[PASSED] Times Act
#11

For the military gameplayers among us, East Coast time is actually most convenient since that puts the game update times at 0:00 and 12:00. Belschaft's draft includes "New York" time, which should work fine.

I don't think the Bills should include as part of the text links to actual websites, because we don't know if they're going down, if there are better alternatives (including on the forum itself), or whatnot. It would be acceptable to add those in an Appendix, I think.

That website is the best option I'm aware of, and those links actually take you to the exact pages on it where you can set everything up.

Wow — I have a bunch of random things to add here.

So, first, as a stupid American, is GMT and UTC not the same thing?

Second, does NS have an North American bias or just TSP? Because we certainly started using ET way back when because many of us were American, but I'm wondering if that just reinforced a natural bias toward people in the Western Hemisphere?

Third, I'll add that recently, I made deadlines coordinate to whatever time zone I was in because it's just easier for me. I'd encourage anyone who's not in NYC Sydney or London timezones (and ooaf that Anglo-bias) to do the same.

Fourth, I do think our ability to play with timezones has helped us meet the Charter mandates since we've had like ... a 48 hour window rather than just 24.

Anyhow, whatevs. I'd support this bill with Bel's amendments if that's how we want to go.

There's important differences, but in casual use GMT and UTC are similar. GMT is a time zone based on the sun over Greenwich, UK. UTC is a global time standard which is kept within one second of GMT. UTC is the proper one to use for technical things.

The EST/EDT bias is really an internet problem, because the east coast USA makes up a large portion of the online English speaking population. And some of the largest other segments are also still part of America.

As for the others, I agree that we should keep it at whatever works for those running it. Even a short timer in TSP is still 72 hours, so it's not like you need to be on at a specific time or you miss it. For anything important, you have a couple days to do it at any time. The more likely issues are going to be the person running it being unable to work with another timezone's hours.

This proposal is an affront to freedom; yet another attempt by big government to interfere in the lives of TSP nations.

We don't need to be told which timezone we should use. Government needs to get out of our way and let us use whichever timezone we live in or want to.

To expand on the core of my concerns about time zones, it’s less about what time zones we offer, and way more about confusion that’s caused when deadlines are set at unreasonable times.

This is an issue that impacts Western Hemisphere players way more than European, African, Asian, or Oceanic players. That’s because a deadline set in the middle of night UTC can actually be in the previous day once converted to a Western time zone. But for everyone else, it’ll be at a future time.

While printing our most commonly used time zones is an improvement, I think it’s still bad practice to have deadlines that fall on literally different days.

I'm quite used to UTC, even though there's currently a five-hour difference between PDT and UTC. Here's an easy tool to convert timezones: google "UTC to [your timezone]".

I know this has been said but I will say it again, COUNTDOWN CLOCK. This way no one can be confused or miss anything or not understand something. And for those who don't wanna google, it is RIGHT IN THEIR FACE.

I actually think that is a reasonable bill.  I could support that (and might unofficially start doing that in everything I do regardless of whether it's passed or not), Provide the time in UTC, and equivvalent times in London, NY, and Sydney... Along with a countdown clock.)
