baronet and the central government were receptive to their concerns. The low noble Valoran class here, the Baronet and his family, were close friends with the rest of the population and knew how to read and write Chinese, something which made their non-inheriting members valuable assets as translators for the regime in both Taichang and the capital. In fact, the current heir to the Baronet was the first noblewoman in Taichang to be of half-Peonic descent, as the incumbent Baronet had married a villager and had children.

The farmer continued on in his march, thinking little of the entire affair. Maybe they were some new bureaucrats who were in trouble for being late to something.

He arrived at the town and bought his replacement tool. The day was supposed to be just another peaceful day.

Supposed to be.

10 KEP officers marched on the town. As they were not the usual bunch of officers that inspected the village, they had to get the local Baronet to help them as an interpreter. They were told to treat the population nicely (one officer even tried to give candy to a child as a gesture of goodwill), but the mere sight of their rifles confused and scared the villagers, who had only seen lightly-armed KEP officers before.

The farmer was approached by the KEP. The Baronet spoke in Chinese.

"Hello there! The Valoran police is conducting an urgent search for serious criminals in the area. They were Valoran in ethnicity. Have you seen any ethnic Valorans acting suspiciously?"

"Criminals, you say?"

"Yes, they committed henious crimes. Murder, I believe. Have you seen any?"

"How horrible!...As a matter of fact, I have. Some Valorans went into a forest near my farm. I can lead you to it if you want"

"Excellent! Thank you"

The farmer led them to the forest. He told the officers that there were at least seven caves around the mountain that was near the forest. The KEP searched the area thoroughly, and found the six suspects. They arrested them and took them out of the village, where they were transported to the labour camp.

How horrible.

Antonie, Kingdom of Valora

Home of the Lieutenant General that had sparked the unrest, Antonie's 35,000 people were just as terrified as the rest of their countrymen. 3,000 soldiers and KEP officers occupied the town, instituting the same reign of terror as in the rest of the west.

Little did they know that their commanding officer was a traitor from the very beginning.

Marcus had contacts with disloyal sections of the garrison. He also knew the local communists secretly, and had told them of the plan. It had to be done.

It began when one of the communist agitators, Petrus Halonen, began to speak in the public square. The people were enthusiastic, cheering the speech on. Predictably, the garrison dispatched troops to shoot them on the spot. However, they were tricked.

Revolting soldiers, wearing red sashes, began to fire at their now-former comrades-in-arms who were sent there from the buildings surrounding the square. It was an ambush, and their commander immediately surrendered, confused at what was happening. He had done so on the hope that these mutineers were an anomaly that were about to be crushed by the rest of the garrison.

He was wrong.

The treacherous Lieutenant General declared himself for the rebels, and began arming the local communists and any civilian who would join them. The sections of the garrison that were not part of the plan either surrendered or joined the uprising. 2,100 soldiers and KEP officers, in addition to 5,000 new civilian compatriots, took over the town.

In the wider county, revolts also sprung up in other towns and villages. This was a carefully planned and calculated insurrection, and the royalist regime was left dumbfounded.

"Sir, we are receiving reports of revolt in Maalko County!"

"Another one of those spontaneous uprisings? Just call the air force and send troop-"

"Sir, this is different! The rebels are our own garrison in the county!"

"WHAT?! Did they execute the Lieutenant General or something?!"

"...Regrettably, it is the Count Maalko who is the figurehead of the local insurgency"

"......................................."

".............................................."

"........................................................How is this...possib...?"

"Sir, we must act"

"Get me the King. He must order an extraordinary meeting. Contact the Ryccians as well"

Archin, Kingdom of Valora
Frontlines

The rebels were fighting the royalists in a village called Archin. The people were hiding in their homes. The rebels had attacked the area due to the royalist forces entrenching themselves in the village, holding it as a strategic fortification that would block the entrance to Outul County to the insurgents.

"Royalist machine gun squad on that tower! Shoot them down!"

PEW PEW PEW, BANG

"SHIT! Continue firing! Soldiers, do not retr-I SAID NO RETREAT! FIGHT ON!"

The civilians who had joined the rebel force were the bulk of this insurgency. Poorly trained, they were motivated to fight, but their lack of discipline made them prone to flee the frontlines due to the heavy artillery fire.

The battle seemed lost. Most of the troops sent to Archin were these militia, and the rebel officers and professional soldiers struggled to maintain order.

Then, something absolutely unexpected occurred.

The royalist garrison...stopped firing. All across the village, their guns went cold. Then, the army headquarters in the village raised an orange flag: the colour of Valoran liberalism, yes, but also the colour of friendship. The local commander, a closeted liberal, surrendered on purpose after guilt overwhelmed her.

Some royalist soldiers across the line went out and tried to greet the rebels. But soldiers and KEP officers of Ryccian origin were furious with this surrender and began shooting their former, now traitorous comrades.

It was a bloodbath. Having lowered their guard, both the rebels and the defecting royalists were massacred.

"DIE, YOU TRAITOROUS DOGS!", said a female Ryccian from Heightbury. She was thinking on her deceased grandfather, who was brutally murdered by the savages. She thought of him to pull the trigger, otherwise she would had never dared to do so.

These butchers must die.

Mirochi, Kingdom of Valora

The top military commanders had begun a meeting with the King and the top members of the government. This little revolt needed to be silenced, posthaste.

"Your Majesty, ladies and gentlemen, here is the situation. The rebel forces led by the traitorous Lieutenant General Marcus Humilau have risen in his home county. He is taking ground despite our best efforts. Moreover, separate uprisings inspired by that treacherous dog have taken place in several counties. Our army is moving in as fast as it can, but our continued presence across the rest of the west limits our manpower"

"Why do we not just transfer more troops and launch a final strike?", said the Royal Minister of Justice.

"We require a strong and martial presence in the west to police it, Your Grace. The populace is close to revolting. Some of our generals fear that channeling a torrent of troops and supplies would undermine our efforts to pacify the entirety of the west, and thus we shall need to do without a flood. We shall engage these filthy snakes in the frontlines, and in their homes"

Sophia, the Crown Princess, was there. Unbeknownst to the rest of those meeting here, she was gathering information for the rebels. She needed them to advance her plan.

"We have come up with a strategy to defeat the insurgents, and it is resumed thusly. We shall demolish a notable portion of their troops and divide the main pocket of rebels in twain. Our attack shall commence in the night, and we shall punch a straight line from their west and east. First, we shall attack with 30,000 troops in their west, as our intelligence suggests it is the least defended territory. This massive assault shall force them to concentrate their armies into that spot to resist the assault. As this happens, paratroopers shall land at key towns to secure them, and the attack on their east shall commence. We shall take the territory in a lighting strike, and we shall outflank them. Surrounding the bulk of their militia, we shall crush them with one swift stroke"

"Let us see what truly happens", Sophia thought.
